I want to thank you guys for the information provided by this thread! I was able to a add a new line to my Family Share Plan and get a subsidised smartphone (LG G2) for $0 out-of-pocket (found the coupon code 'EBATES' online to knock $50 off) today. Prior to adding this line, I had 2 UDP lines and just didn't want to lose it based on principle. I'm fortunate to have a job where they allow us to use our personal phone as work phones and reimburse us each month, so the $9.99/month extra was a no-brainer in my situation.

I do have a question regarding the activation/re-activation process as I have read (or possibly misread) mixed information about what to do with the SIM cards. Here's my scenario:

Line 1 (UDP) - Droid Charge (month-to-month)
Line 2 (UDP) - Samsung Stratosphere (month-to-month)
Line 3 (Tiered) - LG G2 (just added this line today, 2-yr contract)

Line 3 is currently still activated on Line 3. I want to move phones from Line 3 to Line 1, but Line 1 SIM is larger than the Line 3 micro SIM.

Should I, A.) Swing by a Verizon store and pickup a micro SIM for Line 1 or B.) not switch SIM cards and just de-activate Line 3 and activate on Line 1 without switching SIM's?

I thought I've read somewhere that the Plan follows the SIM not the phone.

So I've read this entire thread a couple months ago but I just want to make sure of one thing before I get to far into this. I used an upgrade on a dumb phone and got an S4 from best buy today. I wanted to do all the activations myself, the dumb phone lives two hours away, but the guy said he had to activate it to give me the subsidized price. He said he activated it and then put the dumb phone back onto the newly upgraded line. So my question is should I activate the S4 on the dumb line again just to be sure or just go ahead and transfer the S4 to my UDP line. On my Verizon it shows the S4 as being a phone previously used on this account, I just want to make sure I can put it on the UDP line now. I would be bent if I lost my unlimited lol.

If it shows up in my verizon as a phone that has been used on the account, it has been activated and can be safely activated on the UDP line. Remember to check My Verizon before the 14 day return policy is up. You can always return it and go back to your UDP if there is an issue with your UDP.

I just used the SIM that came with the phone that i bought on the dumb line and then de-activated and re-activated on the UDP line. This does work to keep your UDP. If you have easy access to a new SIM, it wouldn't hurt to get another....NOT sure cost, but it is not necessary to keep UDP for line 1 and 2.

Just make sure that you do the upgrade on the tiered plan, activate the new phone on the tiered plan first, then activate on UDP

Upgrade the 2 dumb phones directly. Then transfer the upgrade from the unlimited line to the non unlimited line and activate the phone on the non unlimited line first

Are you going to keep the 2 dumb phone as is or do you want to get a smart phone and add data?

If you want to keep them as dumb phones the most economical way is to buy a couple iPhones and resell them after activating and buy some dumb phones from eBay for those lines. You can probably find some very good ones maybe even new ones and should profit handsomely.

Hello everyone, I have read a lot of other people's situations and their eventual solutions to them, but I don't understand what to do with mine.

I have a UDP Droid Eris and I have waited to upgrade for some time.
My father just got an HTC One, using his upgrade (dropping his UDP) and just signed on for a 2 year contract and a 2 gb package (bought from Best Buy).
My mother also got her Galaxy S3 not too long ago, also using her upgrade (never had a data plan), signing up for the 2 year contract and 2 gb package as well.
How would I obtain a new phone (looking towards getting a Blackberry Q10) with an upgrade without removing my UDP? I also don't want to raise my monthly bill for the family, if possible.
If I swap my upgrade over to one of their lines then buy a phone, won't I be violating their contract if I activate the blackberry on their line and remove their data package?
I just need someone to walk me through with my situation, please.

Thanks kjf71, Wanted to report back that everything worked out fine. I did indeed use the SIM that came with the newly upgraded phone to activate on my UDP line (I went to Verizon to get a new SIM, but the rep said they would handle the activation instore and couldn't just hand out SIM's - didn't want them knowing what I was doing so I just used the SIM that came with the upgraded phone). However, the first refresh of 'My Verizon' page initially indicated a 'Share Plan 8GB' for the UDP line. Another refresh indicated Unlimited Data - kinda scared me for a moment!

You would be moving your upgrade to their line. When you put their phone back on the line you will keep the 2gb DATA for their phones.

You wouldn't be violating their TOS or adding any cost to your plan.

And when I cancel the new phone on their line, I just activate one of my parent's phones again on their line, then just activate the new phone on my line with no penalties?

How would this work if I have a Droid Bionic, with a SIM card that wouldn't fit in the Samsung Galaxy S4? Or would it...? I really want to try to keep my unlimited data, and I really want an S4, replaceable battery and micro SD support also being important to me. I've been looking at Swappa, but I've never bought a used phone from a stranger online before, (stranger danger!) and I'm a little concerned. The cheapest S4 I've seen on there was $350 for the phone only, no accessories.

I think the key is making sure you get the option to keep unlimited data during the process of buying the phone on the website then using a old SIM card.

You would need to cut the SIM to the micro size using a SIM cutter like this one

Thanks for the replies. I had no idea you could cut the regular SIM card down to fit in a micro sized device. I may look a lot closer at this, but I'm sure as soon as Verizon finds out they will work to put a stop to it. I have no problem extending my contract, I'm on month to month now, my 2 years were up in November last year. I guess the SIM cards are basically universal as long as you're using an LTE phone? And if I ever need to use the Bionic, I guess I can just get another SIM card from a Verizon store.

I just use an adapter whenever I use my rezzy which uses a mini sim. All my other devices like note 3, 2,s3, Droid razr maxx use micro sim.

Well, I ordered a Galaxy S4. $49.99 with 2 year contract, on sale from $249.99. My confirmation email from Best Buy states no changes were made to my calling or data plan. I only have one line with unlimited data, and my 2 year contract with Verizon was up in November last year. I hope everything works out fine, and I did order the SIM card cutter. I've been ready to get something new for a little while now, I like my Bionic, but it just chugs so much anyore!
