[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The line donating the upgrade will receive the contract extension and the line receiving the subsidized device initially will be the one forced to choose a tiered data plan.

The line receiving the upgrade from the donator line will keep the same upgrade date and contract end date.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So my line(the unlimited) will get the 2 year extension while the other line(nonunlim) will keep the same contract as it always had??

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Okay i think i got it, I have 1 Unlimited data and one 4GB/Month phone.

1st...I go to verizon and transfer my upgrade to the 4GB/month phone.
2nd..I choose the phone I want and activate it on 4GB line.
3rd... Reactivate old phone from the 4GB line which will automatically deactivate the new one right?
4th... Then have them switch the new phone to my unlimited line and good to go

So from what i understand the unlimited line will get the 2 more years while the 4gb/month phone will continue its regular contract.

Sound about right??? ohh and when I choose a new phone on step 2 do i have to choose a data plan? or no because that line already has one?? Thanks!!!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Wanted to post my story in this forum too. As of today 3/28/13 I still have unlimited data. I call called verizon to make sure like everyday but never told them what I have done. Just said I was curious about my account.

Today 3/23 I upgraded using my upgrade on my unlimited data line by following the steps listed in this forum. I DID NOT CALL AHEAD OR GO IN THE STORE. I simply did the transfer upgrade via verizonwireless.com and I picked a dummy line that was already on my account to move the upgrade to. I bough the a S3 only and did the instore pick up option. It was ready in 30mins. They did not ask question and even gave my a extra sim card because i asked (didnt say my intentions). I then called verizon customer service to show that the transfer line still had unlimited and the dummy line i transfered it to now had the s3 and a 2gb data plan. I will drop the data plan later in my 14 once i am a 10000000% sure i made it clear. I moved the S3 to my unlimited line with no problem.

I NEVER TOLD A VERIZON REP WHAT I DID OR WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I DID IT. I DONT NEED THEM LOOKING INTO MY ACCOUNT ASKING QUESTIONS.

My unlimited data line now has a contract date end date of 2015. My dummy line contract was not affected at all.

Exactly. And we don't want them reporting this loophole to corporate so that they close it.

This is the procedure. I would try to do as much of this online as possible like the poster above.

When you reactivate the old phone back onto the 4GB line, it will automatically deactivate the new phone.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Does anyone know what happens to a grandfathered unlimited plan with a smartphone if I swap the phone out for a mobile hotspot or a tablet? Will I lose the unlimited data? Will the monthly price of $40 be reduced to the tablet price of $10/month. If later I want to put a smartphone back on it will I be able to and still have unlimited data?

You can swap the sim card out to any 4GLTE device and maintain unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE. Unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE is only for smartphone plans. Even if you switched the sim card out to a tablet, you would still have to pay for voice and data, if you want to keep unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE. You can switch to a tablet plan, but you would lose unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE. So long as you maintain the unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE plan, you can switch back to a smartphone anytime and maintain unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE. Once you are off unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE, you only have a short time to change back to it. After that time period, you will lose unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE forever on that line

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Any chance this can be dumbed down for me? I want to make sure I'm doing it right.

Currently on a Family Share Plan (Not Share Everything)
1 smartphone (unlimited data @ $30) - HTC Droid Incredible
4 basic phones (no data)

I want to upgrade the HTC Droid Incredible to a Samsung Galaxy S III without losing the unlimited data

I'm just a little nervous about losing it if I do it wrong.

Thanks in advance,

Which lines are ready for an upgrade?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

All except one of the basics.

1. Upgrade one of the basic lines that is eligible for an upgrade to the S3.
2. You will have to chose a data plan, chose 2GB.
3. Activate the S3 on the 2GB line.
4. Reactivate the basic on the 2GB line - chose pay per use for data
5. Go into a Verizon store with your S3 and tell them you want to replace your Incredible with the S3 on your unlimited data line - this will require a a new SIM card for the S3 - you could alternatively order the new SIM card online and when it arrives, do the activation online

It may be that the Incredible's SIM will work in the S3, idk, someone else who knows more about that would have to respond. But if it doesn't, then you can get them free at a VZW store or order online.

The result will be that the contract on the basic line you upgraded will be extended 2 years and the upgrade for that line will be 20 months from the date you upgraded.

There is another way to do it by transferring the upgrade from the unlimited data line to the basic line that is not yet eligible for the upgrade. That is more complicated (and perhaps more risky but others here have been successful doing it) and will result in the unlimited data line's contract being extended 2 years and the next upgrade on the unlimited line being 20 months from now. Here is how to do that:

1. Transfer the upgrade from the unlimited data line to the basic line that is not yet eligible for an upgrade (this can be done online)
2. Upgrade to an S3 on that basic line
3. Activate the S3 on that basic line and choose a 2GB data plan
4. Reactive the original basic phone on the 2GB line and choose pay per use for data
5. Go into a Verizon store and get a new SIM card for the S3 (or order it online) for the unlimited data line
6. Activate the S3 on the unlimited data line

Again, maybe the Incredible's SIM card would work in the S3, idk. But if not, the SIMs are free at the VZW stores and online.

Would this also work if I bought though a 3rd party (like Wirefly) as they do not require you to change your plan when purchasing. (just the data)

Some of the 3rd party's have a $400 fee if you change data plans or switch the phone to another line after you upgrade. So check on that.

I am pretty sure that Best Buy doesn't but Walmart and Amazon do. Check to see if Wirefly does.

Think I found it:

By accepting this Instant Savings Discount, you agree to repay $200 of this discount ($400 for smartphones, tablets, and netbooks) and authorize us to charge your credit card in repayment of this amount if, you signed up for a 2 year agreement and during the 181 days after your new equipment is activated, your wireless carrier notifies us that the services you purchased have been suspended, disconnected, or deactivated, or if you return your purchase outside of the return and exchange provisions of our Satisfaction Guarantee.

Other than simply deactivating a line we?ve activated, your wireless carrier could notify us that you deactivated if:

You fail to pay the carrier in accordance with their terms and conditions
You transfer equipment we activate on one line to another carrier line, even within the same account
You activate this equipment on a new line of service with your current carrier and use it to replace an existing line by deactivating the existing line.

Guess I better stick to Verizon store/website!

Okay still confused on one thing, when i use the upgrade on the 4GB line, what data plan do i choose? the 2GB one or the 4GB which it currently has?? Thanks

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

This also means that one of the lines is stuck without actually being able to upgrade, right? (If I understand correctly, whichever one I use to originally upgrade will have to be "reactivated" with original phone after transferring S3 to unlimited data line)

If you go with the first method, you will have used that basic line's upgrade and so that basic line won't be able to upgrade again for 20 months.

If you go with the second method, that basic line's upgrade will still occur at the same time it would have had you not transferred the upgrade from the unlimited data line. So the second method is the better way to go.

keep the 4GB plan it currently has. Your situation is different because you have 2 smartphone lines.

I only suggested choosing the 2GB plan when you are dealing with a dumbphone line to handle the upgrades. The reason I did is because that is the cheapest plan and there will be a prorated charge for data until you get around to switching the basic phone back onto the line.
