[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Can someone explain the "two unlimited lines" method from the FAQ? I don't quite understand it, but I think it may be what I need. I've got two smart phones, one eligible, one not, and one dumb phone eligible. From what I understand the simple "order with dumb phone and SIM switch the smart you actually want" doesn't work anymore due to the 2 year data charge thing.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

i went to best buys website and it says that the verizon note 4 is in store only, i'm hoping this will change upon release otherwise bad news and i feel verizon is in on it.

Any one try this yet?

Line 1 UDP w/ upgrade
Line 2 UDP w/ upgrade

First off can you transfer an upgrade to another line with an upgrade available? If so then could you transfer upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2 then order the phone and swap sims when you receive it?

You can not transfer an upgrade to a line that has an upgrade.

Best Buy method would be the best way as far as I know.

Hm, then does the Verizon method of buying a phone with Line 1 or Line 2 then activating it on the opposite line that you used the upgrade on work?

Ex.

Line 1 w/ UDP
Line 2 w/ UDP

Use Line 2 upgrade and when phone arrives just activate it on Line 1 instead. All done through Verizon.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have an UDP with an older LG 4G LTE phone and a 4GB tiered line I recently upgraded with an LG G2 both on the same calling plan. The UDP phone has an upgrade available. Can I swap lines and then upgrade the older phone, which would now be on the tiered line, without losing my UDP?.

Yes.

With the Nexus 6 release (coming to Verizon unbelievably) hoping that the ability to transfer a UDP upgrade to a tiered line and transfer it back stays at least long enough so I can upgrade to that phone!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks for the link, had not seen that yet. That said, I find it hard to believe for the reason brought up in the thread. If implemented as stated, UDP users would effectively be locked out from the used phone market completely. I just can't imagine VZW doing this.

Imagine the case where an UDP phone user has an old working smartphone that was purchased from VZW on subsidy before all these UDP changes or on a different line and all the requirements were met (2 years, yadda yadda). The user is going camping and doesn't want to risk his current phone in the elements so he pops out his SIM and puts it in his legally bought and paid for old smartphone. Verizon is going to cancel their unlimited data plan because of this? Call me crazy, but I can't imagine VZW wanting to deal with that can of worms.

Yeah I call BS on that!!! Not to sure it's that easy for them to track the meid like that then determine to kick you off udp. Unless they see an udp is amazingly on a new two year contract. Even then I don't see how they could simply say, see ya, welcome to your 2gb tdp.

My response would be, well I didn't do anything wrong. I was given a subsidized price during checkout that said keep existing plan so how can you kick me. Heck, a couple pages back someone confirmed even the transfer upgrade still worked and maintained udp.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey guys,

Great thread, but getting a little long and confusing a bit, so apologies if I'm repetitive with some questions I have.

First, I'm on a Nationwide Talk Shared plan, line 1 is my Galaxy S4 UDP and it's up for upgrade. Line 2 is dummy line/non-smartphone (looks like I'm paying like $10/mo for monthly access, $10 data pkg) and expires 7/10/15.

I went to my local Verizon (non-official) store a few weeks ago in hopes of upgrading to an LG G3, since they are the ones who put me on this plan last year so I could upgrade my phone before 2 years (using the 2nd line), but of course the old loopholes closed and they said i need to wait til the 2nd line expires next summer or i lose unlimited, unless I buy at full retail.

So one question I have is if I do that new Verizon Edge program where you pay a monthly fee towards a new phone, would that count as a full retail buy and enable me to upgrade now (and keep my unlimited plan)?

And 2nd question is, I assume if I do the BestBuy method (online purchase, put my current S4's SIM in the new phone before turning on the first time), I can just upgrade that way and then when my 2nd line is up for upgrade in July (if I wanted to get a new phone again then), I could do a regular upgrade and just sell my phone and put another dummy phone on line 2?

Just trying to grasp the options... thanks!

My understanding is you can't just Edge to keep UDP. But I'm not 100% sure.

Best buy method would be the easiest. But you can still use the transfer method on Verizon also.

If you use the transfer method or buy a smart phone in the dumb phone line when it has an upgrade the new rules stick you with a 2 use data plan on that line no matter which phone you keep on it. So you will be looking at a $30 data fee for 24 months even if you put the dumb phone back on the line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks tx_tuff. Just did a chat with Verizon about that angle I asked about in my thread to see if i was to buy a new phone on Edge ($29/mo or whatever for 2 years = ~$700) to see if that would be the same as buying full retail to enable an upgrade now, but the rep said no, ' the only way to keep the unlimited data is to purchase at full price'.

You'd think that Verizon would like people to buy new every year to make more $ instead of putting up all these roadblocks ;-(

I guess I'll consider doing the Best Buy method if that loophole isn't closed as someone tried to say in a post above. Need to decide if I want to go for a LG G3 or Note 4 (S5 is out of the question since they didn't come out with a 32gb version)...

FYI don't ever ask a Verizon rep about the loop holes, I know that's not what you asked about. But even if you do they will tell you it doesn't work when it does.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Anyone see that Bestbuy mobile online says in store only? Does that mean that you can only buy the phone in the store or is it just to pre order in the store? And does that mean that you can only buy the phone online tomorrow?
