[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

That's a good idea. I'm going to assume that's their way of trying to activate it from their side so you lose UDP. Maybe I'm wrong. I'd rather pay the 6.19 a piece than risk them screwing all of this up.

It just adds 2 years on the dumb phone line. That is all. The hold rolls off eventually.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

What about the 2-year contract on the dumb phone's line? Did the dumb-phone line which was upgraded become under contract even though you never activated the new phone on it? If so, when did you, from Verizon's perspective, commit yourself to the new contract? The contract had to land SOMEWHERE!

Contract gets extended 2 years when I ordered the phone. The data on the dumbphone line never went into effect. When I looked at my monthly bill on that dumb line I just still see the $9.99 plus taxes for that month, no prorated data. If you can please report back how many days it takes for that pending activation order falls off as others have asked that too. It should be a few days to a week.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Well, took the plunge after reading this thread. Ordered 2 Sammy S4s for around $50 each, upgrading from 2 Bionics. One of among several concerns is cutting up the standard size sim cards to the S4s micro-sim. Anyone have issues cutting up their cards? Please post more success stories. I have not seen any fails, just references to them for using the new sim cards. Any other issues to watch out for? LONG LIVE OUR UNLIMITED DATA!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

So I've been following this thread and decided to put up my experience. I'm from southern california I have UDP I pre-ordered the GS5 last week with "keep existing plan" and it has been shipped reciving it on Monday. I checked *611 on my mobile site and my contract has been extended for two more years with "no changes " I had no problems with any of the steps as of yet.
Will be transferring sim card on Monday will post outcome... Crossing fingers.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey tried reading through this thread but i kind of got confused. I would like to keep my UDP and get the new s5. I currently have the bionic i read something about trimming a sim card. Anways my moms line (iphone 4) has an upgrade available. I was about to order the s5 on her line through amazon. So when the phone comes can i just activate it under my line or would i have to activate it under hers first, and would i need to switch the sim cards?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

So I'm just as nervous as everyone else. So worse case scenario i have to deny it and pay for the phone out right? Besides the chance of losing my UDP.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You have 2 dumbphone lines and 1 unlimited account? You can order an M8 on one dumphone line and then activate it on your unlimited account. You can then order another using the other dumphone line and just don't activate it on that dumbphone line. The data plan will never go into effect. You can either sell it or whatever.

Right but is there a way to activate one as smartphone without a data plan?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I went from a Droid Bionic to a Samsung Galaxy S4 with this method. I had to cut my old Bionic's SIM card to fit in the S4. When I tried to activate on Verizon's site with the old cut SIM in the new S4, I initially got an error type message saying I was using a 3G SIM, and I would have to contact them or request a new SIM. It seemed strange, since the Bionic is most certainly 4G, and the SIM itself had "4G LTE" printed on it.

Anyway, after calling Best Buy, and talking with their rep, they were unable to activate it with my old SIM. At that point I put in the SIM that came with the new phone and it activated with no problems. The included SIM that came with my S4 wasn't already inserted, but was just in with the phone, inside the box.

That was my experience, and I was able to keep my UDP. I think my original post was back on one of the first few pages, and I see 15 pages now!

@mykl376 First, thanks for posting and updating on your experience. I'm doing the exact same deal with 2 Bionics to Samsung S4's.
I'm hoping to replicate the same process as you. So try the cut down Bionic sims which will not work, then try the Samsung micro-sims. It just doesn't make sense to me but I'm going to try and follow every step since it worked for you? Maybe your Bionic Sims were cut incorrectly and the Samsung micro-sims just worked for you? I'm thinking of taking the sims to Best Buy and have them cut it for me. Anything else I need to watch out for? I'm getting nervous now, especially with 2 phones on a family plan- but worst case scenario I can always return the phones and go back to my previous UDPs, right?

Can't you return the phone?

You mean keep a smartphone on a cheap basic phone plan and not use any data and perhaps get your data via wifi? I'm not aware of Verizon allowing that. You'd have to check with Verizon but I doubt it as they see charging people for measured data as a major revenue stream.

You can order an S5 using your mom's line and it should come with a micro SIM but I think the Bionic uses the same micro-SIM as the Galaxy S5. When you get the phone you can just put your Bionics micro-SIM into the S5. If that doesn't work you could try using the SIM that comes with the phone and activate it on your unlimited data account.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

hey all new member here, came across this thread and decided to try it out. I am about to order an S5, my current phone is the Galaxy Nexus. I believe my current phone uses a regular SIM card, does anyone know which size the S5 uses? As for cutting the SIM card, can I just use a pair of sheers? Or does it have to be those type of scissors. Thanks =]

Im coming from the Galaxy Nexus as well. Believe the SIM (4G LTE) will fit without any modification.

Thanks for the quick reply, and that's great news. I will update once I receive the phone. First I need to find out where the rerware folder is to copy over my backups >.>...

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums. I've read pretty much from page 1 onward (awesome info), but I've got a bit of a problem I hadn't seen answered in this thread.

I'm considering upgrading to an HTC One M8 or GalaxyS5, but I've got a 3G iPhone 4s. While I know my phone has a micro sim card like the S5, it's a 3G phone so I've read I'll need a new sim regardless for 4G LTE.

That being said, has anyone had success keeping their UDP switching from a 3G to 4G LTE phone (particularly iPhone to Android) ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, not sure if it matters, but I'm on a family share plan w/ my gf (who doesn't have unlimited data, but has a GS4).

One option, that may be a pain, would be to borrow your gf's phone, have her keep her sim card, take the phone to Verizon, and finally have them activate it and place a new sim card in it for you. Order your new phone and once it arrives, take your sim card out and put it in the new phone. Then your gf should be able to put her sim card back in her GS4.

If you want to buy full retail, use the iconic portal.

I went to my local Vz store and paid full retail. There was no problem keeping unlimited data. She said she knew I would be a grandfathered unlimited data as soon as I said I wanted to pay retail.

Not quite sure I follow as she's already been using her phone for over a year (so it's already been activated). Given the FAQ on the Verizon page, it doesn't look like I can use someone else's sim for a new phone for myself:
