[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

There is a loophole that can use a basic line's upgrade. It's not quite the old way, but it can be done. If you use its upgrade, obviously, this will lock you into another 2 year contract with the basic line. The bigger question is do you need the basic line for another 2 years after using its upgrade?
I don't need the basic line for another 2 years - only if it would save some money in the long run. I am guessing I can't drop the line after transferring its upgrade to my main line in October. I was thinking I could get the new 6S activated on my line and then pass my newly upgraded 6 to my son on T-Mobile.

You might. It depends on the cost of the contract 6S + $240 (new 2 year contract on basic line) versus cost of a 6 at full price.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Maybe I am just not seeing it, or I am confused!
Here is my situation:

UDP on my line - no upgrade avail
Basic Plan on second line - upgrade avail.

How can I keep UDP and get new phone for my line?

Thanks in advance for helping and old guy!

What phone do you have the unlimited line and what new phone do you want?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I ordered an S5 to replace my hubbies beat up phone. I did the best buy method. They were on sale for $1.00 and $53 in taxes. We have two linelines with UDP. Both way past upgrades by like 4 years lol. So I upgraded my line on BB.never was prompted or asked about my plan or changes or anything about data. Just ordered new phone got here in the 16th they shipped it overnight for free but we live in Sam Diego close to where it was shipped from. So have it to my hubby and he put in his old SIM card and it looks as though we are good to go. His line shows him using that model phone and both our lines still say unlimited data. Our cycle starts over on the 23 so I will update if anything changes.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a Galaxy S4.
Want Galaxy S6 Edge.

Thanks.

There are three methods that should work. Through either Best Buy or Verizon online:

Option 1
1.) Order the S6 edge and have it shipped to home. Use the upgrade on the basic line
2.) When it arrives do not turn it on or try to charge it
3.) Log into Verizon online and click on "activate or switch device"
4.) Choose your unlimited line
5.) Select a phone that has never been activated before
6.) Type in the IMEI and SIM numbers that came with S6 edge
7.) Follow the rest of the activation instructions

Option 2
1.) Buy a SIM cutter from Amazon
2.) Follow steps 1 and 2 above in option 1
3.) Power off the S4 and remove its SIM
4.) Cut the S4's SIM to nano-size
5.) Take the freshly cut SIM and install it in the S6 edge
6.) Turn on the S6 edge

Option 3 (order through Best Buy only)
1.) Order the S6 and have it shipped to home
2.) When the S6 arrives destroy the SIM that came with the phone
3.) Take the S6 to a VAR for activation

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The first thing you should do is upgrade the unlimited line to a iPhone 6. Since you are planning on porting soon, I'd recommend avoiding any methods that leave a pending activation on your account. The easiest way to do this is:

1.) Through Best Buy or Verizon online, transfer the upgrade from Line 2 to Line 1 and order the iPhone 6. Have the phone shipped to home.
2.) When the phone arrives, activate it on Line 1 for at least an hour following the directions that come with the phone
3.) After an hour, power off both the 6 and 5s
4.) Take the SIM card out of the 6 and put it in the 5c. Turn on the 5c to activate it on Line 1
5.) Take the SIM card out of the 5s and put it in the 6. Turn on the 6 to activate it on Line 2

This will give the unlimited line the iPhone 6 and extend its contract (Line 1 is not affected by the steps above) for another 2 years. You can now port Line 1 to T-Mobile and establish another line for your daughter. Both the 5c and 5s will work on T-Mobile, so they should be good to go.

As for your son's line, there is no good way to avoid full cost unless it was bought used. Basically, his options are: (1) upgrade in October and pay an ETF after porting, (2) port to T-Mobile and purchase an iPhone through them, or (3) buy full-price or used iPhone. If you plan on having T-Mobile pay the ETF, you'll be required to purchase/finance a phone from them. That is why there is no real good way to avoid paying a lot of money for the iPhone 6 for your son.
Once the L1 is ported to T-mobile and L3 is dropped or ported, will I be able to drop to a single line plan for L2 or will it be locked into NATIONWIDE TLK&TXT SHARE 700 for another 2 years?
Why do you recommend avoiding a pending activation? Is that why it is best to transfer L2 upgrade to L1 instead of just upgrading L2?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I guess what I'm not understanding is how to use the SIM card from the Galaxy S3 to activate the other phones, since they use the smaller SIM cards, and I need to keep the Galaxy S3 card intact.

1) your plan should drop to a single line with 450 talk minutes. Verizon can always move you to this as well.

2) Verizon can always force the plan change if they see a pending activation. You are asking for trouble by trying to do plan changes like porting with a pending activation.

Go to Amazon and search for a SIM cutter. You can cut your SIM to the size you need.

So what is the best way to avoid the pending activation?
If it does happen - is it best to wait until the activation is gone for me to port the line to T-mobile?

Just follow the directions I gave you initially. Transfer the upgrade to your tiered line.

Alright - just to complicate things - I want to wait to use my Verizon upgrade in September when the new iPhones come out. To appease my daughter in the mean time, could I purchase an iPhone 6 at full price and then use it with L2 ULD sim card without affecting the my L2 ULD upgrade and then letting her use my 5s on a new T-mobile contract? There would be no porting to Tmobile - just starting a new line with a bring your own device.

Then in September, I'd use the upgrade to get a 6s and then pass the 6 to my son who would join the T-mobile plan at that point. If this seems possible - which version of the iPhone 6 would be best to purchase at full-price right now?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have 3 smart phone lines but only my line is a UDPi also have 3 basic lines and one of those has an upgrade available now. I went to verizon and they wont let me use the basic phone upgrade to place on one of my other smart phone lines. Then later place the new phone on my UDP line. I was able to do this 2 years ago, but not anymore. I have an S4 now and would like to get the S6 or Note 4. Any help in the steps i should take are greatly appreciated.

That will definitely work. As for which iPhone, I'd buy the unlocked model from Apple directly. It works on all carriers in the US.

No problem. Just order the phone you want from Verizon or Best Buy using the upgrade on the basic line and have it shipped to home. When it arrives do not turn it on or try to charge it. Power off the S4 and do the following:

Note 4
1) remove the SIM card from the Note 4 and destroy it
2) take the SIM card from the S4 and put it in the Note
3) power on the Note to complete activation

S6
1) log onto Verizon online
2) select "activate or switch device"
3) select the S4 line
4) select activate a device that has never been on the account before
5) type in the IMEI and SIM numbers of the S6
6) follow the rest of the instructions to activate the S6

The method varies slightly depending on the phone. Both work and will get you what you want. Both will not cause a data plan to be added to the basic line.

1.) Since I am buying it at full-price would you buy the T-mobile version or the Sim-free version? I have read differing opinions on this. Remember I would be using it on my Verizon L2 ULD for a couple months until the new phones are out.
2.) Just want to make sure - activating this phone on the ULD L2 won't override my Verizon upgrade linked to that line will it?
3.) Finally, as described on the slick deals blog, could I try ordering the full price phone through the Comcast link which takes you to the verizon iconic portal in order to get a $150 gift card? I understand the warnings of not pushing for the gift card too much.

Grandfathered UDP on Vzn like others.
1 line, 450 mins, UDP
Currently have Galaxy Nexus Toro workhorse but its slowly bricking the last 2 months. So slow..

Best Buy currently has $1 LG3 and $199 LG4 with $100 rebate card. Would love to use BB method, but very cautious/worried about losing UDP, average data use is over 20GB/month.

Advice?
