Looks like it's over. :-(

Verizon closing the transfer upgrade loophole?

P3droid mentioned on his Twitter account that Verizon is closing the transfer upgrade loophole today.

He has had some good information on the past but I don't know how reliable this is.

I bite the bullet and order a G3. I was going to wait for the Note 4. I will probably sell my note 3 and the g3 and pay full price for the Note 4.

Over on Howard forums they state that they are closing the ability to drop data off a line when it was upgraded to a smartphone.

If that is true then I can probably cancel my order.

Re: Verizon closing the transfer upgrade loophole?

Well, I'm transferring my upgrade to my wife, who has 6gb data on the loyalty max plan. How much does she use? About .5 gb per month, anyway. So? I transfer my upgrade to her and get the Note 4 on her line. I activate it on her line for a day or two and then transfer the phone to my line keeping unlimited.

Re: Verizon closing the transfer upgrade loophole?

I wonder if I can transfer an upgrade from my UDP line and get a new dumb phone to extend my contract?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have been sifting through all of the information about keeping my UDP plan and I understand how to do the upgrade. I am a little confused about which way I should proceed though. We have 2 phones 1 UDP - available for upgrade and 1 smartphone not eligible. My husband gave me his upgrade at Christmas and he just upgraded from a dump phone to a smart phone. They would not let him get a new phone since it showed that he is not eligible since he gave me his upgrade earlier in the year. Now he needs a phone. Would it be better to do an alternate upgrade on my phone and transfer it to him. If we do that can he just use the sim card that comes with it??? OR I could order a new phone on my account through Best Buy and put my old sim card in it. I do not want to lose my UDP plan. Why way do you think is the safest or best way??? Thank you in advance for your help.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

After reading this thread (and two others), I feel a lot more comfortable taking the jump. Had my eyes on the Samsung S5 for quite some time; upgrading from my old Motorola Droid Razr. Single line with UDP. Ordered and having it delivered to my house. As what the threads have said (and correct me if I got it wrong); just simply remove the included SIM before I turn the device on. Replace it with my SIM card. Turn on/activate. Knocking on wood I got this figured out right, and this works. I absolutely will hate to lose my UDP, even though I'm not a huge or heavy user; just like having that safety factor in my plan if I do use more data than usual.

Stole this from WinDroidGuy on slickdeals.net. uploadfromtaptalk1407646343234.jpg

Looks like it closes the ability to add a line, get a smartphone and then drop the data on the new line. They transfer unlimited data upgrade loophole might still be alive.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was planning to transfer my upgrade over from my UDP line to a 2gb line, and order the G3 through the Verizon site. If I just get the phone and pop in the sim card from my UDP line into the G3, will the insurance I have transfer right over too?

I didn't know if the system would have it stuck on my current phone and if that could pose problems in the future.

Any help from people that had insurance and did this would be great. Thanks in advance!

The insurance is good to go through Verizon. It will cover whatever you have in that line. I upgraded a dumb line and got a note 3. Put it in my uld line. Cracked the screen. Got a replacement no problem.

In my situation, I have 5 lines of service with 2 smartphones including one with unlimited data and one with the legacy $20 data plan. I also have 3 dumb phones. Can I transfer upgrades from the unlimited and dumb phones to the $20 data plan line, and keep unlimited data and no data on my 3 dumb phone lines?

On an administrative Note, I merged the two threads and clarified the title

Ok thanks. I thought I had read that sometimes the online system would still show the old phone on the line, so that when you bring it into the store the rep would say you don't have insurance on that phone. Maybe that was a rare case.

Re: Verizon to close the upgrade to smartphone then downgrade to basic phone loophole

Does anyone know when this will start happening?

I knew this day would come... Especially with the throttle thing around the corner.

You don't need to buy from best buy if you have 4 tiered data lines and only 1 UDP line. You can, but you can buy directly from verizon online too, which I think is easier. But if best buy has the best price, then you can buy from them.

All you need to do is transfer your UDP line's upgrade to one of the tiered data lines that is not yet eligible for an upgrade. You cannot transfer your UDP line's upgrade to a tiered data line if it has an upgrade available currently.

Once you have done the transfer, purchase the S5 on the tiered data line. When you receive it, activate the S5 on the tiered data line first. Then put whatever phone was on the tiered data line back on it and put the SIM card from your S4 into the S5. If they are different sized SIM cards, then you have to get a new SIM card from Verizon (which is no big deal).
