[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

So I tried the Best Buy method with a secondary line with UDP and got the dreaded "problem with your order" email. I stupidly called and gave them my info. The best buy operator told me that she had contacted verizon and that order will be processed. I later tried to cancel the order, but the best buy told me it was too late and to just return the phone in-store. I've been checking my verizon account online and my UDP is still intact. There is no pending order on the secondary line. My contract date is still month-to-month, but the upgrade date is extended two years out. Should I still return the phone when it gets here or can I use my old SIM card in the new phone?

Re: Verizon How to Both Get a Subsidized Phone and Keep Unlimited Data after 8/24/14

After reading through a couple of these threads, I've decided to *attempt* to keep my UDP through one last 2-yr contract. I ordered the LG G3 using an upgrade that was available on another line within my plan. This line already has a 2GB data plan so I'm not concerned about removing the data plan at any point.

I currently use an HTC 8X which has the correct sized SIM card. It sounds like I can do one of the following:

(1) Put my 8X's SIM card in the G3 and activate the phone directly on my line, but leave the 2GB line with a "pending activation" for some time; or
(2) Activate the G3 on the 2GB line, then deactivate the G3 on that line and reactivate it on my line.

I'll probably go with option #2 just to be safe. I read in here that as long as I activate the G3 on the upgraded 2GB line first, there's no need to remove the SIM card in the G3 and replace it with my 8X's SIM card when I'm reactivating it on my line.

Is it safer to just use the SIM card from my 8X anyways? Is there any disadvantage to using the 8X SIM card versus the one that comes with the G3?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just transfer my UDP line to basic and used the swap to the upgrade to my UDP four days ago. My unlimited data is still shown after I did this. I have another UDP that is due for an upgrade. Can I transfer the upgrade once again to the basic line and do the same even though I transfer an upgrade four days ago?

Re: 4 UDPs on Family Plan in different parts of the country

I realize this is a Verizon thread, and I hope it's alright to ask (seems like a helpful crowd), does this work for AT&T? It's probably already posted but I can't find it. If someone could point me in the right direction/provide guidance I would appreciate it.

Re: Verizon How to Both Get a Subsidized Phone and Keep Unlimited Data after 8/24/14

Has anyone tried the BestBuy method recently and had success with keeping their UDP? My account is a single line UDP, now going on month to month since July and I'd like to try to upgrade using the BestBuy method. Just want to know if this is still working as of right now, because id like to try and do this sooner rather than later. Thanks!

What are you trying to do? Avoid the upgrade fee?

I'm in a four-person family plan and I'd like to upgrade my phone using the 2-yr contract extension. Unfortunately if any of the phones in the plan are upgraded we lose our current plan. The cost difference is hundreds more per year (in any of the scenarios - Next, 2-yr agreement, BYOD). Even though the other family members aren't ready, if I upgrade it impacts them too. After reading this thread I was hoping to use my current SIM in a new device and not get bumped out of our current plan. Any advice or alternatives?

Yes once the pending activation on the basic line falls off. If you don't see it there when you look online then it's already fallen off.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Just pulled the trigger on the best buy method today after reading another thread on here on how to do it (it has since mysteriously disappeared...) I however have not gotten an email stating there was a problem with my order, YET, today is Sunday....I guess I will keep you guys posted on how it goes...

Edit* I was only able to order the copper/gold S5, the other 2 were in store pick up only....kind of weird

Just did the BB method today, will keep you posted...

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You can do either. If you just put uour sim into it all you will be waiting for is the pending activation to fall off. It can be automatically or can take up to a week. If you activate it on the basic line first you won't have to worry about that.

If I activate on the basic line first, what do I say when I can Verizon to move to my line?

Just tell them you are giving the phone as a birthday present to someone

You don't have to talk to them or say anything. Just logon to your account on the website, activate your old basic phone back on the line. It will revert (at least until 8/24) to a no data basic service. Then activate your new smartphone on the UDP line. The less you talk to a human the better.

This is true while you are doing the trick:loophole to upgrade but there is no issue calling to switch phones. I've done it twice last week to upgrade my basic and also with a transfer upgrade to basic.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

REALLY want to wait for the announcement for Motorola/Samsung this September before I upgrade but this new policy (assuming it's legit) is making me antsy to maybe do it before the 24th.... Does verizon provide micro sims or nano sims when you ask for one?

decisions decisions....

Re: Verizon How to Both Get a Subsidized Phone and Keep Unlimited Data after 8/24/14

Not sure if this was covered. I wonder if the best buy method might work for upgrading a dumbphone line without keeping data after the 24th. Since best buy does not implement the plan change until after the new SIM card is activated. If you just activate the phone on another line it might not implement the plan change.

You actually can use the SIM that comes with the phone if you order from Verizon. It's when doing the Best Buy method that you can't use the SIM.

Re: Verizon How to Both Get a Subsidized Phone and Keep Unlimited Data after 8/24/14

After searching around a little bit, I found that the Best Buy method was around at least in December of last year which is why I am wondering if anyone has had any luck using it recently and it hasn't been fixed by now (at least on Verizon's side). I did start the best buy method and the process still remains as outlined here in the instructions. Also, if it does still work and unless I am missing something, can anyone point out a reason this method couldn't still work after the 24th? It sounds like the outlined changes only really affect people moving/using an upgrade on another line on their plan which is a dumbphone line and then dropping the data plan.

Re: Verizon How to Both Get a Subsidized Phone and Keep Unlimited Data after 8/24/14

Keep in mind the Best Buy method benefits the store since it encourages certain people to buy their phones there, so it's not like they're in any hurry to change it, if they're even aware of it. Verizon would have to change something on their end, and they haven't said anything that would affect that existing method.

I too, wonder if BBUY could be used for upgrades on basic lines after the deadline, assuming you don't use the SIM card, but it seems like you may have problems.

With the existing Best Buy method, you do at least activate it on the line you purchased the upgrade for, you just do it without implementing any changes Verizon wants you to make to your plan.

After the 24th, if you never activate the phone on that line at all, they could show a problem with your order due to that line never seeing the phone. I don't doubt that the data plan won't go into effect if you don't activate it, yet what will they do when the pending activation falls off? Officially the policy states you have to keep the data plan if you upgrade a basic line, so if they stick you with the difference in price to full retail, your only option would be to call, and they would tell you to return the phone or let them add the plan.

I don't know, and again we'll have to see. I'd like to think it may work, but it seemed risky enough that I went ahead and burned both of my basic upgrades last night, so I'll still have a week to see if any workarounds still exist before my return window closes.
