[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Your dummy phone needs to be a non smart phone. Or you will be stuck with data on the third line.

You have 3 upgrades (new line plus your w existing lines) so you could buy another and sell it or just hold on to that third upgrade.

You can let your father use the third line....You can transfer one upgrade then a few days after you get and active /move the new phone you can transfer another upgrade.

ya, you can hold onto one of the upgrades, but the problem with that is that the new line is for me $13/mo so that's $312 over the 2 year contract. I would rather sell an iPhone 5s and clear $550 - $200 cost to buy the phone - $36 upgrade fee = $314 so that I would break even (except for the tax I paid on the phone, which in my state would be $12) by adding the new line. For me, if I can clear $560 on an iPhone sale, I break even including the sales tax by adding the new line. But every state is different so you have to add it up for yourself.

You should be able to clear $550 on an iPhone 5s after paypal fees, listing fees and shipping fees.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just get a new SIM. There is no problem getting one. You are allowed to put any 4G LTE phone you want to on any line you want to. They can't interfere with that by the terms of their FCC licenses. No one will question you. Just tell them I want to put this phone on this line, I need a new SIM, please give me one, thanks.

DayThyme, just to let you know, I ordered the phone via verizon online and decided to pick it up locally as well as get another new sim card for the phone. My verizon store was not busy at all when I arrived...and my intentions were to just come in, get the phone and sim card, and leave (the phone was paid for via online.) Of course, the sales rep wanted to "save me money and look at my plan." I declined. Then I asked for the sim card and I was almost harassed by two sales people and the manager. They were very invasive and questioning "why do you need it?" etc and I ended up leaving because it was so frustrating. I am going to call in and get a sim card and do everything online. Poor experience at the store. Again, thanks for your help though.

Sorry to hear about that. Keep us posted. The phone reps are nicer IME, too.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all. Thank you for posting very useful information in this thread. I'm currently at the step where I've upgraded the phone on the dumb line and activated it (LG G2). I am trying to reactivate the old 'dumb' phone. When I login to MyVerizon and select activate/switch device there is no option available for the old dumb phone. Can I simply shut off the new G2 and dial *228 from the old dumb phone to reactivate it (and therefore free up the G2)?

Thanks for the help!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You should see a picture of the LG G2. Click on that line and then select activate/switch device. It will ask you if you are activating a phone that has been on your account before. Say yes. Then you will get a drop down menu and it should have the old dumb phone on it. Select it. If it does not have the old dumbphone on the drop down menu, I am pretty sure you will have to call and get them to put the old dumb phone back in their system as associated with your account.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

DayThyme, thanks for the response. I think I may have to call (gasp!). When I select the G2 the next page just asks me if the new device I want to activate is the same G2. No drop down is available.

I think it's actually mixed up with the SIM Cards. There was one pre-installed (ends in 8) and one additional in the box (ends in 1). I activated with the pre-installed, and I had to have a rep switch the system to look for the pre-installed, it was defaulting to the one loose in the box. Now when I try to switch devices it dumps me to a page trying to activate loose SIM (ends in 1).

Bottom line: I will call and have them switch back to old phone, I have all the info for it...I just thought I was missing something! Thanks again

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

How long did you keep your New Smartphone on the basic line?? Because I just upgrade my basic line to the new Iphone5s and I was woundering how long I should keep it on
my basic line, so when can I move it to my unlimted line.:)

You can always add the id code from the old dumb phone as if you are doing it for the first time.

Don't worry about calling either. They really don't care, but don't be too informative. Hate to ruin it for future upgrades.

You can do it anytime.... As long as it is active in that line first.

Thanks Clint. I actually chatted with them online and got the dumb phone reactivated, and the data plan knocked off. I was very sparse with the information ;) . I'll have to continue the process when I get home later, but as of now I'm back to where I was pre-upgrade and now just have to activate the G2 on my line. I'll pop back in with a summary once I have everything going and verified, just in case anyone needs it.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Great news. Adding the G2 should be easy.

Could you just message me, a step by step, detailed guide on how to do everything? I'm stating to understand somewhat but I'm still on confused. I want to know how everything works not just what to do.

This is what I understand so far I think...I go onto vzw.com (could I do this in a vzw store? or say a target or walmart that might have iPhone sales?) I then add a line to my grandfathered plan, I pick any cheap phone, (they have free phones right?) I pick the phone, add data too it and then I get confused from there.

I don't understand why I only need to add 1 line even though I have 2 phones that I need to upgrade? I don't understand why a family member can't use the 3rd line if I'm going to pay $10-18/month for it? Can't the 3rd line just share my 1400 minutes? That way well have 2 iphones and 1 cheap phone using the 1400 minutes? Also, does the additional line have to be a smartphone, a 4g phone or can it just be a cheap or free flip phone? What data plan has to be used? Those are just some of my questions. But a detailed guide would be much appreciated, my contact is up soon and I want to get this done asap but I don't want to screw this up.

Thanks for your time...

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

After your new smartphone is activated on line 2, if the phone that was originally on line 2 has the same size SIM card, just take the SIM card from the new smartphone and put it in the phone that was originally on line 2.

And if the new smartphone has the same size SIM card as the phone you have now on line 1, then put the old line 1 SIM card in your new smartphone.

If your phones have different sized SIM cards, then you need new SIM cards.

DayTime. I tried this same method. I transferred the upgrade from my unlimited line to my sister's line which is a smartphone with 2GB of data. I got the G2 and selected the "pick-up" instore option. When I went to the store, the Verizon Rep said that my contract and NOT my sisters would be affected. In essence I would lose my unlimited data. I chatted with verizon online and they said the same thing. Am I missing something here? I have combed through this thread quite a bit and I came to believe that this method wouldn't make me lose my unlimited.

Thanks for all your help in navigating this process in the forum!

Your contract will be extended 2 years, not your sister's.

In essence I would lose my unlimited data.
No, you will not if you first activate it on your sister's line. I just did this with 2 lines in the last week. The line that donated the upgrade (donor line) is extended by 2 years but the data plan on the donor line is not affected by the upgrade.

If for some reason you find that you lose unlimited, you can return the phone and restore the upgrade. I am not sure how long you have to do this, but I don't think it is long. Search this thread - the answer to how long you have to reverse having unlimited data taken away is in this thread.

I would rather post here so more people can benefit; also i don't want a bunch of PMs from people asking me how to do it.

This is what I understand so far I think...I go onto vzw.com (could I do this in a vzw store?
yes, you can go to a verizon store but they will try to get you to switch to share everything and may tell you this won't work or worse yet, screw with your data plan. Or maybe you will get a nice rep who will know how to do this, it is hit or miss. I can tell you at my verizon store they are absolute male genitalias so I avoid them.

or say a target or walmart that might have iPhone sales?
no, you will have to pay a $400 secondary ETF if you do this anywhere but verizon, best buy and costco.

I then add a line to my grandfathered plan, I pick any cheap phone, (they have free phones right?)
no, you add a line to your grandfathered plan and pick the smartphone that you want, in your case an iPhone.

I pick the phone, add data too it and then I get confused from there.
add a line, pick the iPhone you want and pick the 2GB data plan for the new line. Then activate the iPhone on the new line. Then activate a dumbphone on the new line and drop the data plan - if you don't have a Verizon dumbphone, buy a used one from ebay or amazon. I got a used one for $20. Your new iPhone at the subsidized price is now available to be put on an unlimited data line without losing unlimited data.

I don't understand why I only need to add 1 line even though I have 2 phones that I need to upgrade?
because after you put a dumbphone on the new line you can transfer upgrades to it and repeat the process as many times as you have upgrades.

I don't understand why a family member can't use the 3rd line if I'm going to pay $10-18/month for it?
you can, but buy that person a used verizon dumbphone off ebay or amazon to use on the line rather than wasting the opportunity to buy a $650 iPhone for $200.

Can't the 3rd line just share my 1400 minutes? That way well have 2 iphones and 1 cheap phone using the 1400 minutes?
yes. And if you buy a dumbphone off of ebay, an extra iPhone to sell or you will still have an unused upgrade.

Also, does the additional line have to be a smartphone, a 4g phone or can it just be a cheap or free flip phone?
It can be a cheap or free flip phone but why would you waste the opportunity to pay $200 for an iPhone worth $650? You can sell it and then the 3rd line will pay for itself for 2 years. Or save the second upgrade to use next year when the iPhone 6 comes out.

Or they don't realize this works. At my store they know it works, but they are just awful, hateful people. Seriously, my Verizon reps are the worst.
