[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sorry if this has been discussed, but I read back several pages and didn't see anything. I am on an unlimited individual plan, can I add a plan and not have to move to a share everything plan? I don't mind paying however much the dumbphone costs per month (what is it now?), but I don't want to be forced onto a share everything.

It's not cost effective to convert an individual plan to a family plan. Buying from Best Buy online is a better option. The only phone you can't get doing it that way is the Droid Maxx. Here is the link to that method.

This is from a few post ahead of you...you might be better suited for this

The problem with converting an individual plan to a family plan is the cost. You pay not only the $10 a month line access fee, but if you have unlimited text you pay $30/mo on a family plan instead of $20/mo on an individual plan. That right there brings it to about $25/mo after taxes/surcharges/fees. Over the course of 24 months, it would cost you $600 just for the line access charge and the unlimited texts.

Then there is the issue with the talk minutes. If you can do with the lowest number of talk minutes on a family plan, 700, the base price for 2 lines with 700 minutes and unlimited texts is $100/mo but then you have to pay for your unlimited data too so another $30/mo. And remember, the 700 minute plan does not allow for Friends and Family designations and checking your voicemail eats up your minutes, too. So for the month it would $130/mo for the cheapest family plan with unlimited texts and unlimited data before taxes/surcharges/fees. You can see the price structure of the individual vs. family plans here:

So if I do this my and just ad one line my bill is going to go up about $50 because I have Unlimited text. I really don't plan on using the extra phone. Just looking for a way to upgrade every now and again. Wonder if I should just add the max amount of phones to my plan and eBay/craigslist them to make up the difference. What fees are associated with the upgrade and switching back to the basic plan after upgrading to a smart phone? I also though I read that when you sign up for a data plan you have to keep it for 2 years or pay an early termination fee.

Try the Best Buy method outlined here:

You can't get a Droid Maxx but other phones are available. It likely works on Moto Maker to get a Moto X, too since they use Best Buy's system.

Upgrade fee is $30. New line activation fee is $35, but it is waived right now I think until the 17th. But really, it is not cost effective to convert an individual line to a family plan. Try the Best Buy method.

Not with Verizon, Best Buy or Costco and likely not with Moto Maker. With other retailers, you pay a $400 secondary ETF if you downgrade the data plan within 181 days.

I probably should have did my research more. I called and added a line today... I have 14 days and will have to pay a $35 restocking fee but I will have find out what’s the best way. I'm actually not droid crapping but thinking about getting an iPhone 5. I love my HTC droids just looking to try the other OSs.

I believe if you do not open or activate the phone and cancel the line within 3 days, there is no restocking fee. But call to ask. Even if there is, you can get $30 of it credited back if you just call and complain that there shouldn't be a restocking fee when you don't open or activate the phone.

I love my Moto X!

YW! Moto X is not worth using an upgrade on though, as you can get it off contract on sale for $330 for 16GB or $380 for 32GB. If you want a Moto X, what you do is buy the Moto X off contract on sale, which has been extended to the 22nd, and use the upgrade to buy an iPhone 5s and then sell the iPhone 5s.

Well my upgrade isn't until June I have the HTC ReZound with Clean Rom that I used up until like a month ago. I'm testing out an iPhone 4 that was given to me, but would rather at least have a five because I have pretty big hands/fingers, just the little bit of screen makes texting that much easier. I probably would have stuck with my ReZound if I could've got it to go back to the stock rom. I tried a few times and was scared to brick it. Sorry about going OT. I'll look into the Moto X I haven't been keeping up with all the phones like I used to.

Only get the Moto X off contract on sale.

Get the Verizon Developer Edition for $380 if you are going to get a Moto X so you can unlock the bootloader and root easily. Full 1 year warranty even if you unlock the bootloader. Then you can native WiFi tether for free with just overwriting 1 file. It is so easy it is ridiculous and you keep your warranty. Only thing is you have to revert back to stock to take the OTA for 4.4.2 which is coming out soon. Moto X is great, I love it and it will probably be the one and only Motoroogle flagship device!

Is there anyway I can add a second line to my plan and get unlimited on that as well so I can drop my Jetpack and just use a Moto X?

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon?

Put it up for adoption :) Use the moto X until September when the iPhone 6 comes out, sell the Moto X and with the money you make off of the sale of the iPhone 5s and the Moto X you will be able to pay full retail for an iPhone 6 in September.

I sold the Moto X for $300 off Craigslist. Took a while but at least I got that much. I wonder how long it'll be on sale for at $330. If it goes back up this week I'll angry lol.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Well I haven't accepted the terms of the phone order I placed earlier today. I think with this BB thing going on And the Moto X being so cheap I'm going to call in and cancel the basic line I was trying to add. Curently I'm a single line UDP, 450Min, Unlimted text For about $90 before discounts.
How much will it be for just adding the extra basic line and bumping up to 700 min? ($130?)
End of June I can upgrade.

no one can ever get unlimited data on anything at verizon or att ever again. If you already have it, they let you keep it.

yes, $130 is the minimum. That is $40/mo more than you are paying now before taxes and fees. Not cost effective at all to add a line to an individual account.

What I suggest to you is to buy a Moto X off contract now, sign up for the best buy gift card and then after the iPhone 6 is released, wait to see how best buy prices them on black friday. Between the gift card and the black friday deal, you should get a pretty cheap iPhone 6. Then if you like the iPhone 6, keep it and sell the Moto X.

sale was extended until 2/22/14. You did good. How much is my cut :)

Never buy an Android for resale again. Just iPhones for resale.

What do you mean by sign up for the gift card?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Today is the last day to sign up for the Best Buy Reserve gift card $50

Best Buy Reserve Gift Card

When you buy online, you can't use the gift card toward the purchase of the device I believe but you can get accessories with the gift card when it comes. In store you can get $50 off the purchase of the device since they activate it right there. But of course, to keep your UDP you have to buy online.

It is still a nice deal to get the $50 gift card since there is always something you can buy at Best Buy.

I should add that you can assume liability on someone else's grandfathered UDP line and add that to your individual line. But you have to find someone who wants to sell their UDP line. And I am not sure how it all works with the Jetpacks. If you want to inquire about AOL of a UDP line for a jetpack, please start a new thread. There are posters here who know all about that kind of stuff and they will be more likely to see it if you start a thread about it.
