[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

SO I could realistically get the DNA now...and when the S4 comes out transfer my update from my unlimited line and get that as well?

Yes.

depends on whether or not Verizon closes this loophole by then or not. So no guarantees. Verizon can stop you from transferring an upgrade at any time. So far it seems to be working but who knows what will happen tomorrow.

Do we have tp have a Dummy line? If we dont, will your method not work?

You have to have a line that either currently does not have unlimited data on it or that you are OK with it losing unlimited data. Or you can add a line to an existing family plan and it will have tiered data plan on it until you switch the new phone and put a dumbphone on it.

Actually, I just went to Costco, did an alternate upgrade, the guy new exactly what was going on and did it all right then & there for me. Said something like, "we're not really supposed to do this," which I take to mean Verizon discourages helping customers to do it, but does not actually forbid it.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Exactly, or effectively the same thing in a one-step process.
Just be sure and keep checking your line to make sure the system doesn't switch you off unlimited. If it does, you have 14 days to get it switched back so be vigilant. And don't take "no" for an answer.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just want to confirm that OP worked flawlessly this evening. Used an upgrade for LG Dare on another "dumb" line to an unlimited line, now running a GS3.

I ordered the phone directly from verizon. Did not have to call anyone at Verizon for any of the process, did it all via my verizon portal. I would recommend doing a factory reset of the new smartphone *after* you have deactivated it from the "dumb" line.

I just set a calendar reminder to check back on my verizon in a few days juuuust to make sure the unlimited plan sticks around. :)

Awesome!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It works, I just did it. Upgraded my mother in laws phone which is on our family plan. Then switched the phone numbers. Gotta keep unlimited data. :)

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just want to make sure I understand....,

I want to upgrade my unlimited data phone (line 1) but I'm not eligible for an upgrade yet. So I can use a dumphone line (line 2) and order the phone at the subsidized price through that line. Then when I get the new phone activated on line 2, then activate the dumphone back to line 2, and then activate the new phone to line 1 and still keep unlimited data??

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Does anyone know what happens to a grandfathered unlimited plan with a smartphone if I swap the phone out for a mobile hotspot or a tablet? Will I lose the unlimited data? Will the monthly price of $40 be reduced to the tablet price of $10/month. If later I want to put a smartphone back on it will I be able to and still have unlimited data?

yes, you got it right.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

In order to deactivate the dumphone (line 2), do I have to take it into a Verizon store?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I meant in order to REactivate the dumphone, do I have to go into a Verizon store?
No, you can do it online. Go to Verizon Wireless, sign into your account, go to My Verizon, Activate or Switch a Device. Then you choose the line and it will automatically in the system have saved the dumbphone's info since the dumbphone was on that line before.

Do you need that line for a tablet? I'm pretty sure the unlimited stays on the line only if a smartphone stays on the line, so what you are describing would likely cause you to lose unlimited.

Call VZW and ask, but my guess is you would lose unlimited on the line.

yes, you got it right.

Never tried it, but have seen several threads on other sites, so take it with a grain of salt, but the LTE sim in your phone will fit, assuming it is 3ff a MIFI or tablet.

Verizon's agreement when they purchased the 700 band prohibits infringing upon customer's right's to swap devices....(have yet to confirm this)

However, there are those that have taken the 4g sim from their phone and put that same sim in their tablet or mifi and been able to get service. During the time their sim is in the tablet or mifi, they have their calls forwarded to another line.

Assuming this works, that would be the best way to keep your unlimited data and add a mifi. When you are finished with the mifi, simply put the sim back in your phone.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Have a quick question! Ill be doing this method this week and need some clarification:

There is two lines on my family plan..1 unlimited and 1 non-unlimited..

My line the unlimited one is up for an upgrade and the other isn't. I understand all the steps and stuff but what about contracts? My understanding was that if you used an upgrade, it meant a renewed contract for 2 more years. So which line will get the new contract and what will happen with the upgrade for the non-unlimited?
