[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Just called to cancel my order after receiving one of those problem emails about "preactivation failure". I got transferred to a 2nd BB rep who then contacted Verizon and after coming back on the phone he said the problem was with my UDP. He said the only way to keep my plan was to pay full price for my new S5. I specifically asked the 1st BB rep if my employer discount had anything to do with the problem and she said probably not. They both seemed to think its a difference in the code that BB uses vs what Verizon is using. I guess I'm gonna try what others have done and continue to place new orders and hope that BB can activate this thing without involving Verizon. I'll update again. Just to recap I am on a family share plan and trying to do the 2 year upgrade on my line. Also I currently have Droid Bionic 4G Smartphone, so I'm guessing that is not the problem either. I'm considering doing the upgrade on my mom's line and transferring.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I don't have much luck in the store.. would you explain how, from their website, I can have VZW send me a couple of sims in the mail?

I have not had a good experience in the store, as well. If you go in and just ask for a Sim they want to have your phone and activate it for you. I consider this a risky move with UDP and try to work without having to talk to a store rep or CSR. In any case, here is how to get Verizon to send you a Sim.

On the website, log into your My Verizon account. You will see a link to Activate or Switch Device. Click on this link and then select your current phone on your current line. You will then see a screen that will ask if you are activating a phone that was not previously used on your account (or line). When you select this option, you will have screen that requests the MEID or IMED. When this information is placed into their system, they will verify that the ESN is clean and determine the size and type of Sim needed. At this point, it will ask if you have or need a Sim. Select that you need a Sim. You will go through an order process and the Sim will be mailed to you in a few days with instructions on how to activate your phone. There is no charge for sending you a new Sim.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I will try to get it through the chat. Being that I am due for an upgrade and I already have a phone what should I do with my upgrade?

You could save it for when the iPhone 6 comes out or Note 4 or some future phone. You could also get it and sell it on Craig's list or eBay for a profit as long as you don't mind being tied into your plan for another 2 years. Please post your results success or failure or negative so we can all learn if there are any new pitfalls.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I need some advice.

I ordered a M8 through Best Buy on 5/1 and received it on 5/8 and kept UDP and everything is good. Now, however I have some pretty bad scratches on the screen. What's the most pain-free way to get this phone replaced? Purchase an extended warranty at this point and go thru them? If so, which one? Or just go to Best Buy and claim something is wrong with software and request a replacement? Any ideas?

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Thanks to EVERYONE on this thread! I was upgrading from a Droid Razr and I just got the S5 to work! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'm so happy! I checked my account and it says the S5 and UDP still but I will keep monitoring for awhile.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Just to recap I am on a family share plan and trying to do the 2 year upgrade on my line.

I'm begining to wonder if it isn't the older plans that are causing the problem for some people. My upgrade isn't up until the second week of June, so I'll have to wait and see. However, I have a Family Share Plan and I've upgraded without changing that plan at least twice. I'm curious if any of the others that got a denial from BB were on a similarly old plan like myself and aflamin24?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I need some advice...I have UDP and took advantage of the one-day sale last week on the HTC One M8. Since it was really through Best Buy, I thought that I would be ok. I received an email that there was a problem with my order. I called up and they said that they just needed to contact Verizon to push through the upgrade since I was eligible.

Checked the Verizon site the next morning and no longer showed I had UDP, but now 2GB. Called up Verizon preparing for a fight, but I explained to rep the situation and she said the system was able to let her reinstate my UDP, and that I should refuse delivery of the new phone when it came and the Best Buy order would then automatically cancel out.

So I checked the Verizon site after I hung up and it did show my UDP reinstated, and also that my contract had been extended 2 years (had been on month-to-month). Long story short, the phone came today while I was at work and someone else signed for it. I just checked the Verizon site and it still shows I have UDP with the 2 year date extension on my current phone (Droid Razr). As a precaution, I opened up the phone (careful not to power it on) and removed the pre-installed SIM. My question is: do you think I would be okay now getting a new SIM card from Verizon (or cutting down the one in my Razr) and keep my UDP, or should I return the phone to Best Buy and try again some other time?

Per the detailed instructions, cut you sim down, power on. New phone!

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Thanks for the reply ROMAD27. I am on an old plan I guess, my upgrade has been eligible since July of 2013....this is really irritating me. I got the same CSR when I called BB after getting my 2nd email about "there was a problem with my order" Needless to say he wasn't able to help me and i cancelled that order as well.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

So you don't think I'm in any danger of losing my UDP again if I keep this phone?

If your account shows UDP then you sim dictates this info. I stores your profile. Not exactly sure what it stores in its entirety. Your situation shouldn't be any different then mine nor any others that had UDP showing then cut the sim down inserted and still maintained UDP.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I had this exact same problem except that I actually went through with the process all the way up to activating the phone! I lost my UDP, so I'm returning the phone to Best Buy today to get my unlimited back. Once I have it back on my account, I'm going to try again.

Verizon is giving me grief about attempting to revert to unlimited data. They had to submit a 'ticket' with 'technical support' to get my UDP back. I'll let you know how it goes...

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Yep, just got my S5 and my account still shows unlimited data. Next up, I'm going to try to add an iPhone 6 when it comes out to my wife's line on our family share plan. She currently has an old Moto flip, so it looks like we'll have to add a modest data plan to our package. Are there any pitfalls I should be looking for? Thanks for the advise.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Quick question, I currently have a Rezound. I assume if I want either the S5 or M8 I need a nano sim? Can I order this from Verizon and say I'm buying a used phone or do I need to resort to cutting my current sim?

S5 is a micro sim. I'm not sure what is in your rezound. I bought a cutter and it was dummy proof. It's seems like a scry thing to do but then when you do it you realize that calling verizon is much riskier.

You could try ordering a cutter and adapter and cutting your card before you begin the upgrade process. That way if you damage your sim you can call verizon and get a new one. After you cut the sim and you know it works you can then order your new phones with confidence that the sim will work.

Just a suggestion, not the way I did it.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Anyone have any idea what could have happened?

I went through the process once to get a new GS5 - worked flawlessly.
Did the process a second time to get a new iPhone 5s for a different line on the account, knocked the line down to 2 GB.
Thoughts?

I am also on a family plan with unlimited data. It was my wife's line where I got the message.. when I tried on my main line the first time I didn't get anything. I have had my family plan for quite awhile but I would assume most people who got it to work also had older plans.

What phone are you trying to upgrade? My wife's phone is a iphone4s. Maybe it has to do with being on a family plan and having an old 3g phone? Does anyone know anyone that works at BestBuy? lol

I had a rezound. I just took my SIM card to a local wireless store and had them cut my card. Put cut SIM in my LG G2 turned it on and it worked.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Well I pulled the trigger today. Bought the LG G2 for a buck (since it went back on sale). Figure I can't lose unless (of course) I lose UDP. So far the line I upgraded shows the extended contract date and UDP. However, if I look at the line I'm going to use it on, it shows UDP below (My Data Plan) but no plan on the "additional features"??? They can't read minds, right? All the other data plans (3 phones total) show unlimited in the Additional Features. Suppose to arrive next Thursday. I'll try to remember to post my results.

Just to clarify, I went through the process keeping my original data plan throughout (says so on my receipt). However, I didn't really read the terms of agreement (who does), so it may actually state that if you upgrade on an existing UDP you need to get a new plan (don't really know).
