[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Your way is definite the quickest! But still, you paid about $400 more than doing the BB upgrade method. To you, it was worth it. There is actually a potential advantage to using an upgrade. It extends the contract for 2 years, which would make it harder for Verizon to mess with the unlimited data in that time. If you're month to month, they could probably forcefully take it from you.

Good point. I was not aware of the contract extension and in the back of my mind I am aware their could be risks with going month-to-month as I am. I just know that I was trying to find information about how to do it the legit way and there isn't much info out there. I don't want to give Verizon any ammo to use against me if they decide to take a closer look at my account. (I even pay for hotspot, but I just add/remove the feature as needed and it comes out to about $1 per day that I have the feature active (prorated))

The way things have been going, I am hoping that verizon will eventually offer a respectable amount of data for a fair price and maybe I would be more willing to jump ship to a TDP someday. But like you said, for me it's worth it and works for me. Do what works for you.

Well this whole thread is about getting the phone at the subsidized price, that's why there is little to no info about buying at full price to keep a UDP. Not to mention that full price is only the fool proof way of keeping a UDP and therefore no real reason to have a long thread about it.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

However, if you can get a cheaper price and willing to assume the risks, by all means, have at it and good luck.

You are not without risks yourself. From what I've read/seen, Verizon is perfectly within their rights to drop unlimited data from anyone at any given time (whether on contract or not). They thought process is, if they do this to people on contract, they would be able to cancel their contracts without ETF because of the change in terms.

If Verizon *did* decide to kill everyone's unlimited data, you would be in a much worse position after just paying full retail for the phone, versus someone who paid the upgrade price.

Yes, obviously there is no need for a full blown thread to discuss paying full price. I just wanted to get my little blip in here just in case someone else wanted to do what I was doing and this way they could find a reference. I had trouble finding reliable info myself. I had heard of people paying full price and still losing unlimited due to a bad verizon rep. I just wanted to minimize my risk by being informed and after going through the process, I wanted to inform others of my experience.

Yep, I know my risks. Just trying to minimize them. Verizon won't be able to look at my account and say I violated terms and conditions. However, if they pull Unlimited from everybody, oh well, I still have a sweet phone, regardless of what I payed for it. :)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

As I'm looking through the slickdeals thread, it seems as though the UDVZWIP4 method isn't working for phones like the iPhone 4s.

In the slickdealswiki it says, "If neither you nor any one on your family plan has a 4G LTE phone, you are going to have to either buy or borrow a Verizon 4G LTE phone."

Trying to make sense of how I can upgrade with a 4G LTE phone on my family plan.

Line 1: iPhone4s (UDP) - Upgrade Available
Line 2: iPhone4s (UDP) - Upgrade Available trying to get the iPhone 6 on this line ultimately
Line 3: iPhone5s (UDP) - No upgrade
Line 4: Basic - Upgrade available

Does that mean I can transfer an upgrade from Line 2 -> Line 3 so I can get the iPhone 6 for Line 3 via the BB method & then once it arrives & I do the sim card switch, I switch that phone to Line 2? Or do I have to switch the lines prior to ordering the phone so I can have the account information already on Line 2?

Or is there a better method? Any help would be highly appreciated!!

Thank you for reading this!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have

Nationwide 700 Min Plan
Unlimited Text
1 UDP : Upgrade Available - Month-Month
1 TDP : Upgrade Not Available till 1/29/2015 - Contracted

I am looking to do the 4ever Method but on Verizon.com don't see a way to transfer the upgrade. Also if I Transfer the upgrade to the TDP line come 1/29/2015 will the TDP have another upgrade to use or will it be auto used during the upgrade transfer? I will try the Costco or BB method if it will cancel out her upcoming upgrade as she also needs a new phone soon.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

As soon as I log into my account there is a red box under my phones that say "Upgrade My Device" when you click on that it will take you to a screen showing all your phones, the one with the upgrade has a link under it saying "Transfer This Upgrade". Click on that.

The contract goes to the line the transfer came from, so your TDP line will keep it's upgrade.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm trying to upgrade my wife's iPhone 4s UDP to iPhone 6. So if I'm reading all the comments correctly, I can find a LTE phone to get her an LTE Sim card. Then buy an iPhone 6 at BB or Costco online with a 2yr contract for the sub price, when the iPhone 6 comes in, do not turn it on, take the Sim it came with, swap it with the already activates Sim card then turn on phone and she'll keep her UDP?

This is what I currently have.
Line 1 iPhone 4s UDP. Avg less than 1gb of data
Line 2 Moto X UDP. Avg 3gb data
Line 3 basic feature phone on contract
Have the 700min shared plan.

So if this doesn't work it won't be a huge hit since she doesn't use much data for now but says it planning to use more (gym).

Thanks

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sorry, did not see start of your thread. Can you explain how the Tiered data line now has 4GB data for the price of 2GB ? Is this a Costco promotion or a Verizon one or other ? Thanks.

My wife got this via a Costco promotion years ago.

The contract goes to the line the transfer came from, so your TDP line will keep it's upgrade.

So when I do that it forces the order to go through Verizon. That is fine by me but is there anyway to do it via BB or Costco for a better deal on the phone? If not no biggie still a subsidized phone.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I used the BB method and got my Note 4 yesterday (used the upgrade available on my S4's Unlimited's line) and my account still shows unlimited and my contract date has moved to 2 years so it looks like it worked just fine.

Now I'm trying to see if there's any pending activation on my account. I saw in a thread to find it you have to Sign into your account on a computer and then select "activate or switch devices". If there is a pending activation it will show here on the line used to purchase the upgrade.

All I see is this on that page (see screenshot below) - does that mean there is no pending activation? Verizon Wireless Select A Line Multiline.png

From this screen you need to select a phone different from what you just upgraded and then click next. You will then be presented with a screen that allows you to switch devices. Choose the new upgraded phone. If you have a pending activation it will tell you.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thank you very much for your help. I think I will go the route you suggested, option 2 and order a nano sim from Verizon.

I don't have a 4g phone, but I'll order one off ebay for this process. There seems to be a bunch of droid bionics available for around 35 bucks. It says it takes a mini sim so I'll look for an adapter.

When I activate the nano sim, do I do it online before I put it into the adapter and into the bionic. Or do I put in the phone and somehow activate it? This sounds like a truly rudimentary question, but thanks for the help

I would say that you need to activate it online before putting it into the bionic.

Ok thanks for the tip. Just did what you said and there is a pending activation sitting there "Our records indicate you recently purchased a device for this line of service but have not activated it yet. You have the option to proceed with your device swap after you have activated your new device, or you may contact Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 for further assistance."
Hopefully will drop off after a week like most others...

You have to try their website, I have no idea.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Did the 4ever method. Website was broken and kept just loading blank pages during the process. Went into a Verizon Authorized store. Transferred Upgrade. Got Droid Turbo. My UDP now has a 2 year contract added, still UDP. Wifes TDP still has a upcoming end to her contract. Worked like a charm.

In my case it was a VZW promo about 4 years ago when going from 3G to 4G phones.
