I went with the method that allows you to install 4.0.4 and not be rooted or unlocked. Didn't improve my signal at all, it actually made it worse. I saw my signal drop 6 times in an hour (according to No Signal Alert) . Pretty frustrating.

What about the people that don't want or care about rooting there phone don't they have a right to have a phone that works or at least gets updates quickly. I mean you shouldn't have to root your phone to make it work the way it should out of the box.

I've said this a hundreds times already. Verizon is notorious for taking their time with official updates. I've been through this on several smart phones including Non-Android devices such as Blackberry. Do the research, guys! What really gets me is some of you guys who are complaining have gone through this with the Fascinate, Charge, and other Verizon specific Android phones. Did you really believe it would magically be different just because this was a Nexus? If that's true, you guys really don't understand what a Nexus is. The OS updates all come from Google. The benefit of the Nexus is that you can unlock the bootloader, apply the OS updates from Google when they are dropped, and bypass Verizon altogether! Hello! This is (should be) the main reason in getting the phone. That, and flashing the heck out of it with custom Roms, newer radios, and kernels. I seriously don't understand some of you.

As far as the time factor goes, some of you are seriously over exaggerating how long you think it would take to set up your phone after applying a new Rom. If you have time to log into Android Central, read a few threads, and post a few comments, you have time to set up your phone. It's not that time consuming once you factor in utilities like titanium backup, Google back up, and launcher back ups.

Also, not sure if I saw it mentioned, but one of the biggest advantages to unlocking/rooting is having the ability to have a custom recovery. With ClockworkMod or TWRP, you guys can backup your entire phone (data, system, apps, etc). Pretty handy and important if you ask me.

Some of you just don't know what you're missing. The tools and files exist to completely unlock the potential of your phone, and some of you are content to just sit on it and do nothing but complain. I'm sorry, but I just don't get it.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. Although I'm not crying and moaning about it. I bought the Galaxy Nexus with the perception that I would always get the latest update before any othe ICS device. I was wrong. This is my 4th android device and the first one I have never rooted. I don't really care about a whole bunch of crazy roms I usually only root for free wifi tether, some type of fix or to get the latest update without waiting for Verizon to push it out. Unfortunatly this is the first phone I have been having an incredibly hard time getting root on. Unlocking was easy but I can't get root on this to save my life. I thought I followed the instructions to a T but nothing happens. I have asked people on the forums for help, some have provided help with links to how to do it, but no luck. Maybe its because it's my first android phone that I ever tried to root on a Mac since I have gotten rid of all my PC's. I have a ton of friends with android friends but none of them no anything about rooting so they are no help. The Droid I rooted with a one click root, The incredible I did myself and it was pretty easy, the Thunderbolt I also did myself with a buddy instructing me how to do it but this phone is just not rooting for me. I even came on these forums and offered to pay someone to do it. So this is the only reason I am at the mercy of Verizon waiting on an OTA and their are a lot of people in my boat who don't even want to even hack with there phone. By the way my phone is fine. I don't get the random reboots people complain about, I don't bad signal, although my 3g-4g transitions are super slow and I get free wifi without root. So I guess I really want the update for hopefully better stock camera and better 3g-4g transitions.

I actually don't mind 4.0.2 because with HDMI dock it allows me to mirror everything to my HD TV. When I was on 4.0.4 I would that stupid Android guy.

What process did you use? What tool? Did you install the proper drivers? I can't be of too much help as I don't use Apple stuff. So some people in forums told you you'd get fast updates and you believed them. And forum people told you Samsung was, what, saving its "good" radios all the time for the nexus (lol).. And you believed that too. And now your mad. Seems like you learned a valuable lesson in researching products before you throw down your cash. Only yourself to blame, sir.

I can't say I would have gotten far in school or life if the only sources I used for information were "forum guys".

I don't know why you guys can't see this from both sides.

You should not have to root any device to get it to work correctly, it's really just that simple.

The Nexus is a developer phone yes, but that means it's a developer phone for Google, it does not mean you're "supposed" to root and mod it.

Some people have the Nexus from their jobs and rooting is against policy, and still others just don't want to do it, it's their choice. There is no need to bash someone because they can't or choose not to root and just want a device that cost $300 to work right out of the box.

Rooting isn't difficult. It doesn't take hours. Applying a custom ROM takes less than 10 minutes and if you use titanium backup to restore your downloaded apps with data can take a while depending on how many apps you have, but it still doesn't take hours.
I applied my first custom ROM a while ago. I expected to be tweaking everything for hours to get it back to normal. I was done 20 minutes later.

I never wanted to apply a custom ROM, but I hated that Verizon hadn't pushed an update yet and javascript on the Nexus was not working correctly. So I applied a custom ROM just to fix that one issue.
The tweaks of over/under clocking, changing the soft keys, 180 degree rotation, etc, are all just perks.

For the record... I'm not bashing anyone for choosing not to root. If I'm bashing at all, it's because of those who:
1. Choose to keep a phone they aren't satisfied with.
2. Choose not to exchange it for a phone they would be happier with.
3. Choose to wait for an OTA rather than take some time and do it themselves.
And 4. Choose to complain incessantly in the forums about all their choices, as if there weren't more productive things they could do with their time.

Even if it's your work phone and you can't unlock it, I'm sure it can't be more trouble to have it exchanged for something else if it sucks that much for you than it is to sit and wait for months reading and posting the same stuff in the forums, all for an OTA which you don't even know for sure will fix your issues. Just being logical.

Also the common cry of "It should work perfectly out of the box"... Why is that? Does all technology follow that rule? I don't think so. That's why you are supposed to research before you buy things, especially technology.. Rather than slap your money on the counter as soon as you see the shiniest phone in the store.

If you didn't KNOW that Verizon is slow as hell to approve updates, didn't KNOW that Samsung radios are subpar in the phone world, didn't KNOW exactly what a Nexus was supposed to be, then you didn't do a lick of research before investing your money, and you have only yourself to blame. Luckily for you verizon is pretty accommodating and even after all this time I bet they'll still let you exchange for a different phone. Lesson learned, next time do your homework.

I agree that if my phone wasn't working I would have returned it within the given window instead of waiting for an update, however, being a Nexus it is said to receive timely updates.
Lots of people come to the forums to get help. Many users on forums clearly state "if you have issues with this or that we're all here to help". That implies the users on the forums are knowledgeable. So when those users (especially the ones with the title of guide or moderator) stated the Nexus would get timely updates directly from Google and bypass Verizon, those with lesser knowledge took them at their word. So you can't say "come to the forums to get help", then when the information given is incorrect you say [well, you shouldn't have taken the advice of forums posters].

I didn't say it should work "perfectly" out of the box, I said it should "work" out of the box, meaning it should be able to hold a signal and make phone calls without having most if not all calls dropped and having to reboot to get a signal, especially on "America's most reliable network".

I think a lot of people missed my original intent with this thread. I was looking to point out that the situation makes me a little sad to watch, as six months in it appears that everyone has moved on. Samsung knows there?s issues with the device, but they have newer and bigger fish to fry, so they moved on a long time ago. Google knows that the update brings little new, exciting, or urgent to the mix, so there?s no real reason to make a big push on Verizon to release it. Verizon knows that there?s more headaches than benefits to releasing the update (we?ve seen that many of the people with real problems do not get them fixed in 4.0.4), so they?ve moved on. Finally, the lack of interest, except by a rabid few, shows that we?ve mostly moved on too.

What I had hoped, with this Nexus, was for some vitality. That Google was finally breaking some territory where it would come into its own with Android and that we (users +VZW+Google) were all kind of on an adventure together. Sure it?s a little sissy, but I was looking for this phone to feel a little love from its creators and it seems to mostly feel neglect. As a developer (= someone who writes apps and sites), what excites me is api level releases that bring new functionality that I can leverage for my users. Granted, I am coming into Android new with no sense of history to know if this is something that happened on a regular basis with the previous Android versions.

What I would have guessed would have happened by now is that this update would have been forced by a newer version coming on its heels. That Google would have to push for this release, as they would not be able to watch the VZW Nexus fall two api versions behind. That hasn?t happened and it makes me hope that Google hasn?t completely moved on to looking towards Jellybean only.

In the end, it?s just a phone and a tool to test software, so my interest is somewhat academic. I have all the time in the world to wait on an update, as my lucky phone is one of the ones without real problems. Nothing against rooting or roming. It just doesn?t hold much interest for me as a hobby.

It makes me a little sad too, but in reality, that's the nature of Android. It had a good run of a solid 5-6 months of being the "it" phone, but due to new things coming out, it quickly gets overlooked.

Where it is not overlooked is the dev community though (roms, kernels, etc.). The devs and the people following such entrepreneurs are downright passionate about this device, so if you ever want to see a bunch of people talk with joy about this phone, check out one of the popular rom threads (here, there, or everywhere really). That's where this phone's heart lies IMHO, for better or for worse.

Yes, I did look that over (if you recall us discussing it a few weeks back), but really almost none of it applies to me. That is true about Titanium, but does it really only take TBU five minutes to back everything up, even the first time? And five minutes to put everything, all the apps installed, back? That is much faster than it used to be.

FWIW, i just did a full wipe and clean install of the latest AOKP. from start to finish (including re-doing all my app backups, wipe, flash, titanium restore, home screen setup, and ROM setup) it took me 33 minutes. that is with 83 apps and 4 system app restores as well.

I disagree with this point. All devices work out of the box. You make them your own by rooting, installing software, changing the background, etc. Whenever I buy a PC, the first thing I do is put my own copy of Linux or Windows on it. Why? Because I want it to work the way I want it to work, remove the bloatware, etc... Same difference. I make my purchases based on the hardware, not the software.
