Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon
I need some advice. Here is my situation:
Verizon NATIONWIDE TLK&TXT SHARE 700
L1: TDP (2GB) iPhone 5c No (upgrade available 10/16/15)
L2: UDP iPhone 5s Yes
L3: Basic phone No (upgrade available 10/16/15)
$143.56 Before taxes
I receive a 22% corporate discount on my $29.99 UDP and would like to move my family to Tmobile to keep monthly costs low while keeping Verizon and my unlimited data for business purposes. When I talked to my corporate Verizon rep he thought it was strange that I received the discount on data rather than the line but recommended that I return to an old individual 450 minute plan with 1000 texts while retaining discounted UDP. He felt I could port the numbers to Tmobile and then since I would be all alone, I could move to the old plan. Ultimately I need 4 smart phones in the house so I am looking to upgrade my 5s to a 6. Pass 5s to daughter, which she will use on a new Tmobile plan. I'd like to port L1 (wife) to Tmobile. My son (L3) would also like a iPhone 6 as he moves to Tmobile but would like to avoid the full cost. He would even wait till October if I could possibly use an upgrade from L1 or L3 for it. Any recommendations ?
The first thing you should do is upgrade the unlimited line to a iPhone 6. Since you are planning on porting soon, I'd recommend avoiding any methods that leave a pending activation on your account. The easiest way to do this is:
1.) Through Best Buy or Verizon online, transfer the upgrade from Line 2 to Line 1 and order the iPhone 6. Have the phone shipped to home.
2.) When the phone arrives, activate it on Line 1 for at least an hour following the directions that come with the phone
3.) After an hour, power off both the 6 and 5s
4.) Take the SIM card out of the 6 and put it in the 5c. Turn on the 5c to activate it on Line 1
5.) Take the SIM card out of the 5s and put it in the 6. Turn on the 6 to activate it on Line 2
This will give the unlimited line the iPhone 6 and extend its contract (Line 1 is not affected by the steps above) for another 2 years. You can now port Line 1 to T-Mobile and establish another line for your daughter. Both the 5c and 5s will work on T-Mobile, so they should be good to go.
As for your son's line, there is no good way to avoid full cost unless it was bought used. Basically, his options are: (1) upgrade in October and pay an ETF after porting, (2) port to T-Mobile and purchase an iPhone through them, or (3) buy full-price or used iPhone. If you plan on having T-Mobile pay the ETF, you'll be required to purchase/finance a phone from them. That is why there is no real good way to avoid paying a lot of money for the iPhone 6 for your son.
