[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks for the info but i not clear on what to do with the sim cards. Reading thru all the different senarios kinda confused me on what sim card should be in the phone when I activate them. Can you please clarify this for me...thanks in advance

Just follow the directions that come with phone as there is no need to worry about the SIM cards. Because you are activating on a tiered line, you end up using the SIM card that comes with the Note 4. When you reactivate the Droid Maxx, you use the SIM card that is already in that phone. By reactivating the SIM in the Maxx, you inactivate the SIM in the Note 4. Finally, when you activate the SIM in the Note 4, you end up reprogramming it to the unlimited line.

Because the SIMs are different sizes, don't worry about switching them around. Just follow the online directions and everything will work fine.

Question for Dusoccer

So, I got my S5 from S3 via transferring upgrade to wifes flip phone. followed your directions and the S5 registers my number as I did use my previous SIM card. Everything works data/voice/registration etc. My wifes phone is still in limbo and I need to switch it back to her number. I assume go to Verizon website and somewhere there is a place to switch it back? But I'm not quite sure how to do that and also if you could be so kind to offer your advice...The salesperson said the plan remains the same and I also assume that that will be indicated on the VZW site as well. Is there anything else that I need to do to wrap up this project? Thank you so much for your good advice and I hope that I don't get that $10 charge per month for her phone getting my upgrade.

Re: Question for Dusoccer

Keep my Unlimited WORKED!!!!!!
Even using my wifes flip phone as the decoy. I thought that I had lost it because when I went to switch her number back to her phone from the Verizon site it wouldn't send the authentication code. So, basically I gave up and found one one Ebay to buy outright, made arrangements to meet this guy, and called Verizon to put the plan all back to the way it was before. She said,"Why do you want to do that?" I told her that I thought I would loose my unlimited data if I activated my wifes dumb phone back. She said, "Nooooo, of course not." (So at this point, I'm in shock and didn't know what to say next) "So I get to keep unlimited data on the S5?" "Yes" (Ok now I was kind of shaking) Then she had me turn on my wifes phone and she activated it. And turn the new S5 back on (and I'm scrambling to get my SIM back in the slot asap because it was all put back in the box to go back to Best Buy.) And I turned it on and it worked. My wife said, "You better call another rep and make sure!!!!" I went to the Verizon site and it showed everything intact. Unlimited data on the S5 and all phones active on their respective numbers. Hallelujah. Thanks dusoccer for your method. And now we know, it even works with a frick'n flip phone.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

1.) Feel free to order the phone from Verizon if you want. Anyone with a tiered line should use Best Buy or Verizon as they are the only two online sites that allow upgrade transfers. Granted, you are not moving an upgrade this time, but it is safe to do your method.

2.) Just follow the online directions for activating the new phone. SIM cards can be reprogrammed to fit the data plan. In your scenario, you'll activate the Nexus 6 on Line 4 which will program the SIM to be 2 GB. When you reactivate the 4s, this will disassociate the Nexus 6 and its SIM. When you move the Nexus 6 to Line 2, the steps will reprogram the SIM that came with the phone to the unlimited data plan. You do not need your old SIM with this method. If they were the same size, then you could just SIM swap, but that is not the case in your scenario.

Ok, I need a little advice.

I now have my new Nexus 6 in hand. I have done the following:

1. Activated it on my sister-in-laws 2GB TDP line
2. Made calls, texts, etc. and kept it active for about an hour and a half.
3. Powered down the Nexus 6
4. Re-activated the iPhone 4s that was originally on the 2GB TDP line, it's now fully functional
5. Logged into my Verizon account, clicked on activate/switch device, selected my UDP line, clicked "Next" and am getting the following error message: "Your request cannot be completed. We cannot process your request at this time, please try again later."

At this point I'm wondering what my options are to get the new Nexus 6 activated on my UDP without losing my Unlimited data. I'm guessing I shouldn't call Verizon to have them do the activation, but maybe I'm wrong.

I was thinking I could just cut down the SIM from my Note 2, throw it in the Nexus 6 and power it up, maybe that will do the trick?

So, any thoughts or suggestions of how to activate the phone and ensure I don't lose my UDP?

Sounds like Verizon's system is acting up a little bit. Just take the Nexus 6 to a VAR and have them activate it on your unlimited line. At this point, the Nexus 6 is no different than buying a phone from ebay or craigslist.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sorry to rehash what has been covered in some context in most of these posts but here is my situation:

Line 1: Droid Razr Maxx w/UDP Upgrade Available
Line 2: Galaxy S5 with 2GB TDP No Upgrade Available

I would like to get the Galaxy S6 on my UDP line by transferring the upgrade to the TDP (Line 2) and then purchasing the phone via VZ or BB (online + shipping to my home).

When I walk through the purchasing process on the VZ site I come to a screen wherein I am asked to select a data plan for the phone (basically wants me to agree to the 2GB more everything plan). At this point I stopped because I didn't want to go down a bad path.

From the BB site I can get the upgrade transferred without issue... But when I look at the checkout screen I don't see anything that pertains to a plan nor did I ever see any option to keep existing data plan. I went through all of the screens up until it was asking to transmit information to my carrier and then I stopped because I didn't see the "keep existing data plan" option.

Finally, just for clarification, it sounds like the steps I would take once I actually do get the phone are to:

1.) Activate it on the TDP with the SIM that came with the phone.
2.) Make some calls and do some texting and leave it in the phone at least an hour (I will probably leave it in overnight).
3.) Deactivate the phone.
4.) Restore activation on Galaxy S5 for the TDP line.
5.) Activate the Galaxy S6 with the SIM that came with the phone.

As I understand it, because I activate the phone on the TDP line, there is no need to cut down the SIM in my Razr Maxx to accommodate the S6. Does all of this sound correct? Is the website approach sounding bizarre to anyone in terms of the screens (or lack thereof) I am encountering?

Thanks!

Everything sounds good to me. As long as the upgrade is used on the tiered line, you'll be fine.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sounds good, I appreciate the info. I'll stop in at a store on the way home to get that done and will let you know how it goes.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello,

Just wanted to say that I have been following this thread for a while, and can't thank dusoccer10 and everyone enough for your feedback. I used the BB method and the top rated SIM cutter from amazon. Popped my freshly cut SIM into my new S6 and it worked! My account recognized the phone change, but It still shows unlimited data. Such a relief. Final step now is to just lay low and hopefully in a few months my account will shed it's pending activation status.

I will report back if I run into any problems, but every day that passes with no changes to my account builds my confidence that all this worrying and work paid off. Good luck all!

UPDATE: Happy to report that the VAR got my phone activated and UNLIMITED DATA still intact!

Thank you, thank you dusoccer10 for all your help, advice, and quick responses to help me make this happen. You're a great person and I hope nothing but the best for you! Seriously, you have helped so many people on here, you're awesome!

Oh, and one side note. When talking with the VAR while he was completing the activation I casually mentioned that I was about ready to cut down my SIM from my Note 2 and pop it in the Nexus 6 to activate. He said, "Oh, you wouldn't want to do that, because it's an old SIM. As SIMs get older they affect your download speeds." He basically went on to say that the SIM dictates a lot of the 4G speeds and as they get old the speeds slow down.

Not sure if this is true or not, but he activated it on the new SIM that came with the phone, so I'm covered either way! Just thought I'd pass that along in case anybody knows more or is having speed issues, this might be the problem.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

What is VAR? I can't figure out this lingo. Lol An update on My line w/ UDP, the upgrade was successful with UDP intact via the BBM and it still shows pending activation on the acct and hopefully will shed soon...need more minutes haha On a side note still have x100 Loyalty Bonus Minutes per month for another year. And the rep I talked to last month said once that runs out I can call back and ask for another Loyalty deal or promo for Minutes! So if you don't have this might be worth the call, unless your in the upgrade process...dont call till your pending activation falls off!!! Ha

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just to confirm what I read back a few pages, if I have a Moto X on tiered line that is elgible for an upgrade and a GS4 on a UDP line that is not elgible for an upgrade. I can:

  1. Order an upgrade for the Moto X
  2. Activate it once received - use it for an hour or more(calls, text, data)
  3. Then go online and swap the new phone to my UDP line(GS4) and move the tiered line(moto x) to the GS4 or back to the moto x

Is there any issue moving the tired line to the GS4 after I deactivate it? Or do I need to reactivate the Moto X first and then move it to the GS4? I would guess it would not matter but wanted to be sure. I was stressing that I would have to cut the gs4 sim and the moto x has a nano so I would have to put an adapter on it to use in the GS4.

Please confirm.
Thanks

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

As long as Costco can do in-store upgrade transfers, you can do the following:

1) Go to Costco;
2) Have the rep transfer one of your UDP line's upgrade to the TDP line that is not currently eligible for its own upgrade - do not mention switching phones around between lines to the rep;
3) Have the rep purchase and activate the S6 on the TDP line;
4) Pay and leave the store;
5) When you get home from the store, wait at least an hour and make a few calls/text from the new smartphone to make sure it activated OK on the TDP line;
6) Log onto Verizon and put the TDP line's old phone back on the TDP line;
7) Log onto Verizon and put the new smartphone on the UDP line.

That is all you need to do. If you do not want to do in-store, then your only options will be to purchase from Verizon or Best Buy. They are the only two retailers that allow moving upgrades online. If you want to do everything from home, I recommend just buying from Verizon or Best Buy, but the choice is yours.

Hi I just followed the plan shown above and when I went to change the phones around on line i received a message that the two phone on my account could not recieve the online authorization code. I it possible to achieve the same result by switching the sim cards around in the phones?? here are the phones involved. If not, what would you suggest??
line 1--htc dna udp upgrade avail
line 2--droid maxx tdp no upgrade avail
upgraged from line 1 transfered in store to line 2 and activated in store. udp still intact at this point
any help you can offer would be appriciated--tks!!

You are right on the money with what needs to be done. You won't need to cut your SIM or use an adapter. You might have to swap SIMs if they match, but Verizon's system will direct you on what to do.

Take the nano SIM in the S6 and put it in the Maxx. This will get the Maxx back on its line. Then take the S6 to a VAR to get it placed on the unlimited line.

sorry i forgot to mention that the new phone is a s5 and takes a micro sim....should i consider cutting the micro sim to fit the droid maxx?? also the dna has a nano sim in a micro adapter, this should fit in the s5, if so would there still be a need to go to a var??.
thanks!!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok this just made my night coming across this page as I thought I was going to have to pay full price for the galaxy s6 edge to keep my unlimited data plan! I recently went to bestbuy and was told all loop holes had been closed to preserve ULD plan. Last time I used the upgrade from a dummy line I had due to my wife losing her phone and never getting insurance. What I did was upgrade that line to the gs4 and was told to keep it on that line for 25 hours then switch the s4 to the udl line, reinstate the old dumb phone and cancel the data on the line which worked great but like I mentioned best buy said no go. Does that method still work or should I go a different route and shed that line all together? I just want to preserve the uld for as long as possible. Thank you for any and all advice! ! !

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello, I read the thread for past few days, and before i proceed with my upgrade, i just want to verify with you guys. Thanks for the help in advance!

L1: basic phone + no data plan // offered iphone 6 upgrade with extra $200 discount (currently suspended cause number owner is at overseas, but i can reactivate and do everything and resuspend.)
L2: LG g3 + udp // eligible for upgrade
L3: Samsung Galaxy S3 + udp // eligible for upgrade
L4: Samsung Galaxy S4 + udp // eligible for early edge upgrade (don't really know what this mean)

I am trying use L1's iphone upgrade to use it on L4.
so there are the steps that i need to take:
1. from vzw website, i place an order for iphone using L1's promotional upgrade (add data plan to upgrade)
2. once i get a phone at HOME, i take out sim that is in the iphone and turn of S4
3. go to vzw account page, then select activate or switch device option
4. when it shows me to type some number, type in iphone's sim card # and imei #
5. put new simcard back to the iphone, and turn it on
6. check call, data etc to make sure everything is working fine (but it should work just fine right?)

Another question is, i found that it may show that i have a pending activation later down the road,
when that shows up, what should i do?

Thank you very much,
