Sounds like the LG G3 that I was hoping to upgrade to takes a smaller sim card than my current S4, if so I wouldn't be able to upgrade and just drop my current phone's sim in. Can anyone confirm this, and if so let me know what the easiest method of getting a new sim would be?

If I'm upgrading from the Verizon site, (transferring my UDP upgrade to a tiered line) can I just activate the sim card that comes with the phone and not lose unlimited?

(the tiered line has an iPhone on it, so activating it on that line first could be an issue)

Hoping to pull the trigger on an upgrade later today (before Verizon closes the loophole) so any help would be great.

Looks like it closes the ability to add a line, get a smartphone and then drop the data on the new line. They transfer unlimited data upgrade loophole might still be alive.

I don't think they need to close the transfer upgrade loophole. You will continue to pay $30 for unlimited data plan. You also need to pay $30 for 2GB data on the newly upgraded line for 24 months.(even if a dumbphone is put back on that line)

Right after posting I saw the same thing there so I should be ok. Friend of mine was pretty confident the G3 took a nanosim which is what threw me off.

yes, that is what it is looking like. So if you have a family plan with even one tiered data line, it won't impact you because you can just use the tiered data line to transfer the UDP lines' upgrades to. It will only impact those of us who were using a basic line to transfer the UDP lines' upgrades to.

In my situation, I have 5 lines of service with 2 smartphones including one with unlimited data and one with the legacy $20 data plan. I also have 3 dumb phones. Can I transfer upgrades from the unlimited and dumb phones to the $20 data plan line, and keep unlimited data and no data on my 3 dumb phone lines?

It looks like it. They are just stopping you from dropping data after you get a subsidized smartphone on a line.

the easiest way is to call and say you have a new LG G3 you want to put on your line and it requires a different size SIM card than the current phone on the line and ask them to mail you one. If they tell you that you can go to a corporate store and get one there tell them ain't nobody got time for dat and so you would like it mailed to you.

Some people say you can, others say you can't. It's not worth risking it IMO since Verizon is obviously on a mission to exterminate every single last UDP. It is no big deal at all to get a new SIM card from Verizon. IMO the best route is to activate the phone first on the tiered data plan line then get a new SIM card for the UDP line if the phones have incompatible size SIM cards. You can of course cut a SIM card down but why anyone would do that when Verizon will give you a brand new one for free no hassles if you call them, idk.

no, it won't be. What is an issue some times is if the new subsidized phone is an iPhone or putting an iPhone back onto the tiered data line. Or if the tiered data line has a 3G phone on it; sometimes that causes issues.

It won't be an issue if you are transferring the UDP upgrade to a tiered data line. The loophole that Verizon is closing is transferring the UDP upgrade to a basic line and dropping the data plan on the basic line when you switch the new subsidized smartphone to the UDP line.

correct, you will not lose your UDP if you get a new SIM from Verizon for your gnex and then another for your M8 once it is repaired.

We need someone to try this to know. I always activated on the basic line first since I bought in-store at best buy with the $50 reserve gift card and they do the activation for you. I am hoping that you can't be charged for a smartphone data package until you actually put a smartphone on the line.

$30 x 24 moths = $720. That's about the same as buying a smartphone at full retail from Verizon. (S5 or Note 3 is about $799?) Althought, for the $720, you do get 24 months of 2GB data service.... so it's not that bad.

I want to burn my only available upgrade before 8/24... but not sure which phone to get.

I don't think they will make you get 2 contracts for transferring an upgrade. You will probably just have to keep data on the line getting the contract. We won't know for sure for awhile.

I didn't even think of that. Let's say I have two lines. Line #1 is unlimited data with upgrade available.
Line #2 is basic phone with no upgrade yet. I transfer the upgrade from Line #1 to Line #2. The new
two-year contract day will be reflected on Line #1. Line #2 will continue to have its original contract
expiration date.

My guess is that Verizon will change that so that when you transfer the upgrade to Line #2 and use it, it will extend Line #2's contract date, not Line #1's contract date.

In fact, that would be the only way they could enforce this - by extending Line #2's contract by 2 years and requiring the data plan stay on Line #2.

That would prevent you from extending your UDP line's contract date also, so it would be in line with Verizon's throttling policy b/c your UDP line would now be off contract and subject to throttling.

no, if you upgrade today, it would be extended thru 8/9/2016 since you only need to keep the data plan on for 2 years from the date you purchased the subsidized phone. Your UDP line would remain off contract.

edited - after thinking about this some more, I don't know what to think. Hopefully someone will try transferring a subsidized upgrade after 8/24/14 and let us know.

In all likelihood, I will be using the Best Buy Method or the FlyingArrow Method when it comes time for me to upgrade and letting my basic line run off contract and then eliminating it. I was comfortable with the transferring upgrade method b/c it had been proven to work but it looks like the Best Buy Method has been proven to work, too. Hope they don't take that from us, too.

So you did transfer upgrade from UDP line to tired days. And you still have your upgrade?

I had upgrades available on both lines, so no need to transfer.

If you used an upgrade that originated with a basic line on the basic line, there is no danger of losing your UDP if you switch the new device over to your UDP line and drop the data plan off of the basic line.

However, starting August 24th or 25th, you won't be able to drop the data plan off of the basic line for 2 years once you use the basic line's upgrade to purchase a subsidized smartphone.

This makes me wonder if somehow they would try to stop people from transferring upgrades from a UDP line to a 2gb tiered line and keeping unlimited data (even if I switch the phone back) while they are at it. Hopefully that's not the case though.

Makes me wonder if I should just jump and upgrade my S4 get the G3 (since it looks like there's a chance of the bootloader being unlocked) before the 24th just to be safe. Who knows if there are other loopholes they may try to close. I'd really like to hold off for a flagship phone that comes with Android L if possible.
