[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

Another question I was just thinking about.

I got Best Buy insurance when I got my current phone, Razr Maxx. So regardless of the shape or condition my phone's in, long as I bring it to them i'll get a replacement or temp phone if they don't have them in stock.

If I get this new phone, guessing I lose that insurance?

E-bay offers Squaretrade but I might just go back to Asurion.

Best Buy insurance covers only the specific serial number and it's replacements. The new best buy insurance policy is crap.

What do you have dpham?

I like Asurion, it was just a pain having to ship the phone to them instead of having a replacement right there but i'd keep my Maxx as a backup.

Great! Where were all of you with this info last year? :-)

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

I didn't know about this Best Buy "trick" until recently, the first time I posted actually. I was reading a thread on Droidforums, and was linked to this thread. It can't be that bad for Verizon though, I am locked in for 2 more years now, UDP and all. Anyone who is month to month would be a risk to leave. Verizon has the best coverage where I live, so I don't think I woul be changing carriers anyway. This way I keep my bill and plan unchanged, and get a decent price for a new phone, with the ability to do warranty stuffs if needed. Couldn't do that with a used one, and the unsubsidized store price is simply redonkulous. I mean, my bill didn't go down after my 2 year contract/subsidy was up, even though my old phone was now 'mine," so I might as well get a new phone and use that built in subsidy cost that Verizon never removes!

I was told that if you still have time left on your Best Buy policy when you get a new phone that they will give you credit in that amount towards a new policy on the new device.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

Sorry if this is a noob question, but can I upgrade another line on a family plan, and then activate the phone using old sim on main line? Main line is currently still in contract and is using gnex. Will this take away the udp on the line that gets upgraded? Or does it only trigger removal of udp when you activate the new phone?
Do all of the lines on the family plan have UDPs? If not, there is an easier way to do this.

No one knew this would work until the OP of this thread did it and showed us it worked.

Yes, but key is new policy... Which would be under current terms. You can ask for a prorated refund for the original purchase

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just broke my Razr Maxx, the screen broke from the backside (not cracked in the front). I want to keep my unlimited plan. I would just order a new phone online, but I'd rather get my new phone tomorrow since the screen does not work at all and I cannot make or accept calls unless I'm hooked into something bluetooth. I need to get a new phone tomorrow.

I have an available upgrade on my Girls account and She has a basic smartphone phone. Can I simply go into the store and Upgrade her phone to a smartphone then do the rest of the steps online to avoid dealing with reps?

As I understand it:
1) I upgrade her basic phone to a smartphone (she does not need to be present) creating a new two year contract for her.
2) When I get home I deactivate the new smartphone online, and re-activate her old phone.
3) I swap the sim card in my old phone with my new phone?

Won't I still be under a 2 year contract to keep data on her basic phone? I don't understand how the 2 year data contract goes away?

That process will work, but step 3 also includes activating the new phone on your unlimited line. You're contract is to have service on the line, not to have a data plan on the line. A data plan is only required if you have a smart device. You might be set up with a data plan if the dumb phone is internet capable, if so you can block internet, and that will result in the charge being $0.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

After you upgrade I'm pretty sure your girl will have the 2yr contract on her basic phone. I'm pretty sure that doesn't go away.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok, good to know. Too bad all the new phones are scheduled to come out next month, so I have to buy something that has been out for a year already... I might be better off just using my insurance and saving the upgrade for two months.

Yes. But make sure you have her phone with you because it must be off to activate the new phone. Also, they will ask you if you want to transfer her contacts, pics, etc. to your new phone. Just say no.

As I understand it:
1) I upgrade her basic phone to a smartphone (she does not need to be present) creating a new two year contract for her.
Correct, but her phone needs to be off so I would just bring her phone with you. Again, just decline to transfer contacts, pics, etc. And pick the 2GB data plan if she currently has a basic phone on her line.

2) When I get home I deactivate the new smartphone online, and re-activate her old phone.
Well, you don't deactivate the new smartphone. What you do is turn it off and reactive her old phone on her line. When you do that, if she has a basic phone it may or may not drop the 2GB data plan. If it doesn't, just pick pay as you go or block data on the line if you don't want her using any data at all.

3) I swap the sim card in my old phone with my new phone?
Yes.

Won't I still be under a 2 year contract to keep data on her basic phone?
No, according to Verizon data is a feature that can be changed at any time and is not part of the contract. The only caveat to that is if you buy from a 3rd party retailer other than Best Buy or Costco. They may charge you a secondary ETF because you are forming a contract with them to keep the data plan for at least 181 days. But that is not true with Verizon, Best Buy or Costco.

I don't understand how the 2 year data contract goes away?
The 2 year contract is only that you will keep the line active for 2 years and not cancel the line. You can change minutes, texts, data and other features at any time. You just can't cancel the line for 2 years without paying an ETF.

True, but you can drop the data plan without any consequences.

I doubt new Motorolas are coming out next month. The Samsung Galaxy S5 will be here sometime in spring or early summer.

so I have to buy something that has been out for a year already... I might be better off just using my insurance and saving the upgrade for two months.
If you have insurance, that is what I would do. The deductible is only $99.

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon?

Hi All I would like to go this route. Use Bestbuy for upgrade and keep my UD. However, can I simply take the new phone and give it to my wife who has her own account? Would that affect my UD? Would the new phone activate under her normal share everything account?

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon?

under her normal share everything account?
I am not following you. Are you saying you have an individual nationwide plan with unlimited data and your wife has a share everything plan? Because if that is what you are saying, what you need to do is add her line to your individual nationwide plan and convert it to a family nationwide plan and drop her share everything plan.

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon?

Yes I have individual plan with unlimited data. My wife has her own plan with shared data. We are not able to merge our plans because of work. So can I use my upgrade and simply give her the phone to use? Happy wife happy life right?

Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon?

Actually, all you need to do is cancel the line within 3 days and return the phone unactivated. You will be refunded the activation fee and the purchase price.

THEN add a new line and get a subsidized iPhone 5s. But tonight, get on ebay and buy a used basic phone first.

Okay so let me get this correct before I do anything.

I just got her basic phone in the mail yesterday. If I call VZ and tell them I want to return the phone and cancel her line? They won't charge anything for me to do this? I won't be charged for the ETF of $175? What happens if they won't cancel the line? Or does returning the phone automatically cancel the added line? Bc I know they'll ask me what phone I want to exchange and they won't happy if I say best buy.

If they do cancel the line and accept to return of phone, I them go into best buy, say I want to add a line and then buy the iPhone 5c for $50? In the mean time I find her a basic phone? I already have a basic phone for her to use, just found one. Do I have to buy and activate the iPhone first before switching her to the used basic phone I just found or can I go ahead and have her use this old one now and then pickup the iPhone tomorrow after returning it to a store if they'll take it. Hopefully they won't make me ship it back. She needs a phone ASAP so I don't know what to do. My dad also is interested in getting a line too so we call sell two iPhones.

Can you give me a step-by-step guide on what to do with the phone I currently have that I just purchased and where I go from here. I don't want to screw anything up. VZW is I open until 11pm I believe so I'll wait for your reply. You've been more than helpful thanks.
