[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It's over on slick deals but, it was always my understanding that you can't trade an upgrade to a phone that already has an upgrade on it

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

As long as you remove the SIM that ships with the iPhone, you do not need to activate it.

Thanks, that's what I thought. There was a fellow Android Central reader on Swappa who sold for a quick sale and actually mentioned what the whole deal was in his listing. One of the things he did was put the SIM in the iPhone and made a call. He had me worried that maybe I should do the same, but I figured I would check with you first.

Thanks...will continue to proceed with my sales as is.

That is correct. You can only transfer an upgrade to a line that does not already have an upgrade.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Does this work if you do store pick up or only if you have it shipped to you?

It's generally advise not to do in-store pick up as there is always a chance that a rep may screw things up. If you are doing the true Best Buy Method, you are better off shipping the phone home. A transfer upgrade is possible, but it is definitely a YMMV situation. Claiming the phone is a gift may work, but no promises.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It works for store pick up only if your Best Buy allows you to leave with the device unactivated. The policy seems to vary by store but generally they will let you. Just claim it's a gift.
Let's assume that I do buy a subsidized phone and that Best Buy doesn't allowed me to walk away under the gift pretense how long do I have to wait in order to order online ship home....

Just regular shipping, I got the phones within 2-3 days...and the phones came from Alaska (not kidding.)

I would just get them shipped and call it a day. The phones are insured and plus before the phones are shipped out, Verizon has already updated your lines with a contract on your line(s).

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

...... Whatever you do, do not do the Best Buy method through Verizon.

I'm curious why you say that. I've transferred upgrades and completed the process on the Verizon website. Is there a nuance to the Best Buy method that I'm not considering? I thought it was the same; transfer the upgrade, order phone, and either toss the SIM or activate on a TDP line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

What's the best route here?

5 Lines:
Line 1: UDP - upgrade available, contract ends 1/2/16, uses 12gb/mo on average
Line 2: TDP - in contract until 3/26/16, needs a new phone
Line 3: TDP - upgrade available
Line 4: TDP - upgrade available
Line 5: TDP - under contract, no upgrade available

Plan to get a Moto X Pure Edition soon for the UDP line, so no need for the upgrade. But would like to extend contract to avoid the additional $20/mo for UDP. Can I transfer the upgrade to Line 2 and activate the phone on Line 2 without losing UDP on Line 1? Or, will that force Line 1 off into a TDP?

I really don't know. But it sure would be cutting it close to 11/15 if you need to beat that date.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

With the old Alltel plans, it's tough to say whether you will see an increase. The easiest way to tell is by looking at your bill. Is the data portion being billed separately from voice and text? If so, then you'll see an increase.

With that said, the Flying Arrow Method isn't really applicable unless you are trying to get Line 1 a new phone. That method consists of ordering the phone a different line wants and upgrading directly on the new line. In other words, you would use Line 2's upgrade and activate the new phone directly onto Line 1.

My advice would be to just do the Best Buy Method on Line 2. That's the easiest way.

We are trying to get a new phone. My wife wants my iPhone 6 that is currently on UDP Line 1.

I'd take her UDP Line 2 upgrade and get a new phone.

My thoughts were do the Flying Arrow and then just switch the current Line 1 iPhone to Line 2 once the PEO falls off.

Does that change anything, or would you still recommend the Best Buy method?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So both of my lines have UDP.

Line 1 is in contact until 11-28-2016 (I used the Best Buy method last Black Friday to get a GS5 for $1)
Line 2 is available for upgrade

I would like to keep my UDP price down, without the upcoming price increase. I have been reading that the Best Buy method still works. But when I am trying to buy my phone the very first message that comes up says "There's a change from Verizon Wireless for unlimited data plans.
Verizon Wireless has ended this plan option, so when you upgrade you'll be switched to their most common 2GB plan by default."
I would upload a screen shot, but I haven't posted enough on here.

So... Do I dare try and fail, and then have to fight to get my unlimited data back?

On another note I want to get the Turbo 2, but it says it isn't available for shipping. And from what I know about the Best Buy method is you have to have it shipped. So I figured I would go with the V10 if the Best Buy method still works.

The V10 shows it's available for shipping but when I go through the process it only is allowing me to pick up in store. Am I missing something to be able to ship it or is the shipping availability an error on the website?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Another best buy method success story to report. No line transfers on mine though, a little easier than most people I think. Cut my card down with the Noosy brand cutter from Amazon (after much anxiety, I must admit), a little sanding to make it fit, and it worked like a champ. VZW website confirms new contract date and still UPD. Thanks so very much for the help!!!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey dusoccer10,
We have 2 UDP lines, mine and my moms, 1 TDP my brothers line. I believe my mom is L1, myself L2 and my brother L3. Last time I did this through verizon, I transferred my upgrade to my brother and ordered a G2. Phone arrived to my house, trashed the SIM that came with G2 and never lost my UDP. Verizon's website looks a little different from last time so I am weary to go too far with the transfer and upgrade process. I guess that I'm confused as whether to log into Verizon, transfer my moms upgrade to my brothers line, or to log into BestBuy and transfer her upgrade through BB. I'm not sure if it even makes a difference how I do it.

Transferring an upgrade is a different story. I'm talking about the straight Best Buy method where you upgrade directly on the unlimited line through Verizon's system and use your old SIM. Verizon is known to automatically move you to a tiered plan by going this route.

Just transfer the upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2 and order the new phone. When it arrives, it is safe to activate on Line 2. This will extend Line 1's contract and give Line 2 a new phone. The unlimited plan will be safe.

In this scenario, make sure that Best Buy resets everything before leaving the store. Then, when you get home, just upgrade online and have it shipped. Usually, your contract will show as being extended in about 24 hours.

It doesn't make a difference whether you use Best Buy or Verizon. Either way, you have the process correct.

I think because they are doing an offer to get a free 24" TV. I was noticing that also. I am torn on trying that and then doing like somebody posted earlier today about when you go in to pick it up, saying it is a gift and getting them to not activate it.

Otherwise I was thinking about getting the S6, which ever one is the same price as V10 and then going back to the store to do an exchange for the V10. (Lots of memory, removable battery, and SD card! Winner, winner, chicken dinner) and there is an offer from LG for a 200gb card, x-tra battery and dock charger for buying the V10. I really wish they carried the new Nexus 5x at Best Buy. The first Nexus 6 is too big for me. The 6p would be better, at least it is newer tech.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Last year I broke my note 3 taking the vzw case off of it (case pulled out volume rocker with it.) I got an Asurion replacement.

Why do I mention this?

I explained to my wife how this procedure would work and that I would tie up her iphone 6plus for a couple of hours doing the activation in her tdp through using her sim. Guess what kind of case she has on her beloved 6plus?

Anyway it's off now because she rightly questions my ability to take of her case , do the sim swap, second sim swap, put her case back on without breaking her iphone. Sadly, I am all thumbs and it is a fair probability.

Anyway..great thread and thanks for all the help but looks like I'll be paying the $20 and keeping the Note 3. Ugh.
