[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

I called bestbuy mobile and they said i would have to bring it into the store for an exchange.

Dont think you need to worry. Its mainly activation of that SIM that will really get ya and remove that UDP

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

UPDATE:

So i was able to return my phone, get the UDP back (after i called the activation and activated the SIM that came with the new phone) and then re-do the process all over again.

Just got the LG G2 for my other line and just as before - put SIM from previous phone - works.

STEPS:

1.) order phone from bestbuy.com
2.) replace the SIM that cames in the phone with the one out of the old phone
3.) profit.

TY SO VERY MUCH TO WHOEVER FIGURED THIS OUT! I use 10 gigs a month on average... VZW kept trying to switch me out of that into a 6 gig... this helps me out SO much!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Can I just buy a new sim card online, rather than use the sim card that would ship with the new phone?

I have read posts that you can replace the SIM card. For example certain programs wont work with older SIMs (the wallet app). So deep in this thread people have mentioned you can replace that SIM with one purchased from VZW and it wont change the UDP. The only stipulation is that you BURN THE SIM THAT COMES WITH THE NEW PHONE AND NEVER, EVER, ACTIVATE IT.

oh - a couple of posts up is all i had to look:

Update - Getting a SIM card from store

(Bought S5 at BB to upgrade a Droid X - no SIM card in X to swap into new phone)
Went to Verizon retail store and asked for a SIM card. Of course they wanted to see my phone - employee opens the back and 'viola' there is a SIM card in it already. Whoops! It is white and for some reason I thought they were black like the SD cards. I didn't see it when I put the battery in. So I mumbled something about figuring it out myself and slunk away.
Employee also asked where I got the phone and how much I paid.

Went to a corporate store better prepared. SIM card was out, researched swappa and how much the S5s are going for. This time everything was smooth. They set up the SIM card free and made sure everything was working. They referenced my UDP several times (like how nice it is to have & you won't have to worry about this because you have UDP). So I think its all good and I love my phone.
THANKS everyone!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Well, I screwed up some where along the way. When I activated my new phone verizon dropped me to 1.8GB/mo. Called and complained, but no go. He offered me 6 GB for $30/mo, but I told him no and I want my unlimited. So had him reactivate my old phone and once I return my new Galaxy S5 to BB then i'll get my unlimited data back (or so they say).

So what I did.

1. Bought phone on BB. Order showed I would be keeping my same plan with no changes.
2. Did expedited shipping and it showed up in 48 hours.
3. Put SIM from my Droid Rzr into the S5, and then called the number to activate. (I'm guessing this is where I screwed up?)
4. During the phone call it said something about activating the phone from the order, press 1. Did that.
5. Checked account and no longer had UDP.

So now i'm a peeved at myself since I screwed up some where. He reactivated my Droid, and account at the moment says 6GB, but I have a Samsung S5 that I have to return in order to get UDP back.

So now I worry that once I return the droid, will I get the UDP back? The tech guy said I would... but will I? If I decide to keep the new phone and call them and say give me the 6GB at $30/mo, what's to say at some date down the road they say in order to keep your 6GB you must pay X amount more?

This is a very frustrating situation. I read everyone's success stories so I figured i'd give it a try (this after waiting almost 2 months since I became eligible for upgrade). My only other option is to drop verizon (which I basically said I was going to do to the guy) and go with another company and hope I can get what I want. Bleh...

Any thoughts guys? I'm going to sit on the phone a day or so and think it over before I take it back.

Yes.... i have posted about this same situation to a "T" in this thread. When you call that activation number it activates the SIM that comes with the new phone.

Just return the phone to bestbuy, make sure they notate the account that you returned it (VZW can see their notes) and call VZW after you do that to change the plan back to the UDP. When you call VZW they create a ticket and it gets processed in 48hrs. After you verify it was changed back, rinse and repeat.

Buy new phone online, get it shipped, remove sim from old phone and put it in new phone - profit.

I have 2 lines, the first line was my "trial" line to see if this worked. I called the activation and got that hiccup of losing UDP. I returned the phone (LG G2) even though i took the other new phone for the other line and threw it on the line that lost UDP. So when i returned it they were throwing up eye brows and when i called in to get UDP back on that line i could hear their eyebrows fling up... "So wait, your returning a LG G2 but have a LG G2 on that line?" - yes... now do it. Done.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Yeah, I did see the above post about putting a new SIM in and not using the one that comes with the phone--under no circumstances do that. I was questioning whether or not I needed to go into a Verizon store to get a new SIM or if I could just purchase a new one off ebay and plug that one into my new phone. I have the OG droid( broke my phone and didn't have insurance so I've been stuck with it) and it obviously has no SIM so I am just trying to cover all of my bases.

Also, if I have read through the last couple pages correctly: Secondary lines have not been receiving the error message if they are account managers...is that correct?

Thanks for all the help!

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

One more quick update:

This method still works as of today.

As others have said, the keys appear to be:

1) The first thing you need to do after removing the back AND BEFORE INSTALLING THE BATTERY is to remove the sim card that comes with the phone. Keep track of the new one, and treat it like hazardous material (I took a marker and put a big "NO!!" on it). You may destroy it if you wish, unless you think you might need to return the phone.

2) Without reading it, recycle the instruction letter that comes from VZW/BB.

3) Place your old sim card in the new phone.

4) Install the battery, and fire up the phone. Do NOT call anyone for activation! Go about your normal business. An hour after doing all this, My Verizon shows the new device, as well as my UDP.

Thanks to the courageous discoverers of this method!

I can confirm it's still working. I just got finished cutting my SIM card and firing up new IPhone5s. All is still good. Works great. Now I need a sim adapter to go back and forth from iPhone to One Max.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

You guys have got some luck, Best Buy/Verizon continues to reject me. I'm convinced there is some combination of plan/package that lets this go through, and another that Verizon/Best Buy catches during authentication:

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was able to keep my UD plan via the best buy method a few months ago and upgraded to the note 3 - Just swapped out sim cards and no issues. But I keep getting this persistant notification that my voice mail app has been updated and that I need to "tap here to configure visual voicemail" - I have been ignoring it thinking that visual voicemail did not come with the old plans.. will installing this feature bump me from my UDP? Anyone else have this issue as well? What were the outcomes?

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Got my new S5 and installed sim that I had verizon send to me (since I had a simless iphone4). Everything works fine!

You could update it since it is a feature in your plan. I use Google Voice for my visual voice mail needs. Even though Verizon doesn't support it, it still works.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Situation:

(L#1) Galaxy S3 with UD [upgrade eligible]
(L#2) Dumbphone with no data plan [upgrade eligible]

Want to upgrade dumbphone to smartphone without losing UD on the S3

Of the following scenarios, which are possible?

1) Use L#2 upgrade on dumbphone, activate on UD line, then replace the dumbphone with S3
2) Use L#2 upgrade on dumbphone, activate on UD line, transfer L#1 upgrade to dumbphone line, upgrade and activate smartphone on dumbphone line

I was told adding any data plan to L#2 would ruin the UD on L#1, which both scenarios do, so before I go into the Verizon store I wanted to hear if anyone has done something similar. Thanks

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Line 1 : UDP no upgrade (will be in another couple of weeks)
Line 2: 2gb data Upgrade Available

I just upgraded Line 2 from an iPhone 4S to a LG G2. I want to use the LG G2 on Line 1 which has the UDP. After looking through this thread, I need to verify what I should do when I get the LG G2:

1) Should I remove the SIM card from Line 1 phone (Droid Razr Maxx), put in the LG G2 and then just let it activate?
2) Do I need to first activate Line 2 with the new phone? Then deactivate and then try to activate it on Line 1?

I ask because I notice when looking in 'My Verizon' that if I go to 'upgrade devices' it has the iPhone 4S (Line 2) grayed out and it says 'Device Needs to be activated, activate when you receive device'. If want to transfer my Line 1 upgrade to Line 2 in a few weeks, but will I be able to this if the iPhone 4S line is waiting to be activated with a new phone?

thanks

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Greetings all,

Quick advice if possible, I've been up for an upgrade for a while, I have 4 phones all 4s and UDP. How do I go about attempting this upgrade if I do not have a SIM card. I'm still on 3G. I really just want to upgrade 2 of the lines.

Thanks again ahead of time!!!

Btw, I'm trying to get the S5's.

This is an educated guess, but I think you might need to look into the "other" upgrade method, through Verizon.

http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon/227608-instruction-how-keep-unlimited-data-verizon.html

The gist of it, as I understand it, is you either use (or posibly add) a "Dummy line" which just has a feature phone on it. Use your upgrade there, get your nice, new phone, then transfer it to your "real" line, and cancel the data plan that you had to open when you ordered your new upgrade phone on the dummy line.

-I think...

Both 1 & 2 work. #1 is easier. Just take your old SIM and put it in your new G2. The pending upgrade on Line 2 will eventually fall off. (Some says falls off immediately, some after a week.) If after a week still there you can call to ask them to take it off. Can't transfer another upgrade to Line 2 until the pending activation falls off.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

new here and stumbled across this thread. hoping somebody can hold my hand and point me in the right direction because I don't have time to read 52 pages and I am sure this has been answered.

I have an old phone without a sim card and an UDP. I have refused to upgrade my phone because of the capped data on the new plans however my phone will only make it about 6 hours on a full charge with little use anymore. I would like to get a new phone. Is there any way I can work this and get a sim card for my existing account even though I have an old droid incredible? Appreciate the help and sorry for what is certain to be a repeat question.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It won't ruin anything. But if I were you I'd do the best buy method in case you need the other upgrade in the future.

I believe you can order a new phone from Verizon's website and when you get it just go to swap device and do it that way...

You don't lose the other upgrade.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Ordered an S5 for my wife on Wednesday night, she is the primary account holder on our plan. The next morning I got an email from Best Buy saying that there is a problem with my order and that I need to contact them to clear things up. I also missed a call from an unknown number which turned out to be Best Buy. I tried canceling my order on their site but it says I cannot cancel my order, the site says that when all of the items with my order are ready they will be shipped together. I tried logging on to Verizon yesterday and today to check our account but It is claiming that they are currently unable to process my request and that their billing system is down.
