[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

If you have a micro SIM you can pretty easily just cut it to a nano SIM. Just make sure to follow directions on a myriad of sites out there and it'll work just fine.

The G2 on Verizon has a micro SIM.

Just activate it on your unlimited line, good chance you don't need a new SIM.

It seems as though everything went thru ok..... Had to use the SIM that came in the G2 ... Was able to switch devices on my unlimited line - still shows as unlimited and no data plan showing up on the dummyline I used for upgrade..... So I think all is good! THANKS to everyone that has helped me! :D

For better or worse, going to buy myself a G2 now that the VERIZON30 coupon code works again for me. Wish me luck!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Little bit confused.

When new iPhone 5s arrives.

The activation instructions say to call this 1-877 number to activate. When the telephone prompt says which number to agree to the contract. Do you punch in the unlimited lines phone number?

Or can't u just turn on the iPhone 5s and it will activated itself on the tiered data line?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Interesting article. Also reinforces why we're so obsessed with keeping unlimited data:

Verizon and AT&T?s data caps have made LTE a waste of money
Verizon, AT&T LTE data cap criticism: waste of money | BGR

To me it just reads as somebody else complaining about Verizon, in this case also AT&T included. You think of Sprint and T-Mobile had the same great system they wouldn't do the and things?

If Sprint or T-Mobile were the only providers probably but competition and free markets could drive down cost. Hopefully T-Mobile will build out their 4G with money they got from AT&T so there will be some real competition. But what really irks me is that the FCC should have set an LTE standard that all phones would work with. Carriers are leasing the public airways, these radio spectrums belong to the people not a monopolistic cell phone carrier but they use incompatible standards to perpetuate the monopoly. We only allow them to lease the spectrum. What if GM leased public land to build roads that would only work with GM cars? The government should lease the land on the condition that all cars can ride on them for the public good and to encourage free market competition.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I've read through virtually all of this thread and have not seen my situation: I have four smartphones on a Family plan, all with unlimited data, all with an upgrade available.

Although I understand the basics of keeping unlimited on one line when you have one other dumb phone line on your plan, I'm confused about how you get a new subsidized smartphone on multiple lines without multiple other lines/upgrades. My wife doesn't use much data, so I'd be willing to lose unlimited data on her line, and put her on the tiered plan after she upgrades, but how can I use her upgrade multiple times (effectively) to get new subsidized smartphones on the other three lines and keep unlimited data on all three? Maybe what I'm trying to do can't be done. Similarly, if I added another dumb phone line to my plan, how do I (or can I?) use that one new line to end up with new subsidized smartphones on the other four lines, keeping unlimited data on all four?

You must not have read very good. All you have to do (of putting tiered on her line) is upgrade her line. After that transfer a unlimited line upgrade to hers, get the phone activate on hers then put her phone back on and the new phone on the unlimited. Rinse and repeat as many times as you want (for all phones).

If you want to add a dumbphone then do that. Then repeat the transfer of upgrades the same as above for all phones.

Thanks. I guess it's the transfer of upgrades part that was not clear to me. I now understand that I can transfer the upgrade from each of the other three unlimited lines to the fourth line and go through the process multiple times. So does this mean that the "upgrades" available on the unlimited phones are, in a sense, "used up" each time you go through the process of transferring and using them on the fourth line? If so, if I did this, ending up with one line with tiered data, and three still with unlimited data, I would have no upgrades left on any of the four lines, correct? I get it that on the fourth line (my wife's) I would have upgraded it, using up the upgrade on her line first, and signing a new two year contract, but with the other three unlimited lines, even though I'm just activating a new smartphone one these lines, I'm not signing a new two year contract, I'm just effectively continuing on month to month? So if I've "used up" all four upgrades by this method, when will I be eligible for an upgrade again on the three unlimited lines?

When you transfer the upgrade it extends the 2 year contract on the line that is donating the upgrade. But by transferring it you don't lose the unlimited data. So after you do this 4 times all you 4 phones will have contract extended 2 years.

OK. Thanks for the insight. This might not be a fair question for this thread, but does anyone know how having one line with tiered data (say 2GB), and three other lines with unlimited, will affect my current monthly bill (not counting the cost of the subsidized phones)? Will it increase my monthly bill, or should it stay the same?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey guys. I got some great advice on this thread about ugrading both my wife's and my unlimited plans. I was going to knock her down to a 2 GB tiered since she doesn't use much data and then switch my upgrade to her line and have her activate it and deactivate it and then use it on my line keeping my unlimited in place. I called sales at Verizon online and they guy told me that I could just have my wife order the upgrade online and choose the 2GB tiered plan but when the phone arrives make sure that she doesn't activate it and I can take the phone and first activate it on my existing line and since she didn't activate it her plan won't change. Then when she wants to upgrade her line. I use my upgrade to order her ohone online and do the same thing. Choose the new 2GB tiered plan and when the phone arrives I make sure not to activate it on my line and just have her activate it on her line, thus my unlimited won't change since I never activated the phone on my line. Both lines contracts will extend for another two years but our unlimited data won't change since we never activated the new phones we ordered on the line we order the upgrade on. I asked him repeatedly if this would keep our unlimited plans in place and he assured me it would. I just want to check on this forum if this sounds correct and if anyone has ever tried this. It would be great if this worked since we would both get to keep our unlimited data.

Thanks. I guess it's the transfer of upgrades part that was not clear to me. cc1995 mentioned a method above that I haven't verified and we haven't heard back from cc1995 and seems too good to be true that might work to keep all your unlimited lines and upgrade all your phones. But again haven't been verified. But if you're planning on sacrificing an unlimited line anyway it might be worth a shot. Since the new data plan doesn't kick in on a line until you activate a line you activate it on another line and the data plan just drops away. So if you order the upgrade on your wife's line and then when it comes don't activate it on her line, just pop the SIM from one of the unlimited lines in it and the new phone is on the unlimited line.

Thanks. I did read that post in the thread, but it seemed to go against what many other people were saying to do, and was never verified, so I figured it was misinformation and "too good to be true". Can anyone else put any credence to the method cc1995 discussed?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hmmm.....I'm wondering....

If EVERY line is eligible for an upgrade, does this mean I could upgrade every line, and start selling some new phones AND keep unlimited? Is Verizon really throwing us a solid??
