[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So, if I understand this correctly: my line with unlimited data is eligible for an upgrade. If I want to keep it, I can order the phone from verizon, best buy or wherever else. During the order process I'll be forced to select a different data package. When the phone arrives, before turning it on, I remove the sim and replace it with my existing sim. This will allow me to get the subsidized pricing without losing my unlimited data? I'm just super paranoid about losing it haha, but I'm desperate for an upgrade and my phone is the last one eligible.
If you order from Verizon you need to transfer the upgrade. If you order from a third party you can discard the sim. Expect for Costco and Motorola.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

1) Order a nano-SIM card by calling Verizon and having one shipped to you
2) Order the new iPhone from Best Buy using the upgrade on your line.
3) When the new phone arrives, do not turn it on or plug it in, remove the SIM card that ships with the phone and destroy it
4) Log onto Verizon online and click activate or switch a device
5) If you are asked do you want to activate or verify the phone that just shipped to you, click on "No, I want to activate a different device" or "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page"
6) Click you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before
7) Type in the IMEI of the device and SIM card number of the SIM card you ordered in Step 1
8) Continue to follow the instructions

If you run into problems, just let the forum know and we can help. If you decide to add your parents to your plan, there is a different method you can do (though the above one should still work).

My Verizon SIM card is on its way and so is my iPhone 6 from best buy. I will definitely keep you posted! Thanks for all the help;)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I will be attempting the 4ever method today. I pre ordered the galaxy s6 from best buy and they said I can pick it up this morning In store.
line 1 - UDP galaxy s5 - upgrage
line 2 - TDP galaxy s4 - no upgrade

The plan is to have them transfer the upgrade from line 1 to line 2 and upgrade the s4 to the s6 and activate in store. After a couple hours of use line 2 I will re-activate the s4 back to line 2, cut down the sim from the line 1 s5 and switch the sim into the s6.

Does anyone have any advise before I attempt this? I have read that this works but I have also read not to don't in store. But what is the difference if I have them switch the upgrade and activate it to line 2 In store vs online? Same thing right?

Thanks in advance!!

Good luck. In theory it should work in-store, but you never know when interacting with reps. Generally, it is advised that you ship to home so that you do not have to deal with others. Reps are likely to make up stuff (like you will lose your unlimited). Some will even manually move you off. You have to be extremely careful when working with reps.

Upgrading on the tiered line works. There are thousands of posts both here, on Slickdeals, and countless other websites that show proof. All of them are done at home and online through Verizon's system. This way prevents reps from going rogue and intentionally moving you off unlimited.

If it works, keep us informed, though the recommendation will still be to do any upgrading at home.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey guys.
I've read most the recent posts about upgrading since they seem to refer to the S6, but I don't think any of them are similar to mine.

Heres my situation:
L1: Unlimited Data GS3 - Upgrade
L2: Data Plan MOTO something - Upgrade
L3: Data Plan iPhone 6 - No upgrade
L4: Data Plan iPhone 5S - No upgrade

So, I went into a Verizon store my friend works at to purchase the S6. I used the upgrade available on L2. My friend activates it. I was going to transfer the SIMs but I realized the S6 uses a nanosim. My GS3 uses a microsim. Now I'm stuck. My friend gave me an extra microsim to use for whatever reason.

Now with all of this, how do I get the S6 onto the Unlimited Data line?

If you take to Verizon or call them, you will lose your unlimited data plan!!! Do not do that.

Try reactivating your old phone. Do you still have this issue? If so, then you have a bad SIM. If not, then you have a bad phone. My advice would be to return the phone to Best Buy and get your upgrade restored. Then, I would transfer your upgrade to a tiered line rather than do the Best Buy Method. The single best thing about using an upgrade on the tiered line is that it is safe to involve Verizon since you are dealing with a tiered line.

FOLLOW UP...... FROM .....
I have 5 phone lines
L1: G2, Unlimted - upgrade available
L2: S3, Unlimted - upgrade available
L3: LG smart phone, 2GB- no upgrade available
I want to upgrade L1 and L2 and keep UDP.

It turns out the S5 via BB was defective (bad micro phone). I ended up returning S5 and waited couple of days to get the upgrade restored to the L2. And this time I re-ordered S5 from BB by transfer upgrade L2 to L3, instead of what suggested method through Verizon, only BB because still was offering S5 for $1, not any more. When the phone came, I tried activate the L3 with new phone and new simcard that was pre-installed. But it did not work, I tried at least a half dozen times and gave up. I end up trashing the pre-installed simcard. Then used L3's existing 2GB simcard and used the phone for 24 hours. Check the verizonwireless website confirmed that L3 was showing with S5. ....... Now this was wired, the L2 still had upgrade available with UDP, and L3 was shown with S5. What the hack is going on?

After 48 hours of using L3 with New S5, I restored the the existing L3's simcard back on L3 and now I have S5 as free phone and wired that L1 & L2 still shows that upgrade is available even after I have new phone from BB?

I don't want to call verizon for any reason for this upgrade issue. Why is the upgrade availability still shows on L2, will they catch this later on?

Can I use the new phone on L2? Can I use L2's UDP simcard in new S5? is there anything concern? will I loose UDP?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Here is my current situation:

L1: Moto Razr UPD - Upgrade
L2: iPhone6 TDP - No Upgrade (Edit: Data Plan is specifically "More Every Unl Tlk Txt 15GB")
L3: Verizon Router TDP - No Upgrade

My Motorola Razr is so slow to be frankly unusable, plus the back of it just split open.

Concerns
1) Need to keep UDP.
2) Need to be able to run FoxFi.

I am thinking that upgrading to the S6 would be a good way to go. I tried the BB method but BB cannot pull my info from Verizon. My bill is not late, so that can't be it. I guess the only real option is to transfer the upgrade to the TDP line online at Verizon and after it is activated, swap it to the UDP line. I was going to just buy the cutter on Amazon to cut the Razr sim down to a nano.

Has anyone taken this route recently and succeeded without losing the UDP? Any thoughts on FoxFi on the S6?

Thanks for all the wonderful info. Been reading the thread, just wanted official final confirmation before I pull the trigger. Failure is catastrophic here since we can't get cable or DSL and we do a lot of data with our business.

Thanks,

FG

EDIT: I can do the BB method, I was just entering in the wrong password for line confirmation. I am frankly more comfortable doing the BB method because it does not mess with my wife's phone. And deal with Verizon directly. Was about to try Verizon, but looks like there is an additional $40 "upgrade fee" and on top of that is $249 instead of the $199 at Best Buy. There is a mail in rebate, but all told it's throwing away at least $40... Is the 4ever method via Verizon worth the $40 charge?

Will Best Buy ship the S6? If they will not you will have to wait until they do.

I prefer the transfer upgrade. You can do this through Verizon. You just don't activate the phone on your wife's line. You will be left with a pending activation for a couple months. That usually use not a problem.

Foxfi works with my Note 4 on 5.0.1. I am hopeful it will work on the S6.

Just go online and activate the new nano sim on your account. Your friend should of been able to do that at the store.

I have the nanosim/S6 activated on L2 that has the TDP. I want to transfer the S6 to the UDP line, which is L1. Wouldn't changing SIMs take out my unlimited data?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Transfer the upgrade to one of the basic lines and select the 2gb plan. I assume they are under contract? When you get the Phone do not turn it on. Put your unlimited sim into the phone. You either need to cut your sim down or get a new nano sim. By not activating it will not add data to the basic line.

Why can't I turn on the phone when it arrives again?
Can I just turn it on under line 4, confirm it works then move the phone over to Line 1 online?
I am concerned that the pending activation will come back to bite me with Line 4 for some reason.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

How did you go about getting the phone? Did you do the insurance when you added the phone? Generally in the past I just swapped SIMs and the insurance stayed on the account.

I transferred the upgrade to my TDP line through Best Buy. I waited an hour before transferring the Nexus 6 to my line. I had to program the nano SIM since I was coming from a galaxy nexus.

L1: UDP Iphone w Upgrade Available
L2: UDP Iphone 5S with NO UPGRADE

L1 wants to keep same phone, L2 wants to upgrade to an Iphone 6. Can I order the Iphone6 on Line 1 using the BB method, then just throw out the sim, insert L2's 5S sim and activate the phone on L2?

If you activate it on the dumbphone line it is possible you will be stuck paying for data on that line for 2 years. I am not 100 percent positive if this happens on transfers. On a direct upgrade of a basic line this does happen.

The pending activation will go away in a couple months. It will only be a problem if you want change the phone on that line.

No. Directly upgrading the line will. Changing Sims will not convert your unlimited plan to tiered.

No. Directly upgrading the line will. Changing Sims will not convert your unlimited plan to tiered.

So, I would have to take the current SIM in the S3 that is tied to the UDP and cut it to fit in the S6, then toss the nanoSIM that is in the S6 currently?

There are several things you can do.

1. You can cut your sim and use it in the S6. Then just swap the sim from the S6 back to the old phone.

2. You can activate a new sim on your line. Then just swap the sim from the S6 back to the old phone.

3. You can swap the phone by using the account manager on the website.

4. You can go to a Verizon store and have them swap the phones. Because you did not use your upgrade this should not be a problem. As always be careful when at the store. You need to verify everything they do.

I attempted to do Option #3, but it says "The SIM cards associated with the two devices you requested to switch services between are incompatible."

As for Option #2, I can't swap the SIM from the S6 as it is a nanoSIM. The phone I would transfer it to uses a microSIM.

You could use an adapter.
