[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have the nationwide talk share plan
Line#1 UDP w/ upgrade- galaxy nexus
Line#2 basic w/upgrade
Line#3 basic w/upgrade.

So if I want an iphone 6 plus on line 1, how would I upgrade line 3 and then put the basic phone back on line 3 at 9.99/mo. The other thing is the Sim card from the nexus and iPhone aren't compatible. Could I use the new Sim on iPhone and keep the UDP?

You have to be careful upgrading the basic lines. Directly upgrading will force the $30 data plan for two years.

I would order it from apple on the basic line. Do not turn it on and trash the sim. I did this a couple months ago and it did not force data on the dumbphone line.

You can then either cut your sim down or get a new one. You can purchase it online or from a Verizon authorized store. You can also try to call or go to a Verizon corporate store and ask for a SIM. Just tell them you purchased a used iPhone.

So u would order directly from apple and not from bb or Verizon online. My main concern is getting stuck with a data plan on a dumb line

I would do it through a third party such as Apple or Best Buy. I would not try through Verizon. You should also stay away from companies that charge a second ETF like Amazon. I think you can by transferring upgrades on Verizon but you are out of contract on all lines so you can't do this.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

From what I've read I thought that if u transfer the device online u can use the Sim that came with the phone

You are correct but you can't transfer the upgrade. You need a line to be in contract and without an upgrade available to transfer the upgrade to it.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So basically does this mean that I have to pay full price for the phone in order to keep my udp on my first line

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok so this answer is in this thread somewhere, but I can't seem to find it.

L1: UDP smartphone - upgrade available
L2: TDP smartphone
L3: Basic Phone - upgrade available

Can I transfer L3 upgrade to L2, purchase a new nexus 6 using that upgrade, then instead of activating it on L2, activate it on L1 instead? Or do I need to activate it on L2 first, then switch the phone to L1 and re-activate the old L2 phone? I am avoiding using the upgrade from L1 so would that prevent them from taking the UDP? Thanks.

You can transfer either upgrade to Line 2 and keep unlimited data on line 1. If you don't activate the phone on line 2 you will be stuck with a pending activation for possible a couple months. As long as you don't need to make changes to Line 2 that is not a big deal. If you activate the phone and the SIMs are the same size you just need to swap the SIMs.

How many phones are you planning on getting? What phones do you have in your unlimited lines now?

I would probably upgrade line three online through Best Buy or Apple. When you get the Phone so not turn it on and destroy the SIM. Then put the SIM from your unlimited line. You will be left with a pending activation. When that is gone you can transfer the upgrades to that line and do the same thing.

You can also just use the best buy method on the unlimited lines.

the 2 lines with udp have S3's on them. id only be ugrading 1 line at this point

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

looking at either the s5 or note 4. any suggestions?
It is the same size SIM. I would order from best buy for delivery. Do not do in store pickup. I would upgrade the basic line. Do not turn on the phone and trash the sim. Then put your unlimited sim in the phone. You will be left with a pending activation. When that drops off you can transfer your upgrades to the basic line and basically do the same thing again.

1) use a basic phone's upgrade and order iPhone from Apple or Best Buy and have it shipped to home.

2) when it arrives, log into Verizon online and activate the phone directly onto the unlimited line. Use the IMEI and SIM numbers that come with the phone. Do this before turning it on.

If you do these two things, you won't have to worry about mismatched SIMs.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Is this possible to do going from the S4 to an S6? I have an upgrade on on of my kids lines but want grab an S6 for my udp line. I assume the sim on the S6 is different than the S4?

They are different size SIM cards. You will need a nano SIM. If your kids line is tiered just upgrade their line and swap the phones online.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

After you have activated the new phone on the tiered line, if the SIM matches the unlimited, you can just swap them if like. If you log into Verizon, it will make you do this anyways.

Sorry for another question. If after activating the phone on the tiered line I just swap sims and put the UDP sim into the new phone, how would that impact insurance on the lines?

Currently both the UDP line and tiered lines both have insurance on them, would it just carry over to the new phone if I swap sims, or do I also have to do something else online?

When doing this using the Verizon method, I'm assuming if the sim on the tiered and UDP lines is the same size as the new phone I'm getting (nano sim for S6), I can just disregard the sim that came with the phone in the box? Just want to make sure that Verizon's system is registering the proper phone on each line and continues to have insurance on it if I'm just popping the current tiered sim in and then waiting and putting the UDP sim in. I wasn't sure if I need to do any other interaction with their system.

I really appreciate the help, thanks!

The Verizon Assurion insurance covers the phone that is active on the line at the time of the incident/claim. I have gotten phones on other lines without insurance and swapped them to the unlimited line with insurance. I made a claim on a Note 3 without any issues.

Whatever you do always make sure the phone you want replaced is active on the line when you make the claim.
