[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Can't seem to purchase a phone at BestBuy.com

I believe the Droid Razr Maxx uses a micro sim card while the iPhone 5S using a nano sim card. You'll be able to tell once it arrives or by watching this video. However, you can easily but carefully cut your old sim card down to a nano size. The following video should answer your questions.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just chatted with a Verizon, the guy had different instructions compared to whats on the previous page. Verizon guy stated you can just activate the new smart phone on the unlimited plan when the phone arrives. No need to activate it on the basic line first....so whats the correct process?

Verizon:
Daniel: Are you wanting to use the upgrade on 1 basic line, get a smart phone, then activate the new phone on the line with the unlimited?
Me:Yes, if possible
Daniel: Yes you can do that :-)
Me: And that would not cause an increase in the bill, correct?
Daniel: That is correct. Because you would activate the new phone on the smart phone line.
Daniel: You can up grade the line from your online account or you can call into telesales and when you receive the phone simply activate it on your line.
Daniel: But do not use your upgrade, your the basic line and the upgrade fee would be waived because of going from "basic to smart".
Me: Great. So to summarize... Step one - chose to upgrade a basic phone to a smart phone. Once the phone arrives activate the smart phone on the unlimited line. Then call to have the data plan removed?
Daniel: That is correct.

First, I would never trust a Verizon rep since so many of them do not know what they are talking about. However, I have read that that works. Again, you are not using or transferring a UDP line's upgrade nor are you transferring a basic phone's upgrade to a UDP line to make a purchase. You are just using a basic phone line's upgrade on the basic phone line so you should be fine.

However, I would just go ahead and activate it on the basic phone line first to avoid any potential issues. If you do activate it on the basic phone line first, there will be no issues with your UDP line for sure. The other way may work too, but for sure if you activate it on the basic phone line first, you will keep your UDP.

Just to clarify, you are removing the data plan from the basic phone line. I know you know that, but I wanted others reading this to fully understand what you were saying.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have four lines on my account. 2 unlim and 2 feature phones.
I was gonna use one of the feature phones to upgrade using this technique. When I went to buy the phone on contract, i was hit with a $35 activation fee! On VZW chat, I was told that Vzn is waiving this fee thru 3/31... in the form of a credit on my bill withing 2-3 cycles.
Do you think they will now be scrutinizing my bill and tricks and nail me on my unlimited data phone swap?

Re: Can't seem to purchase a phone at BestBuy.com

First off, this site/thread both rock. Thanks to everyone for the helpful posts and feedback. That being said, I decided to attempt this endeavor. Wife and I both have unlimited data plans. I have a GS3, and she has HTC Thunderbolt, and I have GNex with a broken screen that's not active but has an extra sim card. She's willing to give up the unlimited, if need be, but prefers not to. I ordered a GS4 for her under her account. It arrived today, but I haven't activated it yet. It uses a smaller sim card than the HTC. I wanted to figure out a way to activate the other inactive sim card I have on her account. I'm not sure I could do that with the broken GNex or not, or if I'd have to try to activate my GS3 on her account with the other sim. Sorry if I rambled, but any suggestions? Much appreciated.

A GS3 has a micro sim card and an HTC Thunderbolt has a mini sim card. I don't know what sim card a GNex has. Is it the same as her GS3? The GS4 is also uses a micro sim card. You can simply remove her sim card from the GS3 and place it in the GS4. You should not have to activate it or do anything additional. Turn the phone on with her GS3 sim card and it should work. As for upgrading your line, you can trim your Thunderbolt sim card down to a micro size by following the previous video I posted. If you're set on trying to use your old GNex sim card, assuming it's a micro sim card, you can buy a micro to mini sim card adapter and try to get Verizon to activate that sim card on your Thunderbolt. Once it's activated, you can then place the micro sim card into your new phone. Unless you buy an iPhone in which you'll need to trim it to nano size. You have a lot of options...

GNex is a micro SIM.

It's an upgrade fee and it is $30 + tax. They charge it to everyone anytime they use an upgrade.

No, they will not scrutinize your bill, lol! I am sure the credit is automated.

And if you are using a feature phone's upgrade, it wouldn't cause you to lose your UDP anyhow. It is only when you use an UDP line's upgrade that you have to worry and engage in trickery.

$35 Activation fee is only charged on new line of service, and is occasionally waived depending on the promotion at the time . The $30 upgrade fee is only assessed when upgrading to a new device on contract

Thanks guys, one last question and then I'm ready to order. Should I have the phone shipped to my home or pick it up at a store...if that makes any difference at all.

Thanks again.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Since the wireless on my wife's iPhone 4 stopped working yesterday, this has become even more urgent. I bought a Droid Razr for cheap on Craigslist and will order her a new 5s from Best Buy. I understand I'll have to cut down the SIM from the Razr to fit the iPhone 5s. For me, I'll see if I can wait until BB restocks the G2 for Verizon. If/when that happens, I'll cut down the SIM from my Rezound and put it in the G2.

Anyone see any issues with that approach?

Thanks

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I have a potentially stupid question. I want to go to Verizon to buy a case for my iPhone because I get a company discount. Can they see that I bought the phone at BB? I was planning on telling them I purchased full retail price. Am I risking saving my UDP?

Accessory sales have no impact whatsoever on unlimited data. I have bought cases under my unlimited line at a Verizon corporate store a few times and no issues

If there is one recurring theme on this thread at all, it is do not involve verizon reps at all. So absolutely not should you have it shipped to the store. Why would you even think that is a good idea? What benefit could you possibly get by involving a verizon rep?

To get it faster lol. I'll have it shipped to my home.

Thanks all.

Excited to know my GN3 is out for delivery today. Can anyone please tell me if it comes with 4.4 pre-installed?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Ok so I'm a dumbbutt--I forgot I had Asurion insurance when I purchased the Geek Squad insurance after buying the phone from Best Buy. I'm leaning towards the GS insurance (but I'll take arguments for both plans)...do you think my UDP would be affected by dropping the Asurion through VZW's website?
