[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Or he is a slick sales guy LOL. I'm only 8 days into my cycle and at 19GB of use so far. No way I would just give it up or even talk to Verizon about it.

If someone using 20 - 30GB of data comes to that salesperson I bet he wouldn't have that keep your unlimited deal available. Probably just uses that line on people with less than 6GB. But what happens when you start using more data? What happens when everyone using VOIP you may not use the data now but trend is that you will later. Think back to when a 40 MB hard drive was more than enough?

Yeah my wife has unlimited too and probably doesn't use 2 GB most months but I wouldn't let her change it.

Anyone in here still got the talk txt data promo with UDP? I have 3 lines eligible for upgrade but a bit hesitant and worried of losing the promo while trying to keep UDP.

I don't know what promo you are talking about, but if you are trying to change your talk and text plan I'm guessing that would change your data plan too.

Do you have to get a new phone to get the promo?

Theredherring,

Not totally true. If your current sim is nfc enabled then there is no benefit to using the new sim. In my case I cut down a standard sim so my S5 had no nfc but functioned properly otherwise. I have no idea if they even made micro sim cards that were not nfc compatible.

Yeah that is what I've been pretty much hearing, my chip i do not think have NFC. I do not really care that much about NFC anyways especially if its nfc or udp. NFC for payment does not really appeal all that much to me. Takes just as much effort to pull out my card or cash as it does to take out my phone. Phone NFC payments you have to enter a code(I am not too sure about this one)? For a lot of card transactions I do not even have to do that. Sorry off topic....

Very much on topic. There are many people who may want to update there sim card after the upgrade (Like you or myself for example). Understanding the risks and rewards is pretty much the point of this thread. The actual technique has been beaten to death some 200+ pages ago.

I have posted this a couple times but what i did in a nutshell was order a new sim online through verizon and take that sim to BJ's. After making the kid that worked there promise that he wouldn't take away my UDP I let him activate my sim. He was also able to add insurance. I doubt I could have done either one of those things at a Verizon store without loosing UDP.

Yes, I've done it before. Transferred an upgrade from an UDP line to a dumbphone line. Activated it on the dumbphone line, reactivated the dumbphone and then activated the new smartphone on the UDP line. However, that is not a feasible method anymore (at least on a dumbphone line) because of the data requirement. It sound like you might be able to skip activation on the dumbphone line and just activate it directly on the UDP line and just have the pending activation drop off the dumbphone line. Don't think it has been confirmed whether this really works to avoid the data requirement yet.

I have gotten a new SIM in the Verizon store after keeping my UDP. It was no problem what so ever. Abs yes you can order them online. Did that first but the one I got online would not work that's why I went to the store.

I just meant my personal opinion on if I care about NFC or not is off topic. lol

Should be able to wait a couple weeks then activate your own NFC chip online once the activate status goes away. In the past I have obtained an sim card from an apple store, but you have to be lucky I think with who you get. Also 3rd party verizon vendors, if they won't give you one they will typically sell you one for about $20. Which might suck but to me it's better than going to the verizon store.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have read through a lot of posts and I am still not sure what to do. I hope someone can help me.

I have 4 lines
line 1 UDP Upgrade available iphone4
line 2 UDP upgrade available LG revolution
line 3 UDP upgrade available iphone 5 (away at college)
line 4 2GB no upgrade iphone 4

Line 1 needs a new phone. I transferred the upgrade from line 1 to line 4 online, ordered an iphone 6 online for line 4 - the online process said I did not have to change data plans at all because 2GB data plan on line 4. My plan is to eventually have the new phone on line 1 (line 1 really needs a phone). When I started this process, I did not realize that the iphone 4 on line 1 has no sim card.

hmm - a challenge. I thought maybe I could switch phones with line 2 (LG revolution has full sim), take the sim out when the phone is on line 1, and cut it down to put in the iphone 6. I have an extra full sim so that would work to reactivate LG rev on line 2. I know using the iphone 5 i=on line 3 would be better, but it is far far away. I thought if i transferred the phones before activating the iphone 6 on line 4 this would work. When I tried, the system said that line 1 is being used for an upgrade and I can not switch until after that is complete.

Right now, line 1 still has UDP with the contract extended 2 years
Line 4 has 2GB with its original contract intact (upgrade date unchanged next year)

From what I can tell, activating the iphone on line 4 should not affect the udp on line 1. Correct???

It is the moving of the phone to line 1 without a sim card for that line that worries me. What happens if I just switch phones online and keep the sim in? Or I deactivate the phone on line 4 and reactivate on line 1 again with same sim. Or I deactivate on line 4, try to get a new sim from verizon, and activate with that on line 1. I don't see any other options and if I pick the wrong one, I know I will lose UDP forever.

Another complication is that I asked Verizon to explain where in their online process of upgrade transfer it shows changing the data plan from the UDP line with upgrade when transfering the upgrade to 2GB line and they agreed it did not say that but told me that is what will happen if I try. I told them that was very misleading. They did not like that and flagged my account. I should have kept my mouth shut but the attitude they have really gets to me. So - I think they are looking for me to do this and if I call customer service for help at all, I will lose.

Am I just out of luck here? I just got the phone and can still return it within the 14 day period so that is an option. My daughter will not be happy but I do not want to lose UDP. Yes she uses more than 2GB/month - right now about 10GB.

Like I posted earlier I went into a Verizon corporate store after keeping my UDP and got a new SIM no problem what so ever. Even told the lady I used my old SIM in the new phone and that's why I wanted a new one.

Anytime you deal with Verizon you just have to act like you know what you are doing. Go and and tell them you need a new SIM, not ask if you can have a new SIM.

Never ask Verizon anything is the number one rule!!

When you get the phone activate it on line 4 with the SIM that came with it. Then you need to take the phone that was on line 4 and add it back to line 4 online. That will free up the iPhone 6, and then once again online you can add it to any line you want without having to change the SIM card.

This was the first way it was done before everybody started just changing out the SIM. I did it this way when I got my wife a new iPhone earlier this year (5S) and it work easy.

I've dealt with the verizon store for things. I just find it easier for myself to use them as the last resort option when all others have failed. Granted I also have lots of options very close by to me and most are closer than the verizon store itself.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

sorry im sure this may be a double post question but i was originally going to go with the best buy option but looks like with the note4 rebate you have to do it in store at best buy and looks like amazon will be online do the trade in then get the rest of the 200 back from samsung so anyone done the amazone deal latly keep same plan then upgrade get new phone use old sim?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok, this all seemed to make sense until I actually started the process. I have read through a lot of posts and I am still not sure what to do. I hope someone can help.

I'm working with 2 lines
line 1 UDP Droid Bionic upgrade not available (in dire need of upgrade)
line 2 TDP Iphone 5c upgrade available

So I used line 2 upgrade and rec'd iPhone 6 in mail today. Activated iphone 6 on line 2. Now, I went to reactivate the 5c on line 2 to free up the 6. It says I need to switch the sim cards. Does that make sense? I guess I was thinking I wasn't going to have to mess with moving sim cards around.

Thanks in advance

Just switch the SIM cards, don't see why that would be a problem.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I don't know what promo you are talking about, but if you are trying to change your talk and text plan I'm guessing that would change your data plan too.

Do you have to get a new phone to get the promo?

The "talk, txt, data promo" was offered back in 2011 and only a few selected subscribers got them. That promo gives you $20 credits on every line that has a data package. I have 3 lines with UDP so basically saving $60 total just with that promo. It's a heck of a deal! That's what I'm afraid to lose should i dare to try the best buy method to keep UDP.

Your not changing your plan so you will not lose the promo.

Yes, I've done it before. Transferred an upgrade from an UDP line to a dumbphone line. Don't think it has been confirmed whether this really works to avoid the data requirement yet.

Sorry if you misunderstood but i don't have any line with a dumbphone. I have 3 lines with smartphones and all eligible for an upgrade. All have the "talk, txt and data promo" I mentioned above.
