[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Do I have to buy at Best Buy to keep my UDP now or what??

I currently have an HTC Rezound with UDP and I'm due for an Upgrade. I want to get a Samsung Note (either 2 or 3 haven't decided yet. Looks like $50 for a Note 2 at Best Buy and $200 for a Note 3 at Amazon are currently the best deals?)

Does anyone know if I'll have to cut my SIM card to move it from the Rezound to one of these Notes?

Also, could someone talk me into either saving $ with a Note 2 or going for a Note 3?? I really don't need the 'latest and greatest" just a good phone/web browser with great battery life! My wife has a Note 2 and LOVES IT! Note 3 is fairly new and might still have some issues or is it also a rock solid GOOD phone??

I have the Note 3 and had the 2. The 3 is greatly improved over the 2. One of the biggest differences is the screen is better and had much better viewing in daylight.

That said the Note 2 was a great device.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

I just went through the best buy online order of a verizon gs5 to be delivered. It said keep my existing plan. Americas choice 2 family share plan 1400

I soon got a "there's a problem" email.
I called best buy who put me on hold, the rep called verizon who claimed it errored because I can't keep the unlimited... I then canceled the order.

We have 2 lines on the account both with Unlimited, this was the secondary line I was upgrading I think I read this could be the problem? Should I try just line 1?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

After reading multiple threads and also reading through this as well as the BB method. I decided to make my move.

I ordered my new device through verizon wireless online. I'm just really looking for confirmation to put my mind to rest.

i have the nationwide 700 plan.

Line 1: droid razr maxx UDP upgrade eligible
Line 2: Iphone 5c 2gb data plan upgrade eligible
Line 3: basic phone not upgrade eligible
Line 4: basic phone not upgrade eligible

I ordered the phone using the upgrade on line 2.Shipped to my home. I did not do a upgrade transfer or anything like that.

My first question is did i already mess up? I'm hoping it isn't necessary to "transfer upgrade" online when going through order process.

My second question is when the phone arrives do i just put my current sim card thats on line 1 into the subsidized phone? or should i activate it on line 2 first, then deactivate, and then use sim from line 1 to activate on line 1.

I already purchased a sim cutter from amazon because im going from micro to nano sim.

Thank you all for your knowledge and experiences. I would have never made it this far without this community.

You're fine. You only transfer from an UDP line to basic or measured line when you have an available upgrade on a UDP line that you want to use. If you're using an available upgrade on a basic line or a measured data line just use the upgrade straight. It was initially believed that you had to activate the new phone on what would be your line 2 first but it isn't necessary. When the phone comes just take the SIM from your old UDP phone and put it in the new phone (assuming their the same size.) you you should be good to go.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hey all.

This worked for me - got two new HTC One M7s, selected "Keep My Current Plan." Got the phones in the mail yesterday, replaced the SIMs, and this morning I'm showing a new contract end date and "Unlimited Data" in my account.

Thanks a lot for all the posts, this has been insanely helpful!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I've read through a few pages and I am a little confused on whether I need to activate my phone on the line it was ordered with or not.

Basically I have 2 lines.
Line 1- UDP with upgrade elegible
Line 2- Dumb phone with no upgrade eligible

So I transferred the upgrade to the dumb phone line and added a 2 gig plan to order a new m8. It came in but I have not activated it yet. So can I just take the Sim out of my Line 1 smartphone and put it in the m8? Or do I need to activate it on Line 2 first?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I tried this today and I was able to place the order ok however, I received an email that said I needed to call BB. When I did they said that preactivation failed and connected me to someone else that wanted to make sure I understood that I would loose unlimited data. If I confirm that it is ok and get the phone, will this method still work?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Did you order the phone for your main line or a secondary line on a family plan? Others have received this issue when updating on a secondary line but not aprimary line.

I ordered it for a secondary line. I already reordered it for the primary line and will just activate it on my secondary line when it arrives with my current sim.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

From everything I've read you should:
1. Do not turn on or activate new phone (m8).
2. Simpy take existing sim from UDP phone and insert it into the new phone
3. should activate/recognize new phone on Line 1 with no change to UDP
4. supposedly the new 2 gig plan should drop off after a while since the new phone was never activated on Line 2

That's what I've gathered too. I just wanted to be sure so I don't lose my unlimited data or cause any issues down the road.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Flyingarrow describe success doing that. But that is just one example so mileage may vary:
Two smart phones with UDP
Line1 UDP (Upgrade available)
Line2 UDP

Order phone Line1, select data plan
Receive phone activate on Line2 (Before turning on, take out SIM that comes with phone and discard as may be pre-activated on Line1)
Line1 data plan will not get implemented, pending activation/data plan will drop off in a week

Just wanted to report that we still have our unlimited data. Seems to have worked for good. No swapping SIM cards or going to Best Buy or using a 3rd line.

Excellent, great to hear another confirmation that this method works. Thanks for the update.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I think I just kept unlimited data on two simultaneous upgrades. No extra line needed. No trip to Best Buy. No cutting SIM cards. Not even picking up new SIM cards.

Online, I went through with normal upgrades on both lines, requesting a Droid MAXX and an HTC One M8. I upgraded both separately so that I wasn't forced to enroll in Share Everything. Instead, both numbers stayed on the Nationwide plan. I did have to mark a 2GB line for each upgrade when getting the phones, seeming like I'd lose unlimited. The phones arrived today. I had requested the phone I want on her line and the phone she wanted on my line. Then I activated them online but put them on the opposite lines from how I ordered them. I treated them as if they were any phone I picked up from a 3rd party. The SIM cards that came with the phones worked fine during activation - I didn't have to get new ones. Both phones are now working and My Verizon still says I have unlimited data. The contracts have been extended 2 years. Unless there's something that is going to time out and turn off the unlimited data in the next week or two, that appears to have worked.

I did this based on the suggestion of one helpful Verizon rep on the phone. I tried calling many other times to get confirmation and possibly have someone walk me through it, but everybody else I talked to in chat or on the phone said I had to buy full retail.

Oh - there was one slightly tricky part. When I went to activate the phones, it defaults to ask if I want to activate the new phone they shipped me. There's a link to instead go to another page where you can activate a different phone. It's a sentence at the end of the paragraph - not a large button or anything like that, so it might be easy to overlook. Then choose the radio button to activate a phone that you haven't had on that number previously.

I want to thank you for posting this. My son and I both have unlimited and both upgrade elegable. Ordered 2 phone separately and activated exactly the way you said, and we still have unlimited data!
I suppose only time will tell if we keep it but for now we still have it.
Thanks again!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hey guys! Just stumbled upon this thread while trying to find a way to keep my unlimited data without paying unsubsidized prices. I've been reading through the thread and it seems like the BB method might be the way to go for me. If I am understanding this correctly, I would order a phone online from BB and select the option to keep my existing plan, but when the phone arrives I want to be sure NOT to use the new sim card that comes with it? That seems to be an important factor with this method and might present a problem for me.

I broke my Galaxy Nexus a while back and didn't have insurance so I never bothered to fix/replace it and instead just activated my original droid, which is obviously a 3G phone and doesn't use a sim card, and I worry that my sim card has since been deactivated for inactivity--it has been quite some time since I broke the nexus. Is my old 4G sim inactive? And if it is, is there a way to reactivate it?

Thanks for any help guys!

And sorry for a lot of text, just hoping to keep my unlimited data without paying full price for a new phone.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Thank you guys for all of the advice! I was able to upgrade my mainline phone to a new S5 and retain the UDP. I also was able to order a new sim card with NFC from Verizon and sucessfully activated on my new phone, special thanks to Plim for the detailed write-up.

The only problem I have yet to solve is my wife's line on the my family plan. So far, it sounds like any line with UDP on family line cannot get their order through with best buy because of some pre-activation error with the code not matching with Verizon. It seems that the only way to complete the order is to involve Verizon which will result in the removal of the UDP.

The only one I have seen that got through it Lionelhutz who got the Verizon rep to add back the unlimited data plan with promise of cancelling the order but ending up keeping the phone anyways :) . I am not sure if I want to go through that risk as I know from experience it can take weeks to get the UDP back. Maybe the only option is to do transfer that upgrade from an unused line to another. I don't know... does anyone who had the same problem as me have any thoughts?

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

So this won't work with a family plan? What if I do it on the main line will that work?

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Small update... As I already said I Tried to update my secondary line only. Got the error, called and the bb rep called verizon who immediately said you can't have unlimited. Canceled order.

I then Reordered :) got the error email again.
Called again, new rep says he fixed it on his end, no need to call VZ and to wait for he tracking email :)

No new email yet and it's a holiday weekend, I'll post the results in a few a days.

If it doesn't work, and for whatever reason it has to be the primary, I suppose u could do it, transfer the phone and upgrades and redo on primary again maybe

An answer to this would be helpful for me, as well - I have a Rezound and am interested in the Galaxy S5 but really can't afford to pay $700 for it.

I would reactive the GN when you get your new phone in. Then put that SIM in the new phone.
