[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Does putting the SIM from the other/old phone into the new phone, but not calling to activate the phone, mean that Verizon thinks you are using the phone the SIM came from?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

At the least Verizon should give you the 6g deal they offer grandfathered UDP customers who switch.

So after reading through this thread I decided to give it a shot, and ordered an HTC One a couple of days ago. It just arrived, I swapped out the SIM from my dying Droid 4, and called the number to activate expecting it to fail. However, it activated successfully and now my account shows 2gb of data... did I miss a step somewhere? I'm really not looking forward to fighting to have this all undone and then find some other way to get a new phone that doesn't lock up every 5 minutes...

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

I'm worried that if I get a SIM card activated for my account that they'll take away my UDP. Thoughts?

Droid X2 is a 3G phone so it doesn't have a SIM card. What you need to do is find a 4G LTE phone you can activate on your account so that you can get a SIM card activated for you account.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Ok so last update to my upgrade experience. My billing cycle started over yesterday so i want to check out my UDP situation after it started over. And it is still showing my UDP intact. So i got my subsidized upgrade and got to keep my UDP with not issues or hassles from BestBuy or Verizon. Needless to say i am a very happy camper. Thanks for everyone's posts.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So whats the best fool proof way to get the upgrade?

I have:
1 line with unlimited data, Thunderbolt, upgrade available.
1 dumb phone with an upgrade available.
1 dumb phone with no upgrade available.

Buy Droid Maxx on dumb phone line, activate Maxx on dumb phone line. Reactive basic phone on the same line.

Then activate Maxx on the Thunderbolt line? But will that require switching sim cards? Both Maxx and Thunderbolt have different sized sim cards.

You would need a new nano SIM card for your line or cut your existing card once the basic line has been reactivated

How can you obtain a new nano sim, by going to a Verizon store or online? Will they inquire why a new sim is needed?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Verizon probably won't give you a sim unless you currently have a compatible device. If you know someone with a nano sim phone, then you can borrow their phone bring it into the store to get the sim card. Otherwise, third party retailers would probably sell you one or ebay

No, it would not require switching SIM cards if you use the dumb phone line's upgrade. You just reprogram the SIM card that came in the Maxx for the UDP line. No new SIM card needed and no risk of losing UDP since you are not using your UDP line's upgrade nor are you transferring your UDP lines upgrade.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just make sure you activate the phone on the dumb phones line first. Then go online and transfer the phone over to your unlimited line.

Oh my so many responses...

All this seems complicated and scary, I'm just thinking about buying the Moto X off contract instead. Really want a Maxx though.

If I do go with the dumb phone line upgrade, will Verizon charge anything extra?

You may get hit with the $35 upgrade fee.

I think it is BS..... But it is what it is

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It is easy if you want the Maxx

Buy the phone in the dumb line.

Activate on that line.... Basically just turn it on and follow Verizon's directions.

Then turn the new phone off

Go to Verizon online and switch the dumb phone back on.

The on Verizon online ad the phone to your unlimited line.

Follow those directions and you will be fine.

Just make sure you don't make any changes to your unlimited plan.

If you have any issues check back here and we will help you :-)

Thanks guys, I'll try doing that tonight and report back.

And by doing this my bill will not change at all, correct?

Thank you @SmashedPumpkins for providing the YouTube video. I got my iPhone, and using the template and nail filer got my old phone's micro Sim down to a nano Sim card. All is looking good. Phone is working great. Praise the Lord!!
Will check on the UDP status in a couple of weeks and let ya'll know if all is still good. Thank you also to all others on this forum. Great and resourceful information! :D
