[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Read it in here somewhere, that's why I stated rumor. If I was on the inside of Verizon, obviously I wouldn't post it on here before released. If I stumble across it again I'll copy it, but not going to look for it.

Also heard that from friend at vzw corporate. Plus assumption of liability to keep unlimited was going away.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all. I'm 76 years old and I can use some help here because I don't follow a lot of what is being written. I have unlimited data on Verizon and I watch a lot of Netflix on my phone. I want to get a Note 4 with the discount at Best Buy but don't want to lose my unlimited data. Is there a way to do that? If not, my son is also getting a new phone and he's eligible for an upgrade. He could get the Note 4 and just give it to me but he wants a new phone to (he would take a Note 3, though, so maybe there's a way to do that?). Is there a way to accomplish this without my having to purchase the Note 4 (or Note 3 if I get my son to order the 4 and I buy a 3 for him) at full price? Thank you very much for any assistance you might provide.

Your son preorders the Note 4 in store at Best Buy for subsidized price. Once Note 4 arrives do trade in of any smartphone. Cost for phone would be $299 - $200 + tax.

You order Note 3 thru Bestbuy.com on your UDP line at subsidized price and have it shipped to home. Once it arrives before powering on Note 3 remove sim card it shipped with and destroy. Put your current sim from S3 into Note 3 to activate.

Swap phones by activating S3 to free up Note 3 to move to sons line. Activate Note 3 on sons line to free up Note 4 to move to your UDP line. Activate Note 4 on your UDP line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I also heard about Verizon getting rid of the transferring upgrades option soon
hope it ends up being just a rumor

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I preordered note 4 by transferring unlimited upgrade to tiered data line. So far it appears to be coming, online it shows the tiered data line greyed out waiting for activation

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I spent a lot of time on the phone with 2 different tier 2 techs yesterday. The first one manually removed my hotspot option and told me I should be able to now make any changes I desire. A few hours later I went to setup my voicemail and realized that the voicemail button does not work. I called and spoke to a different tier 2 tech. He had no idea why I could not make changes, and he was also having difficulty making changes. I let him run diagnostics (fearing that I was about to lose UDP) and he reported back that everything looks great. He even said the SIM card was working fine and he couldn't see anything in their system that would prevent changes (no holds on the account, no past due bill, etc.). He asked for help from his supervisor and then came back to me still puzzled. He decided to take one more look at my SIM card. He said he thinks the problem is that I'm using a SIM card from a Moto phone and iPhones like their own SIM cards. So, he put in an order for a new SIM card. I'm hoping that when I pop in the new SIM card I'll be good to go. Since there appears to be nothing in the system that would change my account; the new SIM card shouldn't affect my UDP, right?

I'll report back after I get the new SIM.

I guess it wasn't meant to be, for me to keep UDP. The iPhone I got from Costco.com was partially crippled when I received it. Several features including the hot spot for which I was paying $30/mo. and visual voicemail would not work. As I mentioned previously, without the hot spot (for my iPad) I do not need UDP. It turns out that the crippling had nothing to do with the SIM card, rather those features were unavailable because my account was tagged when I purchased the new phone (is that the "change order" I've heard about?) and those features are not compatible with "my plan." So, even though my account showed UDP, it was not the same as the plan I had before I purchased the new phone.

When I called to have the new SIM activated last night the tech explained that hot spot had been removed from my account because it was not available with my plan, same for visual voicemail. I don't know why he could see that, but the 4 techs I spoke with previously, including two tier 2 techs, couldn't see it.

I switched to an All Everything plan and can temporarily (or permanently) add more data if I need it. My new plan costs less than my previous plan, and even if I have to add a couple GB on occasion, I'll still save money in the long run. I guess I just liked the idea of UDP, even though I don't really need it.

I wonder if what I experienced is the "partial activation" people have mentioned. Be careful ordering phones from Costco.com. Even if you use a different SIM card, all the features you are expecting may not work.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Pretty sure you have to be on the family plan to transfer upgrades. Rumor has it Verizon is thinking about getting rid of alternate upgrades in the future.

I think Verizon already got rid of the option to revert a line to a basic line after signing a contract for data, correct?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I wanted to let everyone know that I tried to keep my unlimited data AND do the $200 rebate plan for the Note 4 at Best Buy. My plan was to swap the SIM from my Galaxy S3 into the Note 4 before it was activated. But I was shown a screen on the best buy computer that stated I'd lose my unlimited data if I did the upgrade, so I got nervous and pulled the plug on the transaction. I don't know if swapping the SIM would have protected me when the phone came in, but I couldn't risk it. I guess I'll just order online for home delivery, pay the $299 and swap the SIM when it comes to my house. Hope this helps someone out there.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Yes this is all knowledge we have learned from this thread. Home delivery is the key, DO NOT mess with the store. And the whole rebate pre-order thing, good luck but I will not be risking it. I will do the same thing I did in April and those steps are outlined in detail and works as I am proof (back in April). Not much has changed on the BB site when going thru the screens. Some verbiage has changed but ultimately you end up getting the same thing on check out. I just don't think there is enough proof out there for me to justify a pre-order then on top of that trying to get an additional discount and keeping my UDP. I'll stick with the method we all know works. But honestly good luck and report back!

Thanks for the update Carl.
Several people report that BestBuy employees are required to power-on the new device in store (which would cancel your unlimited data plan [UDP]). It sounds like you made the wise decision.

If you have the Note4 delivered to your home and then swap SIMs you might try selling the old phone on www.swappa.com or eBay.com. FYI- when you place your order online at BestBuy.com you will see a warning that unlimited data plans are no longer offered...I saw the same message and it is OK to complete the checkout process.

If you sell the old phone be sure to wipe it twice (factory data reset) twice or more before you sell it.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks, shortwave. Further to my story, the Best Buy employee told he I could switch my SIM card before he turned it on. Do you think that would have made any difference if he had already clicked that it would delete my unlimited data on his computer screen? I know you can't know for sure.

Yes on Verizon.com. And yes the date changed. But after I did the transfer I had the phone replaced by asurion on the unlimited line and now the unlimited line shows that it's eligible for upgrade again, the tiered line is still greyed out saying waiting for activation.

This is the 3rd time I've done this, And this is the second time the unlimited line went back to eligible for upgrade. The last time was 3 months ago and it still says upgrade available.

Carl, I am not familiar at all with the trade-in program so I'm just speculating...I wouldn't have more than just a guess whether the BB employee process would have killed your UDP. I am very surprised he said you could have swapped SIMs first as others report this is a definite no-no at BestBuy.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks to everyone on this topic. I've been following this for months and finally pulled the trigger. Ordered from BB late Saturday and took the free shipping. What can I say but that I'm cheap! Promised delivery in 8 - 10 days and it arrived in two. Swapped out sim and turned it on. New phone and kept UDP. I couldn't have done it without everyone's help. Thanks again.

What phone did you get?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Samsung S5. Since I activated it last evening it has had two OS upgrades. Hope that this doesn't become habit forming.

It's been out a little while so probably just updates since release catching up.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sorry if a stupid question (prob is, I am a noob) - am trying to find an alternative to SIM cutting for the bestbuy method. Has anyone had success with walking into a VZ store, telling them you have ordered a phone off contract elsewhere, and need a nano SIM card? Assuming if they issue you a nano SIM w/ all your details on it, you can then load it into the new phone received via BB.com w/o relinquishing UDP, right? Thanks in advance!
