[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I received my Galaxy Note 3 today and it's the best phone ever, but that's besides the point. I had a CSR activate it for me since I didn't have the other phone in hand. He said I void my warranty by doing it this way, but I'm not sure how true that is. Anyways he successfully helped with this loophole and he said it's not going be around for that much longer.

True, warranty and insurance are both tied to devices and are portable across lines. Warranty exists even if you never activate it.

If you're working online there is a place for you to input the SIM #, so you should be able to do it without getting a new SIM card just by swapping which ones are on which lines at a time, etc. If any issues you can contact customer support for them to sort out the SIM issue.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Is this still the case that only buying at Best Buy and Costco allows one to avoid the secondary termination fee?

Yes, but the phone is not fully activated unless you put the SIM in and fire it up. Maybe that's not necessary, but the original instructions do not mention any SIM details, so we're left to guess our way through it. For me, I had a smartphone with unlimited data and a dumbphone, both of which were upgrade eligible. I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S4 at Costco, and activated it on the dumbphone line on the VZW website. Maybe I didn't need to put the SIM in, but the instructions on the website indicated that the phone was not fully activated yet. So after that was activated, including the 2GB data plan, I switched the line back to the original dumbphone. For some reason, a minimal $10/month data plan was required. I later cancelled that with telephone support.

Then, I activated the S4 on my unlimited line. The website said to put my *old* SIM in the new phone, which I did. At that point, it activated itself. I checked My Verizon and indeed, the smartphone line had unlimited data (YEA!), but oddly enough, the upgrade was deducted from the smartphone line. I don't really care, I kept my unlimited data, and for that I extend my humble thanks to the OP!

What is the old Sim...is it the new one that came with your s4?

You're dealing with two, the micro SIM from your Razr and the nano SIM from the iPhone. You'll activate the iPhone on the dumb phone line with the nano SIM in it, then reactivate the dumb phone on that line (can be done easily on line). Then you'll activate the iPhone with the nano SIM on the Razr's line, which will require you to input the SIM information when activating it.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was under the impression that the Sim is tied to the line that the phone was activated on and once that phone is deactivated the Sim is too. Are u sure this works? I don't want to call customer service tonight

Yes, I did it with my Moto X in September. The SIM is tied to the IMIE loosely, but it can be transferred from one to another.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Did it again with my Galaxy Note 3. The only thing I had to call for was to cancel the $10 data plan that was put on the dumb phone when I reactivated it. Easy peasy.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok, so here's what i've done so far:
- Plan: Nationwide family w/2 lines, one mo 2 mo, the other one expires on dec, both with unlimited data, both eligible for upgrade
- Started off by buying a dumbphone off ebay. Then went to the store and a added a line month 2 month (which i couldn't do online, and they had to call customer service as my plan is really old)., activated the phone.
- Tried transferring upgrades, but as that line is not on contract, had to make it a contract line
- Went to bestbuy, used the dumbphone's upgrade and bought an LG G2 (asked them to price match the verizon30 coupon, quite painful but in the end they did, so i got it for $139.99 instead of $199.99), with contract
So far so good. Unfortunately the wife wants an iPhone 5s. So step 2:
- VZW online now shows me 2 upgrades available (from the ULD lines).
- Started upgrade on dumbphone line, clicked on transfer upgrade from one of the ULD lines
- Checked out w/iPhone 5s (Won't ship until Oct 28)
- Nowhere to be found was the relationship to the ULD line number (after I transferred the upgrade)
- Sent the order, paid (for some reason BTA was gone now!)
- Got the email confirmation FROM THE ULD LINE, showing 2 gb data. HOWEVER, my vzw account still shows it as ULD. I guess until I activate the phone any changes won't be applied.
- Wait until the phone arrives.

As I've read in this thread, the info w/the phone should show which line it's going to modify. If it still wants to take off my ULD on the original line, I'll cancel the transaction (can I?) and go back to ULD. I've been considering the Max(?) 6 GB data for $30, but not really sure, I probably would regret it.

Comments?

Ok we will see if anybody from today on can do it.

I confirm that I did it yesterday. I had an ordeal though, as I went through Best Buy, but if I ever do an upgrade again, I'm going straight to Verizon (though I don't see myself doing it for another two years...even with a second dumbphone.)

I upgraded the basic phone line, after it was upgraded the basic phone was put back on and I then got the Note 3 on my unlimited plan. As other's have said, I would gain a phone line with a 2 year contract AND my Note 3 is on my unlimited with no contract.

I posted a thread with the Note 3 unboxing, and showed the widget with unlimited data...

Notrega, I would highly recommend you return the phone on Device Payment Plan and go to another VZW store. What I would have done differently would have been to order from Verizon directly (and use Verizon 30.) I just wanted the phone right then and there, but it just wasn't worth it to deal with Best Buy employees who don't really care about losing the customer's unlimited data. This is definitely what I'm doing next time.

1) Order over Internet, and upgrading basic line.

2) Activate phone on basic line.

3) Put dumb phone back on basic line via phone call to Verizon, making sure that I don't have data plan, etc.

4) Device swap via swapping SIMs or something to new device.

I dunno what to tell you other this alternate upgrade does work, and I was glad to pay off my payment plan (courtesy of Swappa. :) I got to sell my Note 2 for what was near left of the balance. It's great.

I discussed it with the wife. She said to hell with all of that. She said she did not want my blood pressure to go any higher than it already has and she is happy to pay extra not to have to deal with the headache.

Verizon loves you and the wife.

I'd say something along the lines of "being cute", but I can't do it...however the words "taking" and "it" would be involved in what I would have said...lmao.

I didn't want to deal with the headache either...but I was happy to pay less for my Note 3 than I would have for my Note 2. Money was definitely spent, but I got my unlimited data and the phone is at a cheaper price.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Got my Note 3 late last night after having to drive way out to the damn FedEx facility to get it. But as of this morning went through the whole process of activating on the line I transferred the upgrade to and then reactivating the old phone on that same line, then activating the Note 3 on my unlimited line and everything seems to have gone smooth. Thank you to everyone on here for the help. So happy it worked and it was pretty simple. Anyone not willing to do a tiny bit extra well you are who Verizon loves and I am sure they will enjoy your extra money.
