[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi. Hopefully somebody can help. I transferred my upgrade with UDP to my sister's S4 with 2GB data plan and used it to upgrade her phone to an iPhone 5s. I activated the phone on her line first, but when I try to activate the iPhone 5s back to my line and enter the SIM #, I get the message: "The device you're activating is not compatible with your current plan. Please select a Data Plan below." There is no option to keep my current data plan and there is no way to not select a data plan because when I try to click continue, it forces me to select a data plan. Any thoughts? My friend did the same thing I did just last week and didn't get this error message at all..

I am upgrading from an iPhone 4s to iPhone 5s. I got a nano sim from Verizon beforehand, but still encounter this message when I input the SIM #.

Yes I recommend doing it online and avoid talking to Verizon CSR's especially retail store ones who might try to dissuade you. If your old phone on line one uses a nano SIM like an iPhone you can just put it in the M8 when it arrives. If SIM is not compatible you go online, and follow the process to activate the phone on your UDP line. There will be a pending activation on the basic line just ignore it and it will fall off in about a week. You won't be charged data on the basic line because you never activated a smartphone on the data line. And since you never took the basic phone off no need to put it back on.

wow this seems too straight forward. I have a galaxy nexus by the way, I dont think it has a nano SIM, although I can be wrong. One last question, I will still pay the subsidized price, right? I wont ever be charged a penalty or any other remaining phone cost when i activate the phone on line 1? Thanks again for all the help, I really appreciate it!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I will be trying this today phone coming in mail this evening! Going from samsung galaxy nexus to note 3. Question my plan seem to have already been extended and still says unlimited so should I follow the steps stated in the original thread post to activate or just switch the SIMS and turn the phone on? I ask because browsing through the thread some peoples plans were already showing as extended to with the unlimited still there and they just switched the SIMS turned phone on and were done. Should I follow the activation steps anyway just to be sure?

No activation steps needed...just switched the Sims

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hello to all.

Good thread. Promising results for most. I applaud all that have tried and have successfully gotten their upgrade without losing their UDP. Good luck to those who are in between points.

After lurking this thread for a month or so, I decided to give it a whirl. Hesitant still about losing my UDP, I decided to guinnea pig by wife's line (she doesn't burn data like I do) and see how things go.

We both have Galaxy Nexus phones. I successfully placed an order on the BB site (no errors during processing and checkout) using "most" of the instructions detailed in this thread (explanation to follow).

Shortly after checkout out and placing the order, I get an email saying that there is a problem with my mobile order and that I need to call BB and refer to my open case number to have it rectified so that they can complete my order.

Of course, I don't call as I rather not chance the idea of human intervention deviating off the listed method and causing a change in my account.

What happens in the course of the last 8 days are daily emails, telling me to call. Daily phone calls, telling me to call. On just ONE occasion, my son hands me the phone and it was a BB rep. She was nice. She stated that they just needed to confirm my order with Verizon and that I needed to give her my last 4 SS number of the primary and/or my VZW pin/passcode to access my account. I gave her some line that I was in the middle of something and that I would call her back. She acknowledged and we ended the call.

So during this week, I retraced my steps to see if I did something wrong during the order. The ONE thing that deviated from the plan that I noticed was that on my BB account, I have the default shipping address set up to send orders from BB to my office. After reviewing the thread, I can speculate that there may have been as issue with the order NOT being designated to ship to my billing address and that may have created a flag in their system. Theory #1.

Another possibility was the plan that I am on. My wife and I are on an old Family Share 1000 plan with unlimited data. I am the primary. Again, I tried to upgrade her line/phone. Despite choosing to "keep existing plan" on the order, perhaps the system did not want to agree with my old legacy Family Share plan? This is theory #2.

So, fast forward to today. Finally after 8 days of calling and emails, BB finally canceled my order today. Daily checks of my VZW account shows no change to my phones and/or UDP.

My question is...should I wait a day or two and retry to order again? This time being vigilent about synchronizing the ship to address with my billing?

I have also read a post stating that a user successfully upgraded his wife's secondary line on a share plan but unsuccessfully upgrading his. I'd hate to be in that scenario as well.

Anyways, this is my contribution to the story. I'll chew on what my next step will be. For my wife's upgrade, it was to move from her Galaxy Nexus to a LG G2.

Thanks.

I would try again. I'm on a Family Share Plan and I shipped the device to my office (not billing address) with out any issues. It might have just been a funky glitch.

Just swap the sims & power on the device. If you transferred the upgrade to a non UDP line, you may have to activate on the tiered line, then swap the device to the UDP line.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Just an update. So it's been about 2 weeks since I used this method to get my new M8 and I still have my unlimited data! (Been keeping a close eye on it.) I think at this point I'm in the clear. Guess I'll go ahead and sell my S4 now. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread!

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Just an update: this method still works folks. I've been enjoying my M8 for 2 weeks now and I still have my UDP.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Just a quick update. I ordered my M8 last night and my VZW account already shows an extended contract WITH UDP for 2016...sooooo...yay so far!

I ordered my lg g2 last night. Just checked my account and the same thing. Unlimited data. Contract ends 4/ 29 2016

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Add me to the list. Phone hasn't arrived yet but vzw shows contract extended to 4/29/2016 and still UD. Shows the device as still my s3 but maybe when I get the s5 and power on it will change. Don't really care about that though.

Questions:

I want to use an s5 SIM card at some point to try out the ISIS software (virtual wallet). Do you think if I waited a bit then went into verizon and said I lost it or broke the sim or something that would work?

Also, how do I put insurance on it? Geek squad only covers damage. I want to cover loss and theft as well. Anyone have any advice on that?

No it's the subsidized price. It will just extend the contract on the basic phone's line by 2 years but as long as you just have a basic phone on there will only pay the rate of a basic phone about $10/mo.

Did you put your sisters phone the S4 first on her line and take the iPhone 5s off to free it up?
From my experience when activating the phone on an UDP line you will get the message that it is "not compatible with current plan" but you click OK and show the data plans to select if you look carefully the unlimited plan is one of them, be sure to scroll to the left and right because it might be hidden.

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

This worked for me. I ended up switching from a note 2 to the nokia lumia icon (windows phone) to give something new a try. Everything worked perfectly. I just cut down my micro SIM to a nano SIM, popped the SIM into the phone, powered up, and voila. Everything works properly and I got to keep my unlimited data plan. BB did not attempt to contact me in regards to my order, but it did take an unusual time to process the order which had me worried. I also did not contact Verizon. I just switched the SIM and my account updated automatically with the new phone. Thanks for the info and I hope this works for more people.

Just go to a corporate store and ask for a sim card that will work with ISIS. They will give you one.

I believe you should be able to just add the insurance on your line. I think it is line based not phone based.

I was looking into ordering from Best Buy online to upgrade phones, but I saw this when I chose a phone:

Does this method still work?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I haven't had any luck getting my order processed either. If you call the automated hotline and ask about order status you'll probably get a message about pre-activation failed. As far as billing/shipping addresses go (mine didn't match the first time either), I don't think it matters as I matched the addresses for a 2nd order attempt and the order still would not process.

As others have speculated, I guess it could just be an isolated glitch with our orders. But as Murphy's Law would have it, it would figure that I'd draw the short straw (one of a few) and hit a snag on my order.

I am considering trying it again in a few days after the dust that I stirred up over there have settled.

If you read only a few posts up (Specifically #356, with someone having the same screenshot prior), there is confirmation that it will still work and to just ignore the warning.

Doh! Didn't realized I missed that.

Thank you!

About how long did it take to process your order? I imagine they will send an email when processed and sent.

Update: I received an email about 6:15pm EDT saying my order was shipped. Sweet!!
