[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello Gurus:
I currently have Nationwide Tlk&Share 2000 min with 3 lines
-Iphone 4S with upgrade
-Galaxy S4 no upgrade (my phone)
-Non smartphone no upgrade
-My phone is the S4 and I want to LEAVE the family plan, purchase a Galaxy S6 Edge but KEEP my UDP. At the same time I know I cant use my own upgrade so I am upgrading the iPhone 4S to a 6.
-How can I leave the plan, keep my unlimited data plan and what plan would that likely be? I understand I will probably have to pay full retail for the S6 Edge.

Thank you in advance for any/all help!
When you say upgrade the 4s is this to the s6 edge or an iPhone 6?

Are you the account owner? It is tricky to assume liability of unlimited plans. They say new customers need a business account. I have heard there are some provisions for family members to AOL unlimited lines. I am not sure.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The 4S I am upgrading to iPhone 6, assumed I should go ahead and do that before I leave the family plan. I am an account manager but the actual billing/SSN/etc is not under my name.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi! I've been following this thread for a while now, and I too, like other people, would just like to confirm the steps needed in my scenario to upgrade my phone without losing my unlimited data. So here is what I think I'm supposed to do... any confirmations or other suggestions will be greatly appreciated! first off, my situation. i've had my note 2 with verizon for about 2.5 years now and am eligible for an upgrade but haven't been doing so because i have unlimited data and don't want to lose that.

1. buy galaxy s6 from best buy website and have it shipped home.
2. without turning it on, take out sim card that came in the s6 and put in sim card that was in my note 2(planning to buy sim cutter from amazon)
3. turn phone on, and voila? will i have unlimited data and a spanking brand new phone?

You are right on the money. Once you cut your Note 2 SIM to a nano, you'll be all set.

The upgrade will stay with the line, so it doesn't matter when you do that. Personally, I would go ahead and do the upgrade so that you are not messing with phones at the same time as trying to separate a line.

As for leaving the family plan and keeping the unlimited data, it is all about who the AOL department you get as some reps are more friendly than others. I know that you can at least move your unlimited line into it's own subaccount. I'm not sure if that will allow you to do whatever it is you want to do, but it might help. AOLing is tricky with unlimited data. You might need to call Verizon multiple times until you get a rep that is friendly to your plans.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I assume you mean Edge as this about Verizon. You cannot use Edge to upgrade as you must choose a new plan to use it.

In your case, just order the phone from Best Buy and cut your SIM from the DNA.

Thanks :)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

L1- UDP Samsung GS4 upgrade available
L2- TDP IPhone 5c no upgrade available
L3- Standard w/o data upgrade available 5/23
Correct me if I am wrong:
I'm going to cancel line 3 since I can't use the dummy line loop hole anymore. I want to get the gs6 edge onto my unlimited data line without losing it. I can upgrade the unlimited data line as long as I destroy the sim before powering on or even charging the phone and insert my sim (that has to be cut to nano) power on the s6 and let it sit and activate on its own and pretty much do nothing with Verizon other than pay my bill for how long? I think I am correct but here's my dilemma... I dropped my phone today cracking the screen and digitizer. I am DEFINITELY not paying to have it repaired again so I am wondering if it is a must to do the process on line? I was thinking if I went to best buy and told them it was a gift or something so they didn't open the box leaving it inactive till the person received it and then activated it? Is there a way to do it and get my phone today? Maybe bring my wife and upgrade her line with my upgrade transferred? I'm lost without a phone lol

I highly doubt you can do it in the store. As always YMMV. I would just transfer the upgrade to the tiered line and buy the phone from Verizon online. Then trade in a cheap prepaid phone and get the $100 trade in credit.

ok so i went to verizon online and transfered upgrade but when i went to order the phone it said it wouldn't ship until may 19th tried other versions of the s6 with same thing? unfortunately i cant wait that long because my phone is destroyed. so then since i transfered the upgrade i went to best buy online which doesn't reflect the upgrade transfer?

That's because the upgrade transfer in Verizon's system doesn't stick once you leave its website. You need to switch your upgrade in Best Buy's system. It's pretty easy to do. For help, look at the screen shots here: Slickdeals.net - View Single Post - Upgrade and keep your Unlimited Data with Verizon and follow the process. You can move your upgrade to the tiered line and order the S6 from Best Buy.

Also, you can use the upgrade on the basic line when it becomes available. The process for using it is a little bit different than before.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I know this is probably me being paranoid, but I figured I'd get a second opinion anyway. I originally had a Droid RAZR with UDP. Used the BBY method to upgrade to the HTC One M8, cut down my micro SIM into a nano SIM. Everything worked with no problems.

Back in January I dropped my M8 in the snow and it eventually stopped working. I went out and bought the Motorola Luge prepaid for $50 when it was on sale as a temporary phone. Used the adapter that came with the SIM cutter so that my cut down SIM would fit in the the micro SIM slot.

Fast forward to now: I finally was able to replace my M8. Paid $350 unactivated at Best Buy yesterday. My question is, since I bought this phone outright, would I be okay just activating the nano SIM that came preinstalled, or should i just remove it and use my original SIM to be on the safe side?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

First off thanks for all individuals taking time to respond to these questions. I'm confused on current option based on no SIM ifor older iphone

Line 1 : UDP Iphone 4 upgrade available
Line 2 : UDP S4 upgrade available
Line 3: dumb phone no data no upgrade

End goal:
Replace iphone 4 with iphone 6, leave S4 as-is

Thanks in advance

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I went to the store and bought the phone. Told him it was for a gift for my daughter and that she never gets anything new, That is why, "I don't want you to even turn it on or put the battery in" He agreed and home I went same day. I have a complete post of what I did a few pages back.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

PLEASE HELP ASAP (May need to cancel order) Spoke to Best Buy and they will only allow me to purchase 2 phones in 1 yr. I am a family of 5 and we all NEED new phones. How can I keep my UDP and still get 5 new phones. Please help ASAP as I may have to cancel the 2 new phones I have already ordered. Was thinking about ordering from amazon also and that would bring me to 4 but not sure how to get the 5th or if doing amazon will work like best buy does.

Thank you!!

I thought you couldn't do the dummy line anymore? Would I be better off doing that method?

I did this as well. It works. Just stay out nice and if they refuse, be politely firm.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm going to try this because the transfer upgrade method on best buy no longer works... So if they want to open the box tell them politely scary firm that you do not want it opened as it is a gift if not no deal? Man I hope that works I'm going straight after work!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I too have a Verizon UPD and want to upgrade my phone (Razr Maxx) to a Galaxy S6 without losing my UPD.

It appears as though everyone upgrading by swapping SIM cards is doing so with multiple lines.

I only have 1 line on my account . . .can I add a line to that account, and then order the S6 for that account and then switch the SIM cards before activating anything on the new line?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I also have a Verizon UDP plan and want to upgrade my Razr Maxx to the Galaxy S6, but only have 1 line on that account.

Looks to me like everyone using the method of swapping SIM cards and switching phones is doing so with multiple lines.

Can I simply add a line to my account, order the S6 under that line and them swap SIM cards and so on when it arrives?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I could be wrong (haven't kept up on what still works), but your best bet would probably be the Best Buy method. Order the S6 through Best Buy's website and do ship to home. Make sure to select that you're upgrading and that you're keeping your current plan (ignore the warning about being auto switched). If you happen to get an email from Best Buy stating there's a problem with your order and that you need to call them, ignore the email (DO NOT CALL THEM), let the order cancel out, then try again.

Once you do get the phone, immediately remove the pre-installed SIM before powering on the device. Then just cut down the SIM from your Razr Maxx (SIM cutters are on Amazon and not that expensive) and put it into the S6.

This is exactly what I did last year when I upgraded from the Droid Razr to the HTC One M8. I also only have 1 line.
