[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Best Buy changed their policy in March corporate wide. In a widely-reported press release, they announced they do not price match on contract phones any longer. It is on their website, too. They will no longer do it. It used to be done on a store-by-store basis, but no more.

Ah, okay :) So either way, if attempting the methodology to keep unlimited data, Best Buy is still cheaper because of the lack of a $400 fee. So choices are essentially Cosco, Best Buy and Verizon?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Is that only an option when you have a device on the plan that is not already eligible for upgrade (like when I add a new basic phone) or should I already be seeing that?
Thanks again!
yes, a line can't have 2 upgrades on it at the same time. So get a new phone with the added basic line, then transfer one upgrade to it at a time.

You could still call and ask. You might get lucky. But yes, official policy is that they don't price match contract phones anymore.

But really sure why people are saying that this new policy ends show roomimg, before they would do contract phones and can pm anytime in 30 days. Now, no contract phone pm, and reduced return policy from 30 to 15 days. Also, pm time has been reduced from 30 days to one minute, or thereabouts.

I kinda agree... other than people specifically attempting to keep unlimited data, this seems to be a damned good incentive to buy wherever the best deal is.. which now may or may not be Best Buy, whereas before it was more than likely Best Buy... they're decreasing their odds of being the final seller.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sorry I have not read the whole thread :( am on my (stupid) smart phone :( okay so I have unlimited data on my iPhone 4 which apparently I am on a month to month as my contract expired. My mom has a dumb phone which is up for renewal and she needs a new phone. Can I still do this even though I am no longer under contract? And more importantly, can my mom still get a new phone? (Maybe under my renewal?) please LMK as I desperately need a new phone as I cut out a lot on this one. TIA :)

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks for your response! I also have an additional follow up question. I noticed that people are posting things about SIM cards. Is this something I have to worry about? I thought Verizon phones did not have physical SIM cards anymore. Sorry, if this question is obvious.

Both of the last 2 phones I purchased did. If they stopped using them, I'm not sure when that was.

All Verizon 4GLTE phones require sim card. 4GLTE is gsm technology

Verizon is planning volte, perhaps someday Verizon would strictly be gsm.

1. Use your mom's upgrade for her and get the phone she wants--this will extend her contract for 2 years
2. Go online to Verizonwireless.com and transfer your upgrade to her line.
3. Get the smartphone you want for yourself. It will extend your contract for 2 years with Unlimited Data.
4. Activate the smartphone on your mom's line first.
5. OPTIONAL: Wait a day before switching the smartphone to your line as a precaution.
6. When you do activate it on your line, use a new SIM Card--may not be necessary-but just a precautionary measure.
***You can do all the swapping and activating on Verizonwireless.com through your account and should not need to call
7. Watch your account to ensure you are keeping Unlimited
8. If you see a change, call right away. Good Luck

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have an individual account with just the one grandfathered line. And it feels like it's going to take an act of Congress for me to keep it. I've never gone over 4GB in the many years I've had this plan, but I'll be damned if I'm going to roll over and give it back to them.

I'll probably try the Best Buy thing in May when I'm eligible for upgrade because I really don't want to pay for an additional line - although it sounds like if I can get an additional line it will be easier in the future.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello :)

I'm a newbie and have a dilemma...I'm hoping someone can help me?

For the past few months I've been having a lot of troubles with my original HTC Rezound and the 3 defective replacements they have sent me as well. So, after I called the VZW Business Support Center and told them the third replacement was still defective, I was given the option to do an early upgrade. I'm on a business plan since my phone is through my work (I'm on a 9.99 Share Plan, which I don't pay for) and I still can get unlimited data (I added it in 2010, thank god! - people on the "Personal Consumer" side have sadly lost this option).

According to my business account rep, because of a stipulation implemented in January, when I do my next upgrade (whether I choose to do it early or wait) I will lose the unlimited data plan unless I:

A) Downgrade back to a 3G phone
B) Pay full retail price for the phone from VZW
C) Get an unlocked clean phone off of eBay and go to the VZW store and activate it

What do you suggest I do? I am the "Google Queen" in my circle and look up things for everyone, so really like that I can surf and look up anything I need to anytime and not have to worry about usage. Any loopholes or tricks you can give me? Especially if you are a VZW rep ;)

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

And I promise my last question... corporate store or authorized retailer?

At last count, Verizon corporate store, Best Buy and Cosco are the only places that you can purchase the device while avoiding extra fees from the retailer for making changes to the account after the upgrade.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just got back from costco. I had an upgrade available on one of my basic lines and he knew all about the loophole and hooked us up. Came back with a galaxy s3 for the wifey and still with unlimited data. He also said that costco carries a 90 day return period which is different from the 14 day return. He said within that 90 day period you can exchange your phone for the same phone or a totally new one if you are not satisfied. Anyone had any experience with this?

Wow, I'm glad you were set up with such a knowledgeable associate. That's great to know about their return policy. I'm not 100% sure about the return windows Verizon typically observes, but I do think based on what I've read here that the 14 days on Verizon's end will still lock your contract changes in, even if you change devices during days 15-90.

Yep he was super cool. He told me to come back for my next upgrade which is next month and he'll do the same for my other unlimited line. Now the question is do I get the s4, dna or htc one. Lol

If you're waiting until May, might as well see what's announced at Google I/O before making that decision. There is a significant chance that for the first time in many years, Motorola might be the way to go depending on which rumors for the X Phone are true and which are not.

Oh yeah' that is one of the phones I'm also keeping tabs on. For now I'll be waiting patiently for my jelly bean update on my bionic which should hold me till then.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

do it while you can. almost all outside retailers have changed their policy to stop this loop hole.

iv been seeing this (kind of hidden) on almost every retailers website.
By accepting this Instant Savings Discount, you agree to repay $200 of this discount ($400 for smartphones, tablets, and netbooks) and authorize us to charge your credit card in repayment of this amount if, you signed up for a 2 year agreement and during the 181 days after your new equipment is activated, Verizon Wireless notifies us that the services you purchased have been suspended, disconnected, or deactivated, or if you return your purchase outside of the return and exchange provisions of our Satisfaction Guarantee.
Other than you simply deactivating a line we've activated, Verizon Wireless could notify us that you deactivated if:
You fail to pay Verizon Wireless in accordance with their terms and conditions
You transfer equipment we activate on one line to another Verizon Wireless line, even within the same account
You activate this equipment on a new line of service on Verizon Wireless and use it to replace an existing Verizon Wireless line by deactivating the existing line.

seems to be its closing up quick :(
