[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

VZW now offering BOGO on Galaxy S5 pre-orders. Anyone know if Best Buy ever matches these kinds of promotions? I want to do the sim card trick to keep my unlimited data, but the BOGO if very attractive as well.

I'm with you. I think the only way I'd upgrade now to the S5 is if the Best Buy method works and it is a deal approximate to the BOGO. UDP is just too good right now to give up, even though I'm still using my GNEX (it's really not that bad, but the battery life is terrible and Chrome browser is slow as heck on it).

I'm not sure the S5 16gb version is worth abandoning my UDP for. But at some point in the next few months I'm going to upgrade. If Best Buy can come up with a comparable deal, then I'll go with it. Right now, the LG G2 for free is really a better deal when you keep the UDP.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

"1) In the top left corner of the phone, does it say 'Verizon', or just have the signal and Wifi indicator; and 2) if you go to 'Settings'-->'General'-->'About', what does it say next to 'Network'? If it doesn't say Verizon in the corner, and it says the network is Unavailable, you just need to get a new sim card from Verizon"

"The 5S came with a SIM card installed, right? I would still call them up, or maybe call the store, and ask them to activate a new SIM for you on the iPhone. Just tell them that you stopped by a store, but didn't have time for them to go through the entire process, but they gave you a replacement SIM.
Alternatively, try putting it back into the old device and have that active on the line."

The above is what was going on.... my phone number was not showing under settings... phone, hence could not activate imessages and txt was not working properly.

Spent 3 hours with apple support, wiping phone clean and reinstalling, but did not help.

Put original sim that came with phone, and got verizon tech support to fix the issue..

Thx to all of u for your valubale suggestions.

Took alot of time and effort, patience, but don't give up it can be done.

Thx Again !!!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

EDIT: Nevermind. Best Buy just tweaked the webpage to force you through the Eligibility screen before allowing the "Keep Current Plan" button to appear.

Intrigued by this Best Buy trick.

I was just going to drop my wife's plan to a non-unlimited and upgrade piecemeal, but the chance to save 200-250 on a BOGO S5 is probably going to push me over the edge and just suck it up. (I used 8+ this month, mostly because a ruthlessly stream audiobooks while commuting)

Anyone do the upgrade one line at a time thing on a non-data line? Is it easy enough to move the phone and drop that line back down to a non $30 monthly charge or do you get hit with stupid fees and prorations all over the place?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Did anyone else notice this in the Agreement?

Looks like all the tricks are coming to a close.... I tried to upgrade on Verizon.com and they force you to change your data plan... : (

Also hearing they changed it on the Best Buy thread as well. Oh well.

Are you saying you couldn't pass you upgrade to a dumb phone? or another phone on your plan?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

FYI, I just did this TWICE...niether time did it change my unlimited data plan but the 2nd time it reset my contract expiration to 2016.

I am a bit irritated that I'm now in contract again for 2 years, but then again I have no intention of leaving verizon unlimited at all and I got TWO subsidized pricing phones for it (sold both, iPhone 5s 32gb $730 and selling the other one; Note 3 for likely around $600) so more than enough to pay for the gs5 in a few days and gets me more than half way to covering an etf too if I ever decide to ditch Verizon.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Im a noob to this so i hope someone can help me out.

Line 1: Unlimited data for droid razr
Line 2: Unlimited data for droid razr
Line 3: 2gb data for iphone 4
Line 4: basic phone

All lines due for an upgrade

What would be the best/cheapest strategy for me to get the S5 for the unlimited data plans.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi everyone -
I'm working to try to upgrade to the S5 by transferring my upgrade from my UDP to my dumb phone line. It looks like I can go through with it, but there is one issue I have. The line that I was going to upgrade (non-UDP) does not currently have data. Big Red is telling me that in order to use the upgrade, I have to re-commit for two years on this second line. I'm fine with doing that, except that they're saying that I now have to pay for data on the second line for two years (i.e. I can't just remove the data once I go to activate the S5 on my UDP line). Is this normal? Are there ways around it?

Thanks!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

Hey guys, that is great news.... I have an upgrade on the 14th so I can not transfer yet. I was just playing around and got this warning. Maybe because I was on Add a line (I do have 5 already, so maybe that is why...LOL).

The more I think about it it is probably because I had to use add a line... sorry for the panic... CARRY ON :-)

Once you reactivate the dumb line, the data plan should fall off...if not, a call to customer service would take care of it

Upgrade lines 3 and 4, since they are eligible for upgrade you don't even have to first activate the S5 on those lines before swapping Sims from the unlimited lines

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I think the thing everyone is missing here is when you transfer the upgrade from your unlimited data to a "dumb phone" line (no data) you then have to agree to a 2-year contract. There is no way to get out of that 2-year contract without paying the early termination fee and now you are stuck with a line you had no intension of keeping data on and now your are paying 40 bucks a month for the next two years.

Am I missing something here? I'm not seeing were my unlimited line is the one getting the new 2-year contract (which I'm fine with as long as I keep my unlimited), it puts it on the "dumb phone" line.

I did read on droid-life that once you receive the phone in the mail you then call Verizon and have them remove the 30 dollar data plan and revert it back to the 9.99 dumb phone. This makes me a little weary that they would not do this without charging you the early termination fee. Not sure I would want to take the chance.

They have always done it in the past.... It will work now unless something changed

Agreed, but it does depend on the plan. Looking at my bill, I pay $9.99 on all phones for "line access" and $29.99 for data.

So as long as you have a phone that qualifies for a "pay as you go" data plan,i.e. a dumb one, you're fine. you're not cancelling anything you're simply switching which allotted data plan you use.

I wouldn't be surprised if they told you/me that you're getting charged the whole month for it though.
