[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

I don't see why you can't just swap sim cards to the new phone. Also, do you have to send the old one back?

There is no reason that I can see for them to call Verizon....

That's what I was thinking. And yes the other phone has to go back.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

thank you so much for the detailed response, this is exactly what i was looking for. i just went through the motions on best buys site and it will let me keep my existing plan.
however, do you (or anyone) know if there are any adverse effects with keeping the old sim? I had read somewhere back in the thread that someone couldnt update their phone with the old sim? and if i just go with the new sim, i should still be keeping UDP?
thanks again

The only issue using the old SIMs I see cropping up in the future would be in a situation where you needed remote Verizon Customer Service assistance with your phone while you were out of town on vacation or business. They would look at the SIM [that came with the phone] and see that it's not being used maybe. My gf had dealt with something similar to this once at her job where she handles all the work cellphone lines. I believe her boss bought a new phone, but switched the SIM cards between the new and old, so that when the old phone was eventually traded to someone who traveled, and her boss had an issue, Verizon looked up his phone and thought it was in Tennessee. I think if that happened with one of us, it might make them suspicious and try to change the data plan. So it's better to avoid calling Verizon for anything.

I wouldn't try the new SIM card without first booting up the new phone with the old SIM card. There have been occasions where people who used the new SIM card first immediately lost the UDP.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I have a few questions/scenarios that I haven't read throughout this entire tread. Here are my scenarios:
My wife and I have UDP, her line is the only upgradable line and I would like to use her line to get a HTC M8 for my line. Once the phone comes in the mail do I have to activate it on her line first (using her current "trimmed" sim card from her S3) or can I trim down my Samsung S3 sim card and use the phone on my line immediately? With that said, what is this 35 dollar activation fee (assuming it's the agreement to enter another 2 year contract on my wife's line) and what if I do the above scenario and not activate the new phone on her line? Would there be some breach in the contract and would they expect the phone to be sent back or else pay the full amount for the phone? Basically, what are or could be the repercussions of not activating the phone on her line since it was the line I used to buy the phone?

I suppose another scenario would be to trim her card, activate on her line, then get her a new sim card to fit her S3 then reactivate it, then trim my sim card from my S3 then activate the M8 on my line.

Some pretty heavy scenarios here I know but I like to think everything through thoroughly and you guys on here seem to be a ton of help to others so now it's my turn to find some help. Really appreciate any advice you could give! THX

Also to those that have ordered the M8, have you received it and have you activated it. What was your outcome? Successful?...

Mine should be arriving today if I'm home for them to deliver it. Which is 50/50 as it's looking now, I hope it gets here soon. Otherwise tomorrow will be the day.

If you activate on her line first, and then change the device to your line, I imagine that it would be effectively the same situation as getting a phone from eBay and activating it to your line. which shouldn't, IIRC, ruin the UDP. Can someone else clarify?

Basically I think: "I suppose another scenario would be to trim her card, activate on her line, then get her a new sim card to fit her S3 then reactivate it, then trim my sim card from my S3 then activate the M8 on my line," is the best option. You can get a replacement SIM from a Verizon store I believe.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm trying to keep my unlimited data, but also want to upgrade a dumb line to a data plan... Is this possible using the BOGO for the S5?

Line1: Galaxy S3, Unlimited data
Line2: Dumbphone

Both are eligible for an upgrade... Can i buy the S5 with bogo on line 2, activate one of the phones on that line, transfer the unilimited sim card to that line, and then activate the other?

Thanks in advance!!

So why would I even need to activate it on her line then? I could simply use it immediately on my line it would seem. My main concern is would I be breaching some hidden agreement (I say hidden cuz the damn term of service agreement is so long) if I do not activate it on her line?

I wouldn't think so. to BOGO you have to upgrade both lines.

I ordered my upgrades on dumb lines both, as I understand it I shouldn't have to worry about cutting SIM cards right? I've already switched one line to a S1, back to an S3, and to an S1 again without having to lose unlimited data, so why wouldn't activating a new S5 be the same?

I've seen some people say you can just do it this way. Don't see why not. I don't think they can change the data plan on you without you selecting one (i.e. 2gb, 4 gb, etc) so there should always be a way to back out right?

Also to your point, my line isn't the one with the new 2-year contract anyways so it should be untouchable.

Right, to change the data plan is to change the contract, and that requires your consent. Your allowed to activate any phone you want on the line.

The only driving issue here is if somehow you violate the upgrade terms by never activating it on the line you signed the new contract on. And if so, do you have to activate it and wait a day, or can you activate it, re-activate the other phone, and then activate the S5 on yours?

Yes exactly. This is my main concern here. But who's to say that when you get the phone you decide you don't like it and give it to say, my line. I guess that scenario doesn't really matter. It's all about what's in the policy.

I guess my second scenario would be another viable route. (and what you said above): trim her card, activate on her line, then get her a new sim card to fit her S3 then reactivate it, then trim my sim card from my S3 then activate the M8 on my line.

I prefer the first scenario by far. Much easier to do. Just wish someone was out there that has a very similar situation that they have already gone through.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm not understanding how people that are using a dumb line to upgrade to a smartphone and are switching back that line to a dumb phone after receiving the phone. You have to agree to a 2-year contract and you have 14 days to cancel that contract but they require you send all equipment back. Says right here in their contract that you agreed to:

If you do accept (their 2-year contract), you can cancel a line of Service within 14 days of accepting this Agreement without having to pay an early termination fee as long as you return, within the applicable return period, any equipment you purchased from us or one of our authorized agents at a discount in connection with your acceptance of this Agreement, but you'll still have to pay for your Service through that date.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The contract is for the phone line. Not for data. Data can be dropped without affecting the contract commitment. This converts the one back to a $10 a month dumb phone line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

That is interesting! Well I went ahead and just purchased the M8 thru Best Buy for 150. Everything says "Keep existing plan" and "keep existing Data plan". Hope everything works out. It's all on paper!

Guess I'll be trimming my sim card. Now my biggest worry has shifted to someone being home for the delivery! If no one is you think Best Buy will let me just take it if I tell them I don't have time to have them activate? I"M IN A HURRY MAN I GOTTA GO!

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Well they just want to be careful, I assume. It's like them saying, wait 24 hours for your phone to completely activate or the number to port, etc. Some are also probably still stuck in the past where you had to call up Verizon to switch devices versus swapping SIMs.

Have you tried to go into Best Buy to see if they would be willing to just swap out the phone? That would be probably be the best option. You could try to get the upgrade back but I wouldn't trust them to do that =\

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Does anyone know when I can go to my Verizon and check to see when the contact extension will show? Ordered a phone today and checked to see if it showed the contract extension but it still has this year. thx

EDIT: Just checked my account and it shows a new contract date thru 2016 with unlimited still showing.

Yes data will fall off when you re-activate the basic phone. In regards to the Buy One Get one free deal you'd have to check on the details but generally if you exercise that deal you get another free but the free one has to be activated on a line. So use the deal to get the first phone on line 2 and then you should get another free to put on line 3. You will then be tied into 2 yr contracts on line 2 and 3.

I have heard from a couple different Verizon reps both in store and via customer service that you need 2 upgrades available in order to take advantage of the GS5 BOGO deal. Are they wrong? Just wanted to confirm.

Yes, that is possible, it just depends on the terms of the BOGO deal they are offering, some are more stricter than others. Then it seems like your original plan is correct, transfer your upgrade from line 1 to line 3. Get two new phones for line 2 & 3 using BOGO. Then take the two new smartphones off lines 2 & 3 and put the basic phones back on those lines. Take one of the now free smartphones on your unlimited data line 1 and sell the other one.

If you want to buy full retail, use the iconic portal.

Thanks, that is a good resource to bookmark and save. Luckily I've never had to buy full retail yet to keep unlimited data. Have just been transferring data. I think if it ends up coming to having to pay full retail to keep unlimited I'd take a long hard look at switching to T-Mobile before doing that. Hopefully their data network continues to expand and fill in.
