[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I did best buy method and purchased a note 4. I read that I'd having a pending verification notice someone in the acct. But when I log into my acct. I don't see that anywhere. Where will it say it? I want to know if it fell off. I bought the phone like 2 weeks ago.

Try adding a feature to your phone like mobile hotspot. If you can do it, then the pending activation feel off.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm in the process of doing the Best Buy method (via Amazon). Quick question, once I swap the SIM and everything is running, will Verizon "know" I'm on the new phone? Specifically I want to know if they will start sending Over-The-Air system updates to the new phone. I'm trying to avoid that if possible, the only reason I needed a new phone in the first place is that the latest RAZR HD update effectively ruined my old one. Any suggestions on avoiding OTA updates is appreciated (yes, I know I can just refuse it, but having to do that every time I turn on my phone is not a solution).

If Verizon sends an over the air update, your phone will receive it. The only way to avoid the notification would be to buy a phone that can be rooted. When you add a new recovery, it blocks over-the-air updates.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

After reading more scenarios I think I've got this, but want to get some final advice. I have the following on the NATIONWIDE TALK & TEXT FS 1400:

Line 1: UDP iPhone 4 no upgrade
Line 2: UDP Note 2 upgrade available now (my line)
Line 3: UDP iPhone 5 no upgrade
Line 4: 2GB TDP iPhone 4s upgrade available now

I want to upgrade my Line 2 to a Nexus 6. From what I gather, I should

1. Order the upgrade through Line 4 (the 2GB TDP) and have it shipped to me
2. When it arrives I should activate it on Line 4 (the 2GB TDP)
3. Use phone, text, make calls, etc. to ensure fully activated and keep it on for at least an hour
4. Shut down the new Nexus 6 that's on Line 4 and also shut down my Note 2 that's on Line 2.
5. Go online to verizonwireless.com, first reactivate the iPhone 4s on Line 4 that was originally on that line, then activate the new Nexus 6 on my Line 2 that I want it on with the UDP.

I believe this is the best method out of all I've read that would be the most straight-forward while eliminating the "pending activation" issue people are encountering.

Am I correct in that these steps above are the best way to proceed?

My second question is around upgrading the other lines when the time comes. Lines 1 & 3 will have upgrades available next month, so I'm thinking I can just transfer their upgrades to the 2GB TDP (Line 4) and repeat the steps above.

Will that work, as well and still keep UDP for those 2 lines?

I appreciate any help!

Looks like I can. I didn't confirm the purchase but it let's me get to that point. No notice pops up about pending activation. Thanks for the info!!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

On a Nationwide FamilyShare 700 Plan. Let me share my experience...
L1 UDP Not eligible for upgrade.
L2 UDP Upgrade Eligible
Ordered an iPhone 6 Plus 64GB Gold last Saturday via the BBM, btw which it stated "Keep Existing Plan" on receipt. It came Tuesday, opened it up, removed sim card, destroyed sim, removed UDP sim from other phone and inserted in new iPhone, power on...UD! The account still has a Pending Order status on it and from what I've read should knock off soon, but in the mean time can't call Verizon or talk to them at all!!! And can't make plan changes. How long does it take for Pending status to go away? And my next month bill statement won't change to TDP I hope and pray!!! And can you get Equipment Protection Insurance without it touching our UD??

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Good stuff man, glad it worked. I've been wanting to try doing it for awhile, but like everyone I'd hate chancing losing the UDP.

I have my line with UDP (Line 1), and a 2nd line that doesnt get used anymore, its just a basic phone no Data plan on it. Both lines are eligible for upgrade. From what I understand now, If I upgrade the 2nd line, they will force a data plan on me and I have to keep it for the duration of the contract correct? Do you think if purchased from BBM on the 2nd lines upgrade, and didn't activate the phone on that line, and I just put in my current sim from line 1 with UDP. Theres a possibility that they wont add a new data plan on it?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sorry if this is a bit redundant, but I've searched the thread for awhile and this one may have a few outliers...

So here's the situation (obviously want to be ultra-careful here):

Line 1: Samsung S3, UDP, Eligible for Upgrade
Line 2: iPhone 6, TDP, Not Eligible

I received a brand new HTC One M9 from a business partner to use to test an app we're developing. Unfortunately, I've already turned the M9 on and used it via WiFi and even added/transferred my Google accounts to it. However, I've not touched the nano-SIM card that accompanied the device and have never inserted it into the M9 (or anywhere else).

1) Would I be able to upgrade Line 1 to the HTC One M9 and retain UDP? I understand that I should first transfer the upgrade from L1 to L2 via vzw.com. Is it still possible to proceed further even though I've turned on and used the M9 in Wi-Fi mode? Should I delete anything I've installed / configured on the M9 first? Step-by-step instructions would be greatly appreciated so I don't screw this up!

2) I may need to return the M9 to the business partner at some point in the future -- would I need to wait for one of my lines to upgrade again to do another transfer to retain L1s UDP?

Many thanks in advance!

You are right on the money with the steps needed to upgrade to a Nexus 6. You are also correct in how to upgrade Lines 1 and 3 in the future.

As long as you never activate the smartphone on Line 2, the tiered data plan will not go in affect. That is why you can use the basic phone's upgrade and move the new smartphone directly onto Line 1. If you the SIMs are the same size, it's a very simple process:

Unlimited SIM is the same size
1.) Use the upgrade on the basic line to order the smartphone you want from Best Buy or Verizon and have it shipped to home
2.) When the new smartphone arrives, destroy the SIM that comes with it
3.) Insert the unlimited SIM into new smartphone and enjoy!

Unlimited SIM is a different size
1.) Use the upgrade on the basic line to order the smartphone you want from Best Buy or Verizon and have it shipped to home
2.) Either modify your unlimited SIM for the new smartphone or directly activate the phone onto Line 1 using the IMEI and SIM numbers that come with the phone.

The data plan is not forced onto you unless you activate the new smartphone on the basic line. At that time, the new data plan will go in effect. The two methods above bypass the activation since you are not activating the phone on the basic line...it goes directly onto the unlimited line.

Don't worry about upgrading if the phone is temporarily free. Just take the new phone to Verizon and they can activate it for you. Make sure they do not touch your data plan (they shouldn't), but it is safe to get Verizon involved.

Keep your old S3 around if you need a phone to go back on Line 1 in case you need to return the M9. When you are ready to upgrade full time, it is very easy since you have a tiered line. As long as you upgrade on the tiered line and activate it on that line too, you will be able to keep your unlimited. In your current scenario, you would just transfer your unlimited upgrade to the tiered line.

Oh, dusoccer10, I have two more questions.

1. Verizon is offering the Nexus 6 for $199 directly through their website, while BestBuy has it priced at $249, so I'd rather pay the $199 directly through Verizon. Is it safe for me to do all of this online directly through Verizon's website, rather than the BB method a lot of people have been using?

2. When I activate the new Nexus 6 on the 2GB TDP should I use the SIM that comes with the phone, then after waiting an hour, switch the Nexus 6 to my UDP and continue using the new SIM that came with the phone? Or, after an hour on the TDP, am I supposed to switch out the SIM and put the one from my Note 2 tied to my UDP into the Nexus 6?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks for the helpful reply, dusoccer10! So just to clarify, why is it safe to bring the M9 to Verizon and have them activate it on Line 1 (while still maintaining UDP)? Would my situation be equivalent to someone buying an unlocked phone or used device off ebay/craigslist? Should I be wary of them using the Nano-Sim that came with the M9? I guess I'm just afraid Verizon has programmed their reps to eradicate any instance of UDP they find! Thanks...

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I think I managed to screw up the Verizon online upgrade transfer process, by not waiting an hour on the TDP line before switching back to the original phone. Here's my situation and the result.

Line 1: IPhone6+ TDP
Line 2: GNex UDP

Transfered upgrade from line 2 to line 1, ordered S6 online and shipped. Activated the S6 on line 1, made sure calls and texts worked, waited roughly 30 minutes, went online and switched line 1 back to IPhone6 (using the IPhone's original SIM).

I had Verizon ship me a nano sim (to avoid having to cut my GNex SIM), so I put that nano sim into the S6 and activation failed. About this time, I get an email saying there's been fraud detected on line 1 and it's suspended (something about unauthorized long distance calls). So I called fraud department and they unlock everything after they see no fraud.

So now I'm back at the original phones on each line and an S6 that was activated for a short time on line 1.

When I go into Verizon online and go to Activate or Switch devices to try and get the S6 on line 2, it still sees the S6 order and asks if I'm activating that phone. Since the order is associated with the phone, will that cause the UDP to be removed if I try and continue activating the S6 on line 2 via Verizon online?

I'm thinking I may need to start the process over again with activating and leaving it for an hour?

Thanks for the help. You guys are saints.

1.) Feel free to order the phone from Verizon if you want. Anyone with a tiered line should use Best Buy or Verizon as they are the only two online sites that allow upgrade transfers. Granted, you are not moving an upgrade this time, but it is safe to do your method.

2.) Just follow the online directions for activating the new phone. SIM cards can be reprogrammed to fit the data plan. In your scenario, you'll activate the Nexus 6 on Line 4 which will program the SIM to be 2 GB. When you reactivate the 4s, this will disassociate the Nexus 6 and its SIM. When you move the Nexus 6 to Line 2, the steps will reprogram the SIM that came with the phone to the unlimited data plan. You do not need your old SIM with this method. If they were the same size, then you could just SIM swap, but that is not the case in your scenario.

Your case is exactly like buying an unlocked phone or a device off ebay/craigslist. If you want them to use a new SIM, just don't take the nano that came with the M9. Verizon keeps blank SIMs at their store that can be easily reprogrammed. It should be free for you to get it activated.

If you don't want to use a corporate store, you can also take the M9 to a VAR. They can do the same things and tend to care less about how people got the phone. It would cost you around $10 to go this route.

Finally, you can try activating the phone from home if you want. It should work either online or by calling in from the iPhone.

Since the SIM that came with the phone is not affiliated with your account, you should be able to reprogram it. Any of the above would work, it's just a matter of your comfort level.

Is the pending S6 order on Line 1 or Line 2? If it is showing on the tiered line (Line 1), then just reactivate the phone in place of the 6+. This time wait an hour to make sure the activation processes in Verizon's system. After that, just reactivate the 6+ and move the S6 to Line 2.

If the pending activation is on Line 2 (the unlimited line), the return the phone and start over.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So when I just attempted the best buy method (I used it 3 days ago for my wife's phone) for my phone line. It didn't give me the "keep my current plan" option should I be concerned? It only gave me the options of 2 year contract or edge. I went up to the point of confirming order and I can't find that option? Am I missing something or have they changed it in the last few days?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi is there anyway to keep udp and purchase a phone from costco...the are offering a 70 dollar rebate on the note 4. if so how would that work, this is my phone situation. If costco is not doable, what would you recommend

bought new nano sim at var had to call verizon to complete activation of sim
line1 htc dna with a nano sim installed udp upgrade available
line 2 moto droid maxx no sim tdp no upgrade available

thanks in advance

It shows up for some and others it does not. There is nothing to worry about as your plan will not change until activation. As long as you use your old SIM card before turning on the phone, the plan change will not happen.
