[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Ok, I have been reading this thread a lot and decided to give it a try by ordering the M8 from BB. I failed miserably. I got the "There's a problem with your order" email but I hadn't read about it. So I just called the number thinking I would probably end up cancelling the order. Long story short, BB switched me to a 2GB plan but didn't bother switching voice to unlimited. The other part is that my currenty phone would no longer make or recieve calls. I called BB to follow up. They told me that the order was too far along to stop before shipping and would not help me with my plan. They informed me that I would have to contact Verizon to comllpain about that. When I contacted VZ, the lady was quite pleasant to deal with. She removed he upgrade and told me that if I wanted to keep my UDP that I need to buy an off contract phone. I played dumb. So now BB is sending me a phone for which I paid a subsidized price and VZ has removed my upgrade and reverted me back to my old UDP. My questions are as follows: Can I activate this phone as an off contract phone now? If so, can I use the included sim or should I trim my Galaxy Nexus sim to fit? And did I fall bass ackwards into an amazing deal?

If you are going to go all guts into it I would use your old sim. BUT I recommend returning it and starting over. Was this line a secondary line by chance?

Do not use the included sim. If you do, that will complete the switch order that best buy placed.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

No this was an upgrade by "keep my existing plan" method. I'm thinking that BB doesn't really care that the plan was reverted back. Also, I guess I could try the method previously mentioned where I could get the adapter and activate the new sim in my GNEX and then activate the new phone with my new sim. That's assuming it this phone can be activated at all without issues.

This comment makes perfect sense to me. Coming from a rooted/ROM'd, completely custom modded GNEX, I was actually looking forward to having a hacked SIM in this new phone. :)

Re: Verizon How to Both Get a Subsidized Phone and Keep Unlimited Data after 8/24/14

If I use an upgrade from another account separate from mine that is a basic line to get a smartphone. Do I need to activate it on their account/line first or can I just activate it on mine when I receive it? Bear in mind I would have to use a new SIM not the one in my current phone as it wouldn't fit.

Request a new sim or cut your sim to size

Re: Verizon to close the upgrade to smartphone then downgrade to basic phone loophole

Thus, I am presuming that it will be the donor line that gets the data plan requirement, too, but that we will have to wait to see what will happen.

This is what I was worried about in our PM's. Or are you saying this because the donor line is a basic line thus trying to transfer an upgrade and selecting a smartphone that a basic line never had thus forcing you to select a data plan?

One second I thought it was pretty straight forward now this has me concerned all over again. I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and transfer now to avoid all of the what ifs...

What are you asking me? If you are asking me if I know for sure how things are going to work after 8/24/14, well all I can go on are those Verizon memos that were posted by someone else on the internet and I have reposted here.

yes, i understand that, but all any of us can do is guess about how it is going to work after 8/24/14 based on those leaked memos. No one here knows for sure how verizon will implement the data plan requirement if you transfer a basic line's upgrade to a tiered or UDP line after 8/24/14.

I can tell you how it works now but after 8/24/14, I like everyone else here is guessing how it will work.

Right but do I need to activate it on the other line first or can I just activate it directly on mine? Seeing conflicting reports of saying I can skip that step and you cant

I have a feeling they may change more then just what is mentioned here. My thinking is they may change how the transfers work as well and maybe I should play it safe and order phones now as you had mentioned in PM's.

This is my thinking as well. Would not surprise me if they eliminate transfers from basic lines too. I'm in the same boat.

So what are you're plans? Based off of JulesJam's advise, I think I may upgrade the dumb line for the daughter today, she wants an iPhone : /
Let that transaction go thru then transfer my UDP upgrade to her line, maybe get a G3, I already have an M8 (I wanted to wait for the Note 4 but I’m not confident enough the transfers will be around or work accordingly at that time) , activate it on her line the switch her’s back to the iPhone then activate the G3 on my UDP line. UGHHHH! This shouldn’t bee so damn stressful! : )

I think the writing is on the wall for transferring upgrades from udp lines, but how soon they are going to pull the plug on this, idk. I think they are going to try throttling first but who knows.

I will be transferring an upgrade from a udp line to a basic line as soon as best buy has the iPhone 6 available for shipping and will report back how it worked.

Re: Verizon closing the transfer upgrade loophole?

Because with att you can upgrade and still keep unlimited data.

No one knows how network optimization will effect VZW Unlimited Users in actuality, until after October 1. Assuming coverage is not an issue, I would argue that Unlimited Data with Verizon is also more valuable than unlimited with AT&T. It's also why Verizon probably is trying so hard to get people off it.

With Verizon, I can take my phone sim and put it in any 4G capable device and carry on. AT&T wouldn't allow this for long and I know there are already many reports of throttling with AT&T.

So you have no intensions of upgrading you basic line first then transfer your UDP upgrade as has been suggested? Sounds like you are in the same predicament as I am... So what is the rumored release date of the iPhone 6?

Also, the more I read about the G3 the more I want to take the chance and hold onto my UDP transfer upgrade and use it for the Note 4. UGHHH!
