[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok after step #4 is done and I want to activate the new phone (that was activated/deactivated on the TDP) on the UDP what option do I select : a device that was or wasn't previously been used with this account?

A device that was previously used on this account is what you select. The phone was on your tiered line, so it has been activate on your account before. :-)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I do not have a balance on my account and go the same error. Did you get around this or does anyone else have any thoughts?

Code:
Your wireless carrier has requested additional verification. Please call us at 1-877-702-2211. We'll be happy to help you complete your order. Please have this error code handy when you call: 2051

It sounds like you are trying to do the Best Buy method. This message is common. You are going to need to cancel your order and try again. If you call, Best Buy will contact Verizon with you on the phone and force you onto a tiered plan before shipping the device. This is happening more and more frequently with the Best Buy method. My suggestion would be to cancel your order and do:

1.) Try the Best Buy method again if you prefer
or
2.) "Upgrade" your basic line and follow the steps I outlined for you previously. Upgrading the basic line tends to avoid these messages from Best Buy.

OK, maybe I am missing something here.. (sorry for ignorance)..

I went to Best Buy and selected the iPhone 6 plus I wanted. I chose upgrade and put in the details of my account using the basic line's phone number. It says eligible, and goes all the way through to the payment portion. That is where I get this. Is this different than just upgrading a basic line like you are talking about in step 2? I'm just confused. Again, sorry for my ignorance here. I greatly appreciate your help!

Strange with the basic line. Try clicking the "Return to Cart" button and then attempt to verify again to see if it will go through

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It doesn't matter what you do as long as you follow the directions exactly. If you do the Best Buy method just use the old SIM and toss the new one before turning it on or charging it. If you upgrade the basic line, just activate it directly onto the unlimited line and you'll be fine.

I know I'm butting into the middle of a conversation but......I thought Verizon closed the loophole of using a basic line upgrade last year. If you upgrade the basic line aren't you now forced into keep the 2 year data contract on the basic line? You saying you can get around this by not even activating the new phone on the basic line and putting it directly on the UDP line? I thought I'd read the wiki deeply and knew all the little details but this might be something new I learned....is this in the OP? If not it should be. At the same time I'm sorta worried about doing this (only other option is best buy method).

UPDATE: Classic case of reading something 100 times to make sure get it and then the 101st time the light bulb goes off and it clicks. I get it now but still worried about this method, probably just intimidated by the matter of fact headlines from last year that 'Verizon has closed this loophole' (even though you get around by not even activating on the basic line).....any record of this not working?

It's safe to use either a basic line's upgrade or transfer one to a basic line. The difference is the process after ordering the smartphone. Previously, a person would temporarily activate the smartphone on the basic line. He or she would then reactivate the old basic phone and move the smartphone to the unlimited line. Verizon has shut this down as activating the smartphone on the basic line will cause the 2-year data plan to become active.

The method that works is bypassing the activation on the basic line and just activating the new smartphone directly onto the unlimited line. This bypasses the data plan requirement since it is tied to activation on the basic line. All a person needs to do is:

1.) Use a basic line's upgrade or transfer an unlimited line upgrade to a basic
2.) Order the smartphone and have it shipped to home (can use Verizon or Best Buy)
3.) When the smartphone arrives, the person just activates it directly onto the unlimited line by doing either:
3a.) Taking the unlimited SIM and swapping it into the new smartphone if the SIM sizes match
3b.) Logging into Verizon and activating it using the IMEI and SIM numbers if the SIM sizes do not match (this recodes the SIM to the unlimited data plan)

This way works just like the Best Buy method. Both Best Buy and Basic work because the plan changed is triggered when the new smartphone gets activated. It's coded in the SIM. Best Buy works because you never actually use the new SIM. The basic works because you either never use the new SIM or reprogram it to a different data plan.

ya I know you've said this a million times re reading the thread but it finally clicked for me....thanks for your patience and help! Major major help

I had to do this a few times, and it finally let it go through. So when I get it, I will activate on the website by IMEI on the unlimited data line .. correct?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So anyone know how to fix this or get around it?

Line 1 basic that recently became tiered - no upgrade
Line 2 udp - no upgrade

Situation... Line 1 used upgrade recently and bought a new smartphone, activated it and used for about 1hr. Then Line 2 popped in their udp sim into that phone after Line 1 activated old dumb phone. Then Line 2 transferred upgrade to Line 1 and bought another smartphone. Received it and tried to activate it but gives the error "We cannot process your request at this time, please try again later."

Any idea?

Correct. You'll log into Verizon and click "activate or switch device". Just select your unlimited data line, choose activate a new device that has not been on the account before, and input the IMEI and SIM numbers that come with the new phone.

How are you trying to activate the phone? Are you using online or calling Verizon? That sounds like a system error. Try this...log into Verizon and select Line 1 (the new tiered one). What phone shows up? Do you have a message that indicates you recently purchased a device?

I'm going through My Verzion and selecting activate device and when I click on the basic/tiered line to activate it gives that error "Your request cannot be completed. We cannot process your request at this time, please try again later."

Currently a dumb phone is showing but that's because I reactivated a dumb phone back on the line after giving the smartphone to the UDP.

Sounds like something is wrong on Verizon's end. I would just wait a few hours and try again.

Hm, well it's been about a week since I transferred the basic/tiered line smartphone to the UDP and today is when I received the transferred upgrade phone from the UDP line and tried to activate it on the basic/tiered. I would assume going to the store or calling in about this is a bad idea?

It should be safe to contact Verizon, but I would recommend proceeding with caution. Do you have an old smartphone you can try to activate on Line 1? I have a feeling that part of this is do to you putting the dumbphone back on Line 1.

ya I think so also because when I added it, it basically asked me for the same data plan (which I was basically forced to). What steps do you suggest I take when contacting Verizon? Will them seeing a transferred upgrade to the basic/tiered line cause problems?

Unfortunately, you are in uncharted territory for me. Just make sure you document everything. In theory, it should be a quick activation of the new smartphone on the tiered line, but I don't know for sure. Make sure you update everyone after you speak with them.

Update: so calling in and getting tech support saying activation and giving the phone IMEI # solved the issue. So far so good, UDP still UDP and phone is activated. Took about a couple min only. Thanks for the help!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Out of curiousity, is a 2gb plan suppose to say 1.419 GB total?

It should be 2gb. It was probably prorated for the month. Was a change made to the contract in the middle of the billing cycle?
