[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Hi All - I've looked around on this thread, not sure if I missed it, but don't think I got an answer to the following questions about upgrading at Best Buy:

Line 1 (Primary) - UDP Upgrade Avail
Line 2 Dumb - Upgrade Avail

I have a giftcard from Best Buy that I want to use. I wanted to get the LG G3 and have to pickup from the store.

After upgrading the dumb line, adding a data plan, and activating the phone in the store, how long should you wait to deactivate the data plan? Do you re-activate the dumb phone first and then drop data? Does the data automatically drop after re-activating the dumb phone? How do you go about dropping the data?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

I'd like to use this trick to upgrade my S3 to an LG G3, but bestbuy.com says it's only available for in-store pickup. Has anyone tried this? Would they let you just pick it up and leave without activating it in the store?

Thanks!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

you guys are fantastic.... I need more help!! (geez, I feel so stupid lately. I would have thought I could have figured this out, I don't know why I'm having so much trouble)

anyway, I got my SIM card that Verizon sent me, since my iphone4S card isn't a 4LTE that I need for the Samsung Galaxy 5.
I put it in, started up the phone, it said to wait while it activated...................and..............nothing. it hasn't done a thing, AND my iphone is still activated. NOW WHAT????

DON'T CALL VERIZON.

1) completely power off iPhone (press power button until "slide to power off" appears , then slide to power it off.

2) Make sure new phone with SIM is powered off - record the IMEI (also called device ID of new phone) and the SIM ID (may be called the ICCID also) of the SIM you got directly from Verizon....NOT THE SIM THAT CAME WITH THE PHONE

3) Make sure SIM (that you got from VZW) is installed in new phone...and it is still off

4) Go to VZW.com and select switch/activate device

5) Enter the IMEI and ICCID for the new phone on the phone number for the old phone

6) After you have hit OK or CONFIRM to accept the change of the IMEI and ICCID wait a few minutes.

7) Power on new phone with that SIM you got directly from Verizon (NOT THE SIM THAT CAME WITH THE PHONE).

8) Make a phone call to someone you know on the new phone to confirm it now works

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

How have Apple users with the unlimited data plan handled this? My gf has a 4s with udp and wants to upgrade and keep her plan. As per the Best Buy website, none of the 5s phones are shippable and only a handful of 5c phones, typically with 8 or 16 Gb, are shippable. How are folks with one line getting new 5s or large 5c phones and retaining the udp?

When you reactivate the dumb phone it'll automatically fall off

If you have a old verizon lte phone laying around you can request a lte sim from verizon to be used for that phone with the line that currently has the 4s. Or buy a cheap old lte phone from eBay or swappa and request a sim.

After they activate it when you get home then make a test call and then you can go online to reactivate the basic phone and the data should fall off but mostly you will need to call in and tell them you want to reactivate the basic phone (make up and excuse if needed ) then your new phone will be free to use elsewhere.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

So if I am understanding, I can't use the sim card from the 4s in a 5c/5s, so I need to come up with a newer sim card from a more recent phone that supports 4G service, transfer the 4s to that phone, then start the upgrade process to a new 5c or 5s?

If so, then how can I get to that point if Best Buy will not ship 5s and high memory 5c phones?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hey guys,

Apologies if this has been answered before, but just want to make sure.

My friend said he followed this method, did the upgrade on his UDP line with BB, got the phone, used his old SIM and his contract is renewed and UDP still there after a month. Is this the method I should do, or what people are recommending? Sorta having your cake and eating it too?

I'd just like to extend my UDP plan before Oct 1, as you all know. :)

Pic a different phone. Or order through Verizon. There's other threads just read through the process and see what works best for you.

Have you done this sim activation online with success? I'm just curious since no one has actually mentioned here that they had success activating it online.

Yes, activated "old" SIM through the "switch device/ activate" screen at VZW.com. To be clear, my old SIM was active in my old device.

I might be wrong but the SIM online activation problems seem to be on newly ordered SIMs from VZW, yes? So my SIM is already active.

Yes, the sim the Verizon sends needs to be activated, but in your case you just did device activation. what was the need to do that? Normally just sticking the old sim in the new device just works.

You don't have to wait. When you get home just activate the dumb phone back on Line 2 and the data plan will drop off automatically because the dumb phone doesn't have data. Some people have reported though that when they activated the dumb phone back on the line bumping the new G3 off the line the SIM is still attached to Line 2. Perhaps because putting the basic phone knocks the phone off the Line 2 phone line it leaves that data portion associated with Line 2. So you may have difficulty using that SIM to activate on your Line 1 UDP line. You can either call Verizon and ask them to release Line 2 data from the SIM or you can take your existing SIM from the old Line 1 phone and put it in the new G3 and not use the SIM that came with the G3.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Yes, the sim the Verizon sends needs to be activated, but in your case you just did device activation. what was the need to do that? Normally just sticking the old sim in the new device just works.

I previously had an iPhone4 (3g device/ no available SIM) and needed to activate the SIM to get my 1st 4g phone active on the acct before I later used the BB method to get a new 4g device. I guess that could be a confusing situation.

So I had a 3+ year old iPhone4 and was on a month-to-month agreement with VZW for my UDP plan.

My goal was to get a new 4G phone at the subsidized price and keep my UDP. So I borrowed a friends old 4G phone to replace my iPhone. And VZW sent me my 1st 4G SIM for that borrowed phone...that's when I had to activate the SIM online in that 8 step process.

I used the borrowed 4G phone for a few weeks and ordered a new 4G device from BB using their upgrade process which extended a 2-yr contract on my UDP.

When the new 4G device arrived I swapped the working SIM for the new SIM and simply made a call to a friend to confirm the new 4G phone was working with the old SIM.
