Last time I did this, I used the old:
Activate on dumb phone line, then reactivate dumb phone back on that line, then activate new smart phone on unlimited plan line.
Now I'm reading all the posts that say I should do it a different way with the sim card instead. Here's where I'm at: I went and bought the phone using dumb phone line. (all lines below are dumb phones except the first one, which is my unlimited data plan Samsung Galaxy S3) Haven't activated it yet:

Do I activate on "pending line", then reactivate old phone on pending line, and activate new phone (S5) on unlimited line...
Or do I just put sim card from unlimited line (it's an S3, not the HTC One pictured) in the S5?
Ok so I have phone 1 with unlimited and two other smart phones on my plan. The Unlimited is the only one avaliable to upgrade. So just transfer it to another line via Verizon's website and when I get the phone just put my sim card in it?

Update:
Everything appears to have worked perfectly. UDP is intact and the activation pending has been dropped automatically from the Line that was used for the upgrade. Thanks all for the help.
What I did:
Line 1 UDP (no upgrade)
Line 2 2GB plan (upgrade was available)
Purchased a new phone using the upgrade on Line 2. After the purchasing the upgrade, when going to 'My Verizon' it showed that an activation for a new device was pending on the Line 2 phone just as you would expect. The new phone arrived. Turned off my Line 1 phone with the UDP plan. Removed the SIM from my old line 1 phone and placed it into the new upgraded phone. Powered it on and the first message was 'this SIM is already activated, the mobile number xxx-xxxx will be used'. Proceeded through the new phone setup (adding gmail, etc) and when done everything is working as planned.
Now when I logon to 'My Verizon' it shows the new device (LG G2) on the Line 1 number with UDP. It still shows that I have my UDP intact. The contract date on Line 2 now reflects a date 2 years from now as expected. The phone on Line 2 no longer shows the 'activation pending'. Everything looks good.
Now, all that is left is when Line 1 reaches it's upgrade date, I can transfer the upgrade to Line 2 and then purchase a new phone for line 2.
Thanks everybody.
Oh yeah, I want to point out that this was all done without contacting Verizon at all. Not once did I have to contact Verizon via phone or chat.
That's great. How long did it take for the "activation pending" to fall off your Line 2? From some other recent posts it sounds like it doesn't take a week for it to fall off anymore.
Ok Ladies and Gents... so I've been lurking and wanted to give my senario. On 6/18 I ordered and s3 from best buy. I have two phones on UDP.
I ordered for the sencondary line, not the primary line. This line has been eligible for upgrade since april and was on a month to month. I came across this forum and followed the instuctions for ordering. I was super pumped, but within a half hour I got the dreaded problem email. I wasn't about to call so I decieded to wait 48hrs and have it cancel out, which it didn't. So then I tried to cancel through my best buy online account, couldn't do that either. So the only option I had was to call best buy. The first person I talked to verified my last 4 and all that info, so I was good to go. Then I was passed on to someone else who deals directly with verizon. I was put on hold for I short while and when they came back on the line I was told the s3 pebble blue was no longer availble on line and I would need to go to the store to pick it up. no no no! I was not about to do that! And have someone screw me outta my UDP! I politly cancelled my order.
I don't give up eaisly, so I turned around and reordered another, and s3 white one this time. The first go around I had $5 owed on my past bill so I paid that off before I tried a seconded time. I have no idea if this was the cause or not. Also I never did create a billing password. I kept my fingers crossed and hoped for the best. Well it worked cause in the morning I had a your order has shipped email! Sweet! This was on the 22nd and I just received my phone today!
So I took the old sim card outta the old razr maxx and into the s3 and fired that puppy up! shot gun cold booya! effen A esse it worked! Hot diggy dog still rock that delisicious UDP per myverizon web site, thanks to all you fine people here andoridcentral.
Atleast I've prolonged my UDP for another 2yrs, Now to upgrade my primary line. I post back with any updates. Good Luck and my your UDP stay with you!
I read through the entire thread and I have only one question. Has the process been the same and problem free for those with a secondary UDP line upgrading through BB? There are a few posts that talk about this but I just want to get the steps straight for the secondary lines.
And a thanks to those who posted the step by step screenshots of BB some many pages back.
I have a problem. I ordered a Galaxy S5 and its faulty.
Anytime someone calls me they hear an echo of themselves on their end. If i use my bluetooth headset or car bluetooth , no echo. So i assume its faulty hardware in the phone.
So do i contact verizon or bestbuy about this? Will they take away my unlimited data? Should I just send the phone back and request a refund? Then order another?
This message has been appearing for some people. There was talk about it pages back somewhere but people still went ahead."There's a change from Verizon Wireless for unlimited data plans.
Verizon Wireless has ended this plan option, so when you upgrade you'll be switched to their most common 2GB plan by default."
So does this mean that I missed out on being able to do this?
I'm still trying to figure out why the Best Buy system won't let me through during the account verification...

Not trying to be mean, but that wasn't much of an upgrade. They're fazing those out and they've been having a lot of issues.

From my understanding it only works with the primary line.

Thanks. I'm just a little bit hesitant on that method because of the "pending" status on the dumb line. I scoured through as many of these posts as I can, and I don't see anybody confirming that it automatically drops. Have you seen confirmation?
