[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You're the BEST dusoccer10!

I was finally able to order the phone today via BB. So just so I am clear ... when my iPhone 6 arrives, I power off my iPhone 5, remove the SIM card, destroy SIM card from new phone, place SIM card from iPhone 5 into new phone, and power on? ... What about the 2 year "contract" that you agree to when purchasing the phone? Will this include the minimum data plan required when purchasing a smartphone (i.e., $30 plan)? I've read several instructions, some related to SIM/IME?? and others saying to activate the new phone then switching, so I'd like to make sure I do the right thing when my phone arrives.

Thank you in advance for the amazing advice you are providing us all!

You have the steps down as it really is that simple. Your already active SIM card will program the iPhone 6 to your unlimited data plan. Just put it into the iPhone 6 before turning it on (or trying to charge the new phone) for the first time.

By using your upgrade in this manner, you are agreeing to a new 2 year contract with Verizon.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello.
I'm excited to be getting a new phone (not hard to figure out why, but my phone's been great. I had no reason to change.)
I wanted to wait until the new phone was officially released, but I already see it mentioned and my excitement is increasing.

Line 1 Note 2 UDP Upgrade Available (mine)
Line 2 iPhone 6+ UDP Upgrade Available (husband's)
Line 3 iPhone 5c 2gbDP Upgrade Available (daughter's)

We're on a old 1400min US & Mexico Plan (kinda like what tmobile is offering, minus the Mex Data)

I can use my daughter's upgrade now, but will be getting her a new phone for Christmas or Birthday.

I want a Note 5, and she may be getting an iPhone 6s.

Please advise a plan to follow.
Thanks so much!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

All, first off, thanks for the help.

In my never-ending quest to preserve my UDP, I got my wife upgraded, then transferred my upgrade to her line, and ordered an S6. As part of the plan stated a few pages ago, I activated the S6 on her line, let it simmer for an hour or so, and then re-activated the wife's iPhone on her TDP. When I try to switch the S6 back to the UDP line, I get "Your request cannot be completed" on the VZW after I select the target line for the activation/switch. Did a bit of Googling, most of which pointed me back to this thread. It seems like there is some general weirdness with the VZW site when it comes to this. It sounds like my options are:

1. Go to a VAR and have them activate the S6 on my UDP line
2. Call VZW and have them activate (earlier in the thread, someone mentioned that as long as the upgrade was on a tiered line, it'd be "safe")

Does that sound about right? Also, is there a known limitation on the site for doing N number of activations/switches in a time-frame? It seems odd that it worked the first time I did it, and then when I do the subsequent activation, it gives me an uber generic error...

Anyways, cheers guys, and thank you.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Heya dusoccer10, I was curious about you saying to destroy the sim card. Isn't the Sim card useless without a device anyway? There's no tracking or anything going on with it if you were to just throw it away.

Do you keep saying to destroy it just to be absolutely safe so that no one ever makes the mistake of putting it in some other device therefore changing their plan and negating their device like a year later or something?

Thanks!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey,
Just out of curiosity, would it be a bad idea to make a minor change in my plan before I switch my UDP to the new phone I ordered?
I wouldn't want to attract any unnecessary attention

Thanks in advance

It's very easy to upgrade to a Note 5 since your daughter has a tiered data plan. I'm assuming that the Note 5 has a nano sized SIM like the S6. If it does not, just come back and I'll tweak the steps for you.

To start, you'll just borrow your daughter's upgrade by doing the following:

1.) Go to a Verizon store and upgrade Line 3 to a Note 5. It's safe to do this since you are using an upgrade on a tiered line that originated there.
2.) After the Note 5 has been activated on Line 3, ask the Verizon rep to activate the old iPhone 5c on Line 1.
3.) Leave the Verizon store and wait at least an hour
4.) After an hour, power off the Note 5 and iPhone 5c
5.) Swap SIM cards between the two phones. Power on the Note 5 and wait for it to activate. Then power on the iPhone 5c

These 5 steps will allow you to upgrade Line 1 to a Note 5 in a few weeks. It's fairly simple. If the Note 5 uses a micro SIM, the steps will be slightly different, but fairly straight forward.

When it comes time to upgrade your daughter's line, you'll just order the new phone online and by transferring the upgrade on either Line 1 or 2.

The error relates to being unable to receive the confirmation text as Verizon's system requires a phone to have been on a line for 30 consecutive days. You are correct in the two options that would work to get the S6 on the unlimited line. Personally, I would just take it to a VAR, but the choice is yours.

The SIM card is currently programmed to change your unlimited plan to tiered data. If it was ever used in a phone, your plan would automatically change. That's why you should destroy it.

There are some methods where a person reprograms the SIM card. In your method, this was not the case. That's why you should destroy it to prevent an accidental activation/plan change.

Hopefully it's a nano SIM. The countdown begins! I screen shot your instructions.
Thanks again! You're awesome for offering and taking the time to answer all our questions.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a question, regarding selling my UDP. I am in a family plan of 4 lines. I am the only UDP. I have been having service issues in my new place for over a year now, so I am thinking about leaving Verizon. How can I sell my plan, and keep the number to use with another provider?

Not sure what you mean by "sell" your plan. You can end your service with them assuming none of your phone lines are in a contract. You are now entitled to port your number (keep) when moving to any other mobile service provider. Just go to whomever you'd like to start service with and they will handle porting your number over to their service.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks startertan. The main plan is not being closed. I am talking only about my line. I saw online (ebay) that some people actually sell their unlimited, is that even possible?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all!

I Currently have the following setup through Verizon:

Line 1: HTC M8 - UDP - No Upgrade
Line 2: iPhone 5S - UDP - No Upgrade
Line 3: Basic, no data - Upgrade Available

I would like to Upgrade my Line 1 to a S6 Edge Plus when it comes out. Would the Bestbuy method work best by ordering it on my dumb line, then simply switching sims when the new phone arrives? I have heard that even if you activate the dumb phone back on the 3rd line it will trigger the TDP.

Thoughts?

Thank you!

Would the BB method work best?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thank you for the quick response! Would another option be to
1. transfer the upgrade from line 1 to line 3
2. order the g4 from verizon using line 3
3. activate the phone on line 3 for a hour and then reactivate line 3s s4 and then activate the g4 on line one via verizons online service?

This is news to me but I'm not exactly on the cutting edge of info nowadays. Maybe someone else on the thread can comment. Either way good luck to you!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was trying to change the amount of minutes on the plan from 1400 minutes to 700
Still haven't activated the new phone just in case.
Also would changing the minutes have any effect on the unlimited data plan at all?

Thanks!

Edit - Sorry for the constant questions, but is there a recommended time period we should wait between ordering and activating new phones from Bestbuy for each individual upgradable UDP line?
