[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'll let you know when but I will have to wait until 10/10 when my Note 3 comes. But that one I'm sure will go on directly because it's coming from an upgrade on a dumb phone on a separate account so may not prove anything.

Therein lies the rub; that is my situation as well. I am hoping those getting LG G2s, HTC Ones or enen iPhones will be alternate upgrading between now and then reporting back that this method is still good. I will give it a shot thst day also as I really want that Note 3 on my unlimited. But will most likely stick with traditional until I see for sure that I can pop that bad boy directly on my UL.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

On another forum people also had to choose a data plan for a dumb phone line via online BUT once they called csr they were able to activate the dumb phone line without data.

Did they say why it is like this now? Have the discontinued no data on dumb phones. Has anyone called Verizon to see if this is a chance in available basic phone plans?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok. So another question..... I was going to choose to bill my account when I order my phone...Do you think doing that may complicate things with regard to switching the phone around?

I think this question got lost in the sea of posts........ When I refer to Bill My Account, I am not speaking about the Payment Plan.... I am speaking about how when you order online and have it shipped, you can select to Bill Your Account and the charges will appear on your next billing cycle. I was just wondering if anyone who successfully did 'the switcharoo' to keep unlimited had done the Bill to Account payment option and if so, did it cause any issues with 'the switcharoo' and keeping unlimited?

From what I read, I believe it is better to pay for the phone outright. It might cause confusion when trying to switch back to the dumb phone.

Easy guys. Just make a call. They WILL take the data plan off the basic phone. Their online system has been forcing data plans for a while now (it's happened to me for at least a year). Once you call, they will actually put a "data block" on that line so that your dumb phone can't accidentally use data either.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Single line unlimited data here. I have an appt with my corporate sales rep tomorrow to add a 2yr/$10mo dumbphone line and buy/swap a subsidized G2 to primary. He assured me that it's a done deal and the unlimited line will remain as is, unlimited with 3mos of contact remaining.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm trying to re-activate the dumb phone on the dumb phone line and it seems to be requiring me to pick a data plan. I'm getting: View attachment 83062
I thought reverting to previous no-data would be presented as an option?

I selected 75 MB and called to take it off and it seems to have worked. I couldn't get it off without calling.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So just to make everything clear, buy the new phone on a dumbphone line, activate the new phone there, put the dumbphone back on the line, activate new phone on unlimited line, and call to cancel the data package on the dumbphone line?

Yes indeed

Good deal. As soon as Costco stocks their G2s I'll be all over one.

Denied! Due to the individual plan, I'd have to change to 700 shared @ +$30/mo. If you've already got a family share (not everything) plan, the +$10 option is definitely valid.

He mentioned that an Edge line would be cancelable without ETF after 6mos.?

I bailed to ponder options again, no G2, no account changes.

Yes you could add a line and put a basic phone on there paying $10/mo and let a child, parents, in-law who doesn't need a smartphone use it. Or if you have a relative on a basic phone that doesn't care to upgrade and doesn't care about smartphones (older parents, in-laws) use their upgrade to get a smartphone and put it on your unlimited account. Or buy a smartphone off Craig's list or eBay.

Point is, because I didn't already have a shared plan I am obligated to move to one in order to add the $10 line, and that move adds additional monthly cost as well...which ultimately make it cheaper to buy the phone at full retail rather than subsidized along with supporting a 2nd line for 2 years.

Or am I missing something?

Should be able to just add another individual line and not have to combine them into a shared data plan. If you go to a shared data plan with your unlimited line you'll lose unlimited data. Just add another individual line to get a smartphone and then put a dumb phone on there to drop the data charges to get the price down to $10 / mo. This is assuming you have a dumb phone to put on there.

In addition to what dss2000 said to you, getting a phone with the dumb phone method is cheaper than buying phone outright. $10 x 24 is $240. Note 3 is $300. (Or cheaper) 300+240 is 540. Buying a Note 3 is 900 (or is it 800?)

In short, you come out ahead, even with upgrade fees and the like.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Several reps have now told me that you can't just add a line to an individual plan... it had to be converted to a multi-line (family) share plan (which does not alter data or contact end date, but does add cost beyond the $10 line charge. My 450min single line costs $40/mo. The smallest shared minutes plan is 700min/2 lines for $70mo. ($30 x 24) + $200 subsidized device > $600 unsubsidized. When it was a $10 up charge, the math worked better.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Yeah I see what you're saying. I do have a family plan with the 700 minutes. I added two basics just to have two upgrades.

Actually debating whether to use the one extra upgrade to get an iPhone so I can see to an iSheep. Brand new iPhone at very top dollar is quite tempting and would help pay off my Note 2 that I got through Device Payment Plan.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

HELP.... So, I ordered my new G2 this morning online (to save the $60) and picked it up in the store. It was ordered as an upgrade to my Mom's dummyphone line. They would not let me leave the store without activating the phone, even after telling them that it was my mom's phone and I can't have her be without a working phone until I plan to see her tomorrow. So, what they said they could do for me and what was done was the following...... they activated the G2 on her line, and then changed the device back to her dumbphone so I think they may have done the first step of this whole loophole thing for me? They told me when I take the phone to her tomorrow to activate it again on her line, it may not work because they didn't get an option to select reusing the SIM card so I may need to go back into a VZW store tomorrow to get a new SIM card???? I got home and it shows that her line having her dumbphone and it shows her line is no longer eligible for upgrade. .... So now what? Do you think it is now safe for me to switch devices on my unlimited line to the G2? And am I going to have an issue with the SIM card (my current SIM is a different size)?

Just activate it on your unlimited line, good chance you don't need a new SIM.

If you have a micro SIM you can pretty easily just cut it to a nano SIM. Just make sure to follow directions on a myriad of sites out there and it'll work just fine.
