[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Well, I spoke with Verizon business customer support and they said there is no way to transfer the number from the line that we are de-activating onto the UDP line that I am going to be using.

I guess my only option is to transfer the number to Google voice, terminate that line, and then import the number off of Google Voice onto the UDP line?

I would like to know HOW I port the number from Google Voice onto the phone once I insert the Sim card making it the UDP phone

You request it online in the same location as "Change Mobile Number". You'll see it when you go to request a new number for your current line after requesting the initial port to Google Voice.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just stumbled upon this forum and I gotta say you guys are awesome. I was ready to give up on my dreams of owning the nexus 6 but now there's hope for me.

I have 2 UDP and 1 TDP. Rumor has it that the Nexus 6 will be available on Feb 26th. If that's the case, I want to transfer my upgrade to line 3 TDP. But here's where I'm concern, Line 3 was recently upgraded a few days ago so she now has the G3. I'm hoping this shouldn't be an issue.

Line 1 UDP - GS5
Line 2 UDP - GNEX (upgrade available obviously lol )
Line 3 TDP - G3

So from my understanding, I should purchase the Nexus 6 with Best Buy and have it shipped and activate the phone under Line 3 (so I can program the Nano SIM) Once activated, I should wait an hour and move the Nexus 6 to Line 2 through Verizon's website then assign the G3 back to line 3. Is this process correct?

That's pretty close, but quite right. You'll need to activate the G3 before moving the Nexus 6 on to your unlimited line. There are two different ways in doing this:

1.) Activate the G3 on your line once the Nexus 6 is activated on line 3. After that, you can log into Verizon and choose to switch devices between lines 2 and 3.

2.) Reactivate the G3 on to Line 3 and then activate the Nexus 6 on Line 2.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks. That's what I thought might be the way to go. If on the other hand, I were to upgrade from my line would it be better to put the RAZR MAXX back on the line and then just do the Best Buy method? Reason being that both the RAZR MAXX and the Note 4 have micro sim.

Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

You can if you want to. It really doesn't matter which way you go. I'd personally recommend just moving your upgrade.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So if I were to sign up for Google Voice right now, would I do the following? :

"I want to use my mobile number"
-- This would remove my mobile number from my line?

And now that it would be on Google Voice means I have to unlock it and then port it onto the new line?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Okay. It didn't work Verizon ststes, "The SIM card associated with the two devices you requested to switch services between are incompatible." we cannot complete this request online, please contact us for assistance

Dusoccer, explained much of the process already, but you are basically correct. When you select the "I want to use my Mobile #" this will take the number away from VERIZON WIRELESS, disconnect your line and charge you the ETF.

You'll have to allow some time for the port in to be completed, but you should be able to login to google.com/voice and check the status.

Once that's done, you'll unlock your number and then go to your Verizon Wireless account online or call in.

You'll port your Google Voice # back to Verizon and replace your brother's existing number with your Google Voice # and you'll have his Unlimited Data.

I admire what you are doing, even though it may seem like a pain. It's worth it to keep unlimited data.

However, be aware that it may take up to 1-2 days to port in and port out (it may also happen much quicker), so be prepared if you miss some text messages and or experience some delays.

Not trying to be a downer, but I just want to give you a heads up. Good Luck.

Which part didn't work? My guess is that Verizon is not allowing you to switch devices between the S4 and 6+? If so, this can be easily fixed by using the old iPhone 4s. Just do the following:

1.) Power down the S4 and 6+
2.) Log into Verizon and reactivate the iPhone 4s on to the old line (this frees up the 6+)
3.) Now activate the 6+ on the unlimited line in place of the S4 (freeing up the S4)
4.) Now activate the S4 in place of the 4s.

It's frustrating that the system won't do a simple switch, but those steps will work.

I'll try to give you a step-by-step guide to avoid the ETF (you should call Verizon to find out how much that will be), but cannot promise anything:

1.) Open up two different browser tabs. One should be for Google Voice and the other your Verizon account (signed in).
2.) Request to port your number into Google Voice by following the directions and paying $20
3.) As soon as the request to port has finished (basically immediately after paying $20) go to the other tab and request a new number for the line that you are porting. This will allow you to avoid the ETF. If you do not want to keep the line, then do not request a new number. You'll get charged an ETF, but the line will be closed.
4.) It will take about 24 hours before your port request goes through. You will not receive calls or texts so plan on a different way to communicate with friends and family. Calls take about 24 hours with texts taking as long as 72 hours before starting to work.

At this point, you have a decision to make. You can use Google Voice full time or port your number back to the unlimited line. There are pros and cons, but the choice is yours. To port back, you'll need to:

1.) Unlock your number in Google Voice
2.) Log into Verizon and request to port a number onto the unlimited line

This process is going to take some time to work, so make sure to plan ahead.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I am trying to do that now. I am at the Verizon website.
I have placed the old apple 4s back in service On the 2gig line.
I now am trying to replace the samung s4 with the new a iPhone 6 but am running into a screen that says "You are requesting to change from a 3rd device to a 4G device. 4G devices require a SIM card."
then it states.
"Please select an option below."
Option one is Send me a new SIM card
Option two is I have an existing SIM card
which one do I choose.

Choose "existing SIM card" as you'll use the nano-SIM that came with the new phone. You'll just need to enter the IMEI and SIM numbers at the next step. Verizon will then reprogram the nano-SIM to your unlimited line.

You'll have to do the same thing for the S4 when you replace the 4s.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Wanted to see if anyone could guide me in the proper direction...

Currently have

L1: UDP 4G LTE, eligible for upgrade (on month to month)

I purchased the Iphone 6 in a Best Buy store today at full retail price. After coming home i looked at this thread to see if I could possibly use my upgrade and return the device I purchased today. I HAVE NOT OPENED OR ACTIVATED the device I purchased today. Just wanted to check and see if my only option (being a single line plan) is to purchase at retail as I have done, or is it possible to order online and get at the contract price of $299 for 64gb

Regarding the bolded part: Are you saying if I decided not to keep the UDP line, right? Because I plan on canceling the line that I am currently on so I can ultimately switch to the UDP line, that is the goal here.

Just want to clarify, that's all. And thanks a ton for the info.

No. I'm talking about the tiered line that you are currently on. When you are ready to port to Google Voice you can do one of two things:

1.) Just port directly to Google Voice, close your current line, and get charged an ETF since your current line is still on contract.

or

2.) To avoid being charged an ETF and keeping your current tiered line open, you can request a new number for it as soon as you request a port to Google Voice. By doing this you'll move your current number to Google Voice and have a brand new number on your old tiered line.

Really, the choice is yours. Do you need to keep your current tiered line for any reason? Do you want to pay an ETF? If you are fine with an ETF and closing your current tiered line, just focus on number 1.

It is possible to order online and get the contracted price even with a Single Line. What phone do you currently have?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I currently have iphone 5. I guess I will now return the phone today and wait a couple of days and then order through bb onilne

That's the way to do it. When the new phone arrives just put your old sim into the 6 before turning it on or plugging it in. Since both the 5 and 6 use a nano-SIM, it will work fine.

Note, you will be extending your contract with Verizon for another 2 years by doing this.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Here's my situation - two separate accounts, "His" and "Hers". I need a sanity check from someone.

Account 1, 1 line, UDP - Started with a Galaxy Nexus, currently a Galaxy S3 so still a "3G" phone as far as VZW is concerned. Month-to-month.

Account 2, 1 line - "Current" offering - More Everything with Edge, Galaxy S5. (Wife's phone)

She would like a Note 4; I'm tired of the S3 and wouldn't mind having her S5. The accounts are not linked in any way, shape or form.

I initially planned on buying a CPO Note4 from VZW for full price ($489), giving it to her and moving her S5 onto my account. So, I started digging and found this thread along with the monster thread at slickdeals. It's enlightened me, but also prompted more questions:

1. The topic when I started the research: What happens if an Edge phone "goes away" from Account 2 and re-appears elsewhere, like on Account 1? I assume the monthly Edge fees will continue on Account 2, and that's fine. Is there anything else that's a red flag here? The sim would stay behind, and the Edge fees will be paid...so as far a VZW is concerned they're happy....right?

2. As noted, VZW has a Note4, Certified Pre-owned for $489 full price. Could I just buy that thing outright on my account, have them activate it and keep UDP? Then swapping the SIMs is simple some afternoon (assuming #1 above isn't any big deal).

2.a. I'm guessing it won't work to buy that on my account (even though it IS full price) and maintain my unlimited data. So, if I get it as a "new customer" and do the "Best Buy Method" of swapping the S5 SIM into it when it arrives...are we getting somewhere? If I swapped the sim, what status would that leave the S5 in? (Same as #1 above, I assume).

3. I'm OK paying the CPO cost in option 2, but I'm not opposed to using the upgrade from the UDP line in Account1 to get the Note4. Surely I can't transfer the upgrade to another ACCOUNT, just another line on the same account, correct? I only have one line, so that leaves me doing the "Best Buy" upgrade method to get a Note4 delivered to my home, for $299 (I like that better than #2, obviously). Bonus is that I'm not flirting with the VZW devil / system.

With either option 2a or option 3, I realize I'll need to acquire a 4gLTE SIM. I can probably get my hands on an iPhone5, but that nets me a nano sim card, and the S5 appears to be a micro. Sigh. Nothing's easy, is it?

Am I missing anything in this mess?

Lots of good questions here:

1.) The edge fee will stay on the line and continue to be included on the monthly bill. The only catch is that she cannot edge up later on as the S5 must be turned in to do so.

2.) You can buy the Note 4 outright on your line and have it activated to maintain your unlimited plan. Even a certified pre-own counts as it would be no different that buying a used phone from a 3rd party.

If you want to use your upgrade, there is a method that should work:

1.) Order a new SIM for your wife's S5 from Verizon.
2.) Order the Note 4 from Best Buy and have it shipped to home.
3.) When the Note 4 arrives, remove and destroy the SIM that came with the phone.
4.) Power down the S5 and remove its SIM. Put your wife's SIM in the Note 4. This will activate the Note 4 on her line.
5.) Now activate the S5 with the new SIM ordered in step 1 on your line.

By doing this method, your line will end up with a pending activation for about a month.
