[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I would expect them to pro rate it. If they tell you you have to leave data on then you have 14 days to return it.

thanks. i really dont want the smart phone for line 4, but i understand ill need to pay $30 a month for data due to the S5 upgrade. WOuld i be able to change back to a basic phone and pay $9.99 a month or ill be stuck paying $30 a month?

You should be able to switch the data off after you move the dumb phone back on.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi! I have followed the instructions in the thread so far. I used a dumb phone upgrade to get a motorola maxx. I activated it on the dumb phone line and then switched the dumb phone back. What should I do now to activate the motorola maxx on my line? Do I have to switch the sim card? How does that work? Thanks in advance!!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all,

I've been reading through this thread and the other on the main page, trying to get some idea of the best route to take in my situation. Any advice you could give would be much appreciated.

I currently have a family plan with Verizon that includes 3 smartphones with unlimited data and 1 dumb phone (no data). The dumb phone and 2 of the smartphones are eligible for upgrades currently. I want to get a new phone on my line (the smartphone that is not eligible for an upgrade yet) without losing unlimited data. Problem is, my current phone is so old (original HTC Incredible from 2010) that it does not actually have a sim card (or so I've been led to believe). So if I upgrade one of the other lines and then try switch the new phone to my line to preserve my unlimited data, I'm concerned about how I would go about reactivating the new phone on my line without an existing sim card to put into it. Will the new phone come with a sim card that can be disassociated from the line I use to upgrade and then reassociated with my line? Given all this, what would be the best way to try to go about upgrading without losing unlimited data? If necessary, I don't mind switching one of the other unlimited data lines to a capped plan, as long as I can keep unlimited data on mine (I've also heard if you have to get rid of unlimited, they can give you a 6GB plan instead of the usual 2GB for the same price, is that true?). For reference, the other 2 smartphones are another 2010 HTC Incredible and an iPhone 4. Thanks in advance!!

you can go online and activate the phone using the sim card that came with the phone. It should work fine.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

It seems the SIM card method still works. Got my Moto X last night from Motomaker, cut my microSIM down to a nanoSIM, put it in the X, powered on and was good to go.

Now to claim my Best Buy gift card. :)

edit: Forgot to mention that the Verizon site shows my Moto X as activated and my UDP still in place.

anyone else try this through MotoMaker? I've gotten as far as the "Shipping Address" screen and it does say "powered by Best Buy". Just seems like with all of the customization options (background graphic, start up message) that MotoMaker would have to power up the phone...unless they are using a "dummy" sim to do all modifications.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I am hoping that this was answered already but then again I didn't read 106 pages of this thread.

I have a Samsung S3 and want to buy out right the S5 to replace my S3.
I am grand fathered with unlimited data.
I went to the verizon web site to preorder however it tries to force me into the new plans.

How can I get around that ?

Do I have to call them and talk with someone ?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

How do you get the order to go through? Is that on a separate line?
Every time I try to check out it gives me Error 53 :/

I remember just filling in my Verizon details to verify my eligibility for an upgrade, and then clicking the button that said "Keep Existing Plan" which showed up after the Upgrade Check went through successfully. After, I then went through checkout as normal, no special method. Not sure what Error 53 is.

Most times when you call they will try and talk you into a new plan as well

Follow up question for everyone... How long do I have to leave the dumb phone activated with data before I can move it over to my UDP line?

Yes I've gotten that before as well.

Thing is, will I get past that and be able to retain my unlimited.

There is no minimum timeframe, reactivate the dumb phone line then transfer the smartphone to your unlimited line

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

I ordered two HTC M8s from BB this past weekend on my account which has only two UDP lines. Both at the 2 year subsidized price.
My VZW account already shows the contract renewal and data plan still says Unlimited for both lines.
I received a shipment notification today, BB didn't call to "modify the order" as others have reported, no Error 53 either.

Now the wait to get the phone and trim my existing full size SIM to fit the M8!

Will post an update once I get the phones activated.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

I received the Error 53 message yesterday as well. Then I remembered that my billing zip code on file is different than my actually billing zip code. Will try again today when I get home from work.

PS: not sure if Motomaker will work, but not going to try it either.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hey everyone. New here, but decided to give a clear update as of 4/7/14 as to whether or not you can still upgrade via Best Buy without losing UDP. I just odered the M8 via BestBuy.com (it was even $50 off :D) anyway, when it arrives, I will post back here whether or not it killed my UDP. Should be in about a week. So far it looks like we might be in business still. If you are having trouble getting through the shopping cart without selecting their share more plan crap, you need to enter your verizonwireless.com password in the field that requests it. I tried without doing so and I couldn't bypass the second page; Once I entered my password for Verizon, it allowed me to 'keep my current data plan'

Stay tuned!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Could someone please summarize the current possible ways to keep UDP, the thread is a little confusing to follow. And im sure it will help others as well.
For me specifically, I'm looking to upgrade from the S3 to the S5 this week.
Thanks so much!

Buy a S5 from Best Buy website, choose keep same plan, when you get it put in old SIM before you turn it on. Done

Thank you! I had read earlier in the thread that keeping the old sim card would prevent phone upgrades? Is there any truth to that?
