I'm calling it

meh,

This phone is unique in that is also is supposed to get update pushes directly from google which has turned out not to be the case. VZW is controlling it so google cant run wild with updates and take the control and focus away from their Droid brand. There is a struggle for less carrier involvement and more control from the OEM and OS developers which is why google is releasing the next nexus on multiple carriers at once and not supporting CDMA. They want to take the power away form VZ as they have a strangle hold on their devices due to their network and want to move to a more European carrier type model where you can use unlocked devices on several carriers.

I understand that CDMA/LTE issue, don't get me wrong. My only point is that this "update delay" is the same for all Verizon devices, regardless of LTE, etc. This is not a GN isolated issue; while this update alone may be delayed due to the LTE issue Jerry and yourself have discussed, Verizon generally has never been good with updates.

While Google may be the one pushing (and for all intents and purposes, they appear to be, hence the update being on their servers this week, Verizon still has the rights/licenses to the CDMA/LTE package (before even getting to the specifics of Qualcomm). Therefore, they still have to test it for their network as any other carrier would. Unfortunately, that testing, while it may be thorough and necessary, is always a bit "longer" with Verizon, regardless of device.

I mean the RAZR was released at the same time, right? Does it have ICS yet, or is it still running on FroYo or whatever the hell it came with? ;)

I've just read that Verizon has started to push it out in waves. I'm searching for a Verizon statement. Did anyone get it yet via ota?

That wouldn't shock me. They started a roll out a few weeks ago, then placed the same update package on their servers a few days ago. Presumably the soak test went well and it's going to be pushed out.

Of course, with updates like this people need to realize it doesn't come at once. Different regions/areas will get it first, mainly b/c they don't want to destroy the update servers.

Yeah I download the zip that Google put up on weds night but if it's a matter of a few days or hopefully hours then I'm going to wait. I'm in NJ Verizon's home state but I doubt that has anything to do with which areas get it first.

The whole point of having a nexus, is so you don't have to wait for updates.

You can root and have the latest update with just about any phone

That's been debated quite intensely over the past month or so ;).

I disagree. While I don't actually think they are delaying on purpose, *IF* they were it would be because we pissed them off so much when they were delaying the phone's release.

I think that would be a rather foolish tactic for a major corporation like Verizon. I also don't think a major corporation like Verizon gives a damn about our opinion, may it be during the delay, on release day, or now.

Same here. If this is how Verizon does the nexus, I'll be cancelling 3 lines and get off contract GSM nexus phones from now on.

@pool_shark nice points, I like your dual-sided view.

For the record... I'm not bashing anyone for choosing not to root. If I'm bashing at all, it's because of those who:
1. Choose to keep a phone they aren't satisfied with.
2. Choose not to exchange it for a phone they would be happier with.
3. Choose to wait for an OTA rather than take some time and do it themselves.
And 4. Choose to complain incessantly in the forums about all their choices, as if there weren't more productive things they could do with their time.

Even if it's your work phone and you can't unlock it, I'm sure it can't be more trouble to have it exchanged for something else if it sucks that much for you than it is to sit and wait for months reading and posting the same stuff in the forums, all for an OTA which you don't even know for sure will fix your issues. Just being logical.

Also the common cry of "It should work perfectly out of the box"... Why is that? Does all technology follow that rule? I don't think so. That's why you are supposed to research before you buy things, especially technology.. Rather than slap your money on the counter as soon as you see the shiniest phone in the store.

If you didn't KNOW that Verizon is slow as hell to approve updates, didn't KNOW that Samsung radios are subpar in the phone world, didn't KNOW exactly what a Nexus was supposed to be, then you didn't do a lick of research before investing your money, and you have only yourself to blame. Luckily for you verizon is pretty accommodating and even after all this time I bet they'll still let you exchange for a different phone. Lesson learned, next time do your homework.

Thanks for the 'great' advice. Just so you know 1) I don't complain incessantly and don't often post here. Where did that come from? 2) I DID know Samsung made lousy radios, I had a Charge 3) I did do research and heard nothing but great things from both pro reviews and people here 4) whats the point of these forums if most here are ignorant as you seem to imply?

Thanks for all your great input. Not.

It is a developer phone, that's the point of a Nexus. And every single one of them was the top of the line Android phone when released.

No. The nexus is a developer friendly phone. I bought it for vanilla.

Tier 2 just told me the ota is coming next week. Doubt that. She couldn't give me a straight answer on how the iPhone pushes updates. Then she told me that they are working on bug fixes for the razor and the rezound. All she wanted to do was switch my nexus out. Then I asked when 4.0.4 was coming, she said the beginning of May(then said , why did I say that). She then said its all on Samsung, not Google or Verizon. So basically no one knows anything. Maybe we will get an ota after jellybean. But after this and the last conversation I had with Verizon I'm done. 4G LTE all around and drop the signal. Voicemail that comes in 4 days late, and a random reboot 8 times in a row while I'm trying to answer an important text. Not worth 500GB per second. Besides she had no answer when asked why I have to void my warranty to get a 100% working phone.

I called verizon again today just to inquire about the update and after 10 minutes she couldn't find anything whatsoever. She asked to put me on hold because her associate that was theior has a gnex and asked him if he'd heard anything because he has impatiently been waiting and stuck on 4.0.2 and he couldn't find anything out from anyone in the company. Pretty odd that their aren't any rumors for employees who work at vzw, they must levy heavy fines or something for revealing anything about they great and powerful "Oz"

Where does this come from? I've had Blackberry devices on Verizon along with an HTC Incredible, HTC Incredible 2, HTC Thunderbolt, Droid Bionic and Droid RAZR MAXX and all have had regular updates and many of them had multiple updates by this time after their release.

Are you sure this is a Verizon issue and not a manufacture issue as the updates seem to come quickest from Motorola on the devices I've owned.

I meant it relatively--relative to other carriers, Verizon can seem downright lethargic. Individual devices and manufacturers have their discrepancies (e.g. the GN not having ICS, the RAZR/MAXX not having ICS, the Rezound using whatever archaic version of GB it uses, etc.), and one big discrepancy is with the 4.0.4 update here.

I've had only 3 smartphone devices, one of which, the DINC, I would not characterize as receiving "quick updates"--at least quick "major" updates. It updated to Gingerbread when, last summer, June or July? That's simply unacceptable IMO, but then again, I was merely an observer in that update battle b/c of my obvious device usage.

That being said, Verizon has more control over this process than other carriers, and their industry position shows.
