[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I don't want to be off topic, but starting today AT&T is offering double the data for the same price. That means you can get 30gb of data for $130 and an extra $15 per line for each smartphone.

I'm actually tempted to drop my UDP for Verizon if they end up following suit to AT&T. 30GB is a lot considering everyone else only uses 2-3GB on their plans in my family share plan.

What do you guys think? 30GB of unthrottled LTE sound good? Plus my bill is currently $250 a month with 2 unlimited data plan smartphone, 1 4GB plan smartphone, and 2 dumbphones.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello! I'm new here and I've got a transfer upgrade question that maybe somebody here can help me clarify?! Here's my situation:

Line 1- TDP - Iphone 4 (hand me down phone from line 2) - upgrade available
Line 2- UDP - iphone 5 - no upgrade *Wants iPhone6.
Line 3 - TDP- iphone 5s - upgrade available
Line 4- TDP - iphone 5 s - no upgrade

Two years ago I got the Motorola Droid using Line 2 UDP upgrade. A few months later, I decided I hated the thing and used Line 1 upgrade to get the new iPhone5. I believe I then just activated the new iphone5 on Line 2 (UDP) online and gave my old iPhone 4 to my mom (line 1).
Now here comes the question: Since line 1's current phone was a hand me down from line 2 (UDP), is the UDP synced with THAT sim card? or is it with my iPhone5? I never swapped any sim cards when I activated the 5 on the UDP line, so that's what makes me wonder if the sim card with the UDP is attached to that iphone4 and if I steal Line 1's upgrade and insert the sim card from the UDP line if it will kill it off?

P.S. I think somebody (possibly line 3) took the Line 2 UDP upgrade to get the 5s.

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!!!!

I don't think there is any residual effect of where the original cards came from. From your current situation the simplest thing would be to get an iPhone 6 on one of your TDP lines which would extend their contact 2 years then swap the sim to put the iphone 6 on your UDP line.

Sounds good to me, that's what I plan to do! Thank you :)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm happy to report that I upgraded my unlimited data line with Apple, dumped the SIM that came with my 6+ and still have unlimited data by using my 5S's SIM.

So you got it directly from Apple? Did you do it online or at the Apple store? I would assume online as the store would have made you activate with the new SIM?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So in trying to follow along, there are 4 methods to keeping your unlimited data.

1. Use a dumb line for the upgrade, but now get stuck with paying for TDP with is slightly more than buying the phone outright.

2. Buy the phone outright.

3. Assuming your UDP line is not eligible for upgrade, you can transfer an upgrade from another line to the UDP line, which leaves the UDP contract untouched, and extends the other contract. (I might have this backwards, and therefore ends up similar to option 1)

4. Your UDP is eligible for upgrade, so order online, reuse old SIM before powering the phone.

Sound right?

#3 is backwards. Transfer upgrade from UDP line to TDP Line, or use and available upgrade to get the phone and then put it on the UDP line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi...tried to find the answer, but there are too many pages to go through. I purchased an unlocked GS 5 off of eBay that will work on Verizon. I have a GS 3, out of contract, with UDP. When I get the GS 5, can I just register that phone in place of my GS 3 with the new SIM installed, or should I first replace it with the old SIM from the GS3?

Thanks for any help. Great forum!

Bob

You should be fine using either sim since you bought the device off contract

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks for the reply. Is there any advantage to using the 'new' SIM card?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

They say you need the new sim card to use NFC, I have not been able to figure out if this is totally true or not.

dude you do know that AT&T throttles all of its customers that go over 5 gigs righT?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

as long as you got the phone off contract then yes you should be able to keep your unlimited data. I would recommend inserting the sim card into the s5 before turning on the phone as a precaution. Verizon clearly states that if you keep your unlimited data if you purchase a phone off contract

Theredherring,

Not totally true. If your current sim is nfc enabled then there is no benefit to using the new sim. In my case I cut down a standard sim so my S5 had no nfc but functioned properly otherwise. I have no idea if they even made micro sim cards that were not nfc compatible.

Not tiered data. Only unlimited gets throttled. This probably isn't the appropriate thread for this though so maybe we should discuss it somewhere else.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I just want to give everyone my experience when upgrading a phone on our family plan.

Line 1: UDP, iPhone 5 (upgrade not available)
Line 2: UDP, HTC Thunderbolt (upgrade available)

We went to the VZW rep. at a booth within a mall that was able to take care of us. He stated that Verizon is allowing people who were grandfathered into unlimited data to keep it, if they need it, and at some fee. It turned out that Line 1 and 2 both were using <4 GB per month, so they did not need to keep the UDP. With that being said, one of the lines would have to go to a tiered 6 GB plan, the max amount of data that the rep. is allowed to give, for the same price that we've been paying all along. Overall, it seemed like a solid deal since Line 1 user doesn't even use that amount of data, the price doesn't change, and it doesn't have to be shared at all.

Now the process...The upgrade from Line 2 was transferred to Line 1 where the user got a 64 GB iPhone 6. Now, Line 1 has a 6 GB data limit going to tiered because the phone was activated over her line with no SIM card switching or phone switching (besides the original phone switch). Line 2 now has her contract extended for two years (just checked the plan).

I am a little salty about losing the unlimited data for the user of Line 1, but they are always upgrading their phone, so it will work out in the long-run without having to do any back-end switching and making things complicated. Luckily, there are still 3 UDP phones on the family plan and 1 basic line totaling to 5 phones.

Hope that helps whomever is in the same situation. I forgot to continue the conversation and ask about what the fee was; I think I recall it being something like $50, which is a small price to pay for a subsidized price. Either way, ask your reps. about this if you're in the same boat.

Never heard of any such deal and if there is one why not get it? Sounds like they said you don't use enough data to get the deal? Doesn't really make sense. How much data do you have to use to get "the deal"?

Sounds like some slick sales line the salesman came up with to get people to give up their unlimited.

Or he is a slick sales guy LOL. I'm only 8 days into my cycle and at 19GB of use so far. No way I would just give it up or even talk to Verizon about it.
