in next 6 months, 5 million Nexus 7 tablets vs 34 million iPads?

I'm a little confused as to why Google only expects to sell around 5 million Nexus 7 tablets
for the remainder of 2012.(actually, it was Asus that sais they only expect to ship 5 million)

Compare that to Apple's projected sales of 34 million iPads for the remainder of 2012.
(for a grad total of 69 million iPad during the entire 2012)

What can possibly cause Google to have such a low expectation of sales? Granted, 5 million
is nothing to sneeze at, but that's hardly a large number compared to iPads.

(note: I own 3 Android tablets and one 64GB 3G iPad 2...)

It's simple - Google doesn't have the retail distribution presence of Apple or Amazon and they aren't known yet as a big online store. Hence lower sales expectations.

Have you seen this launch? Google can't scale or do logistics.

Now compare that to Apple's network in 100+ countries. Not just for hardware. But for content too. Amazon may well steal sales abroad too, largely because of content.

And I'm sure the iPad Mini will impact sales too.

That said, I would've hoped at least a million at launch and another 9 million by Christmas.

The Nexus 7 is a great device, but Google just simply didn't put an effort in marketing. Apple is amazing at marketing. They are the best, in fact. Also, Apple has a certain 'hip' factor that comes with it. One more thing. Apple makes one HELL of a product in the iPad. It's unrivaled in the 10" tablet world.\

All that said, I'd much rather have my 7" Nexus equipped with JellyBean.

And I'm sure the iPad Mini will impact sales too.

I personally don't think we will see the mini. At least not this year.

You're absolutely correct. Combine Apple's marketing prowess with the iPad's impressive array of hardware and software features, and you've got a device that makes it awfully difficult for anyone else to compete in this sector.

The iPad dominates the tablet market. Nexus 7 isn't going to change that over night, or even over 6 months.

I think the Nexus 7 could be the best selling Android tablet ever. But I don't think it'll catch up to the iPad. But I think it's going to move Android tablets in the right direction.

And yet Amazon is negotiating with Google to sell the Nexus 7. I think Kindle is dying. The Nook, well it just needs to be buried.

If Amazon and Google both team up to sell content with the Nexus 7 (to infinity, and beyond!) they could start giving iPad a run for it's money. With Steve Jobs (RIP Steve, you were a pioneer! From a non Apple fan) gone, Apple seems to be focusing more on business than on innovation. And it was always innovation that created the business of Apple.

They need a bigger marketing push to establish the Nexus brand in the public mind (and try to get Google Play's reach in terms of content expanded internationally). It's just not realistic to expect for Google to gain any significant numbers over the iPad especially since Apple is a juggernaut in terms of brand image.

Ya, I read the Amazon thing earlier. Given that info, I'm really curious to see what may or may not happen with the next gen Kindle Fire that was rumored to be revealed later this year.

Amazon could just want a piece of the Nexus 7 sales because they know it'll sell - along with pushing the Fire. But they could see a lot of potential in it and just kill the Fire completely.

If Apple launches the 'iPad Mini' they are certainly going to give Google a run for their money.

Sure it'll cost more and won't be as portable. But what will sell will be it's polish and app selection. I'm already finding apps that are atrocious on the Nexus 7 (my own bank's app (ING Direct) was terrible).

I predict a month or so there's going to be a lot more people talking about how bad tablet apps look on the N7. And then Apple will launch with a tablet and demonstrate flawless scaling of apps on stage.

Aside from that...content. Here in Canada, there's no Google Music, no Magazines, no TV shows. Actually, the only market that gets decent content selection is the USA. Amazon has lots of room to cream Google here. And you can bet they'll have some kind of content offer and a $149.99 price tag at launch for the KF 2.

The Big G needs to get its together. Or Amazon will eat their lunch and Apple their dinner.

The Kindle is going nowhere. The Kindle 2 will be as powerful as the Nexus. It may even be the same hardware, only with Amazon's skin over the OS. Amazon is way too big and way too smart to throw in the towel so easily. Heck the Kindle 1 would continue to sell if it weren't for the fact that it's hit saturation. It's easier to sell people with an aging Kindle a Kindle 2 rather than just another Kindle. Awkward sentence there but I think you get my point.

Google will sell a lot, Amazon will sell a lot, maybe even a new Nook (maybe) will sell.

As for giving the iPad a run, well that's happening already. Droid numbers are up but it's fragmented. As Rootbrain siad Amazon and Google need to be more cohesive. It won't come from one giving up however. It will come from allowing each others app stores on each others devices and making the new Amazon os (I doubt they'll ever use stock droid) more compatible with Jelly Bean.

One factor we've all forgotten also. Google is selling these at or below cost. This was said all along to be an attention getter more than anything else. Google isn't fully committed to having a Nexus in every home. They just want Android in every home.

I have a Galaxy Tab 2 right now (also 7") and I really don't have too many complaints of apps that look terrible. There are some that you can tell obviously aren't made for larger screens - but that all comes down to the developers (and also sort of Google to encourage the developers to work with these things). I'd also say that the users can play a role in that. You mention the ING app - let them know it looks like crap on a tablet. Some companies are open to that kind of feedback.

Any iPad mini will sell well just because it's Apple and people know Apple. As someone else mentioned above, pretty much no one knows what a Nexus anything is unless they're tech people to begin with. Even if an every day user knows what Android is, they likely have no idea that Google sells branded devices of their own. And that's a marketing problem.

I think the Kindle Fire is just getting started. The first Kindle Fire did quite well consider it was rushed and basically recycling the Blackberry Playbook hardware design.

The Kindle Fire 2 should be coming out soon. Amazon will have had time to make their own design this time, hopefully something with a volume rocker, haha. I imagine it could give the Nexus 7 some challenge.

I hope the Nook Tablet doesn't die. These companies that provide both content and hardware are nice to have around, they usually sell the hardware pretty cheap to push use towards their content. But I am a bit worried about B&N. Hope they can continue hanging in their and provide new Nook soon. The hardware of the Nook Tablet wasn't bad, but may god it's the ugliest damn tablets. B&N needs to get away from using those cheap looking raised bezels.

1) google does not have b&m stores to sell the Nexus 7 (i.e. their own, like apple does)
2) the Nexus7 is wifi only, so the cell carriers wont be selling them, unlike the ipads with 3G.

I find it interesting that people keep claiming that Amazon and Apple have a significant lead in content internationally. From listening to the various Mobile Nations podcasts that is not the impression I get. It seems that they all struggle with content(music and video) internationally, and that if Google were to get it completely figured out before the other's they would have the advantage.
