[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

When you transfer the upgrade from Line1 UDP to Line2 TDP the Line1 UDP contract is extended 2 years but that plan doesn't change. The new thing is that the receiving line now has to stay on TDP for 2 years which is no big deal since it is already TDP. Update us on how it goes.

Yea she has wifi available all day so it's no big deal to be on the tdp, but if she's due for a upgrade in feb. Will she still be able to do so even if I give her my upgrade? Or will she have to buy a phone on the side without the cheaper price. Def will post how it goes.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all. I'm 76 years old and I can use some help here because I don't follow a lot of what is being written. I have unlimited data on Verizon and I watch a lot of Netflix on my phone. I want to get a Note 4 with the discount at Best Buy but don't want to lose my unlimited data. Is there a way to do that? If not, my son is also getting a new phone and he's eligible for an upgrade. He could get the Note 4 and just give it to me but he wants a new phone to (he would take a Note 3, though, so maybe there's a way to do that?). Is there a way to accomplish this without my having to purchase the Note 4 (or Note 3 if I get my son to order the 4 and I buy a 3 for him) at full price? Thank you very much for any assistance you might provide.

You can get as many phones as your acct has lines eligible for upgrades.

If both lines (son's and your's) are eligible and currently are 4G devices you simply place and order for any device which is currently available for shipping from BestBuy.com. Whenever the new phone shows up you FIRST remove the new SIM and discard. Then you insert your current 4G SIM into the new device and power up. Make a call to any phone number and the calling plan that belonged to the old SIM continues.

BestBuy shows that the Note3 is currently shipping and cost $99.
The Note4 is $299 but not currently shipping.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ask any followup questions.

Yes it won't effect her coming upgrade in February. The upgrade available on your UDP line will be used up when you transfer and order your phone now. In February there will be another upgrade available on her phone line. With that one you don't transfer it, just use it to order a phone on her line. If you wan't to keep it there fine, if you want to move it again to your line you can do that too.

Sounds good, sorry for all the questions. Just wanted to figure it out! I'll get the ball rolling then. Thank you

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thank you for responding, dss. I have a Samsung Galaxy s3. It is 4G. I just checked the SIM card and it only says Verizon on it with a series of numbers. My plan is unlimited data and I've had it for years. Verizon says I can upgrade with a two year plan, but I'd have to switch plans (and lose my unlimited data). I don't want to do that. My son has a limited data plan and is due for an upgrade. I'm looking for the cheapest way to get myself the Note 4 and him the Note 3 (he will order the 4 for me if it makes it cheaper). Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

I just figured out how to reply with the previous message embedded. Thank you for responding, shortwave. My son is eligible for an upgrade. I'm eligible for an upgrade, but Verizon says I will lose my unlimited data unless I pay full price for my new phone. I know I can switch phones with anyone, though, so my plan was to buy my son a Note 3 (which presumably will drop in price) and get myself the Note 4 on his account and use that for my phone. But it sounds like your plan may be better.

If I follow what you're saying, I could just order the Note 4 for myself and when the phone comes in, just go to Best Buy, swap my SIM card for the one in the Note 4 and I will have paid $299. Is that right? That would be easier than dragging my son into the plan.

Finally, I understand there's a Best Buy discount. Could I use that if I turn in my Samsung Galaxy S3 making the phone only $99? I'm assuming not. I'm sorry for so many questions, but much of what I'm reading here is way over my head technically.

He will have to you hours upgrade first. Once he uses his then you can transfer yours.

Hi shortwave. Thank you for responding. I wrote another response and it seems to have disappeared. Maybe it will post and this will be duplicative.

I am eligible for an upgrade, but Verizon says I'll have to change plans and give up my unlimited data if I get a new phone and don't pay full price. If I understand you correctly, you're saying that I can order the phone from Best Buy and when it arrives at my house, I simply swap out the SIM card with the one in my current Samsung Galaxy S3 and my Note 4 will maintain my unlimited data plan. Is that correct?

My son is also eligible for an upgrade and does not have unlimited data. He is fine with a Note 3. So my plan was to order the Note 4 on his line and pay full price for the Note 3 and swap with him. But it sounds like your plan would be cheaper and more convenient (if I'm reading it correctly).

Finally, is there any way that I can use the $200 Best Buy trade in discount? I could trade in my Samsung Galaxy S3, but I don't want to lose my unlimited data. Thank you very much for your help. I feel a bit lost with the technical jargon on this site.

So you have:
Line1: UDP S3 (upgrade available)
Line2: TDP (upgrade available)

Verizon method: Since Note 4 not yet available you can get the Note 3 first. Order Note 3 on Line2, Activate it on Line2. Line2 contract will be extended for 2 years, you will have used the upgrade on Line2. When the Note 4 comes out transfer the upgrade from Line1 to Line2 and order the Note 4.

When the Note 4 comes you can do 1 of 2 methods:

1) Take the SIM from your Galaxy S3 on Line1 and put it in the new Note 4 and your done. Note 4 will be UDP on your Line1. There will be a pending activation on Line2 and it will fall off in about a week.

2) Activate the New Note 4 on Line2 that the Note 3 was on. Then re-activate the Note 3 back on Line2 freeing up the Note 4. Take the SIM from your S3 and put it in your Note 4. Note 4 will be on Line1 with UDP intact. There will not be a pending activation to wait for to fall off.

Update us on how it goes.

Thank you, dss. So I'd pay full price for the Note 3 on my line (Line 1 in your example), correct? It seemed to me that shortwave was saying that I might just be able to order the Note 4 on my line at the $299 discounted Best Buy rate and just swap the SIM card before turning on the phone. Would that work? If so, it would save me a lot of money because I wouldn't have to pay for the full priced Note 3 and my son could just get his upgrade as he usually would. Sorry if I'm misunderstanding.

There are two different methods, Verizon method and Best Buy method. You are getting confused. But you will not have to pay for price for either phone no matter which method you decide to use because you have two upgrades available.

Since you have two lines and one is a TDP I would use the Verizon method.

On your son's line that has TDP just use his upgrade to get his phone (Note 3). I think somebody said above is $99. He just activates it on his line and is good to go.

On Oct 17th when they start shipping the Note 4 get online on Verizon and transfers the upgrade from your UDP line to your son's line and order the Note 4 (starts at $299). When the phone comes in DO NOT TURN IT ON! Take out the old SIM abs throw it away. Take the SIM from your phone now and put it into the Note 4. Now turn on the Note 4 and you will be good to go and keep your UDP.

Don't know how it could be explained anymore clear then that.

No, first purchase Note 3 on Line2 at subsidized price and activate it on Line2
Wait for Note 4 to come out.
When Note 4 comes out transfer the upgrade from Line1 to Line2 and then order the Note 4 at the subsidized price.
When the Note 4 comes, take the SIM from your old S3 and put it in the Note 4
Done

At no step are you paying full price.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

For Note 4: Could you tell me why you should wait until orders are shipping vs. pre-ordering?
I have one UDP line w/upgrade and 1 TDP w/upgrade, if I pre-order under the TDP with intentions of switching out to UDP line w/SIM why would pre-ordering be an issue?
I only take a year contract (business line) and this is what I did last year with a pre-order and it was fine. Just wondering if there's a specific reason.

wondering this myself?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

wondering this myself?

i am wanting to pre order the note 4 to get the 200 rebate.. and keep my unlimited i have
line 1 upd line upgrade
line 2 tdp line no upgrade

can i just swap upgrade pre order on verizon.com then when phone comes in activate it on line 2 then swap it to line one using line ones sim?

Hi Carl,
No worries. It couldn't be simplernfor you and your son to get new phones AND KEEP YOUR CURRENT PLANS.

To get new phones and keep old plans you must order your phones online at BestBuy.com and have them delivered to your home. Do not use in store pickup.

When ordering the phones you select KEEP EXISTING PLAN during the checkout process (there will be a warning the Verizon no longer has unlimited plan-just ignore).

You then will be asked to give BestBuy your Verizon wireless.com login username and pass word - please do so. This confirm any our upgrade eligibility and gets you the subsidized price shown online.

Complete the check out process. When the new phones arrive leave them powered off. Put in your OLD SIM card (never ever put in the new SIM card- throw it away). Insert the battery for new phone. Power it up. Make a phone call to working phone number.

You now have a new phone and your old calling plan. Basically Verizon attaches your calling plan to the SIM card being used. Don't contact Verizon or Best Buy if you place an order and get an email saying there is a problem. Immediately cancel the order if that happens.

I will answer all of your questions and you can ask anything Carl. Any way you and your son get new phones and keep unlimited data on the line that has unlimited data. But right now BestBuy has not started shipping the Note4 so it is not available yet. But the Note3/is available for $99. That is the phone I bought 2months agonandnreally like it.

I do not know the answer to your question about the BestBuy trade-in program. Sorry
Best wishes

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks to shortwave, dss and tx_tuff for all of your wonderful assistance. If I have this right, I have two options:

1. Verizon method. Transfer my upgrade to my son after he does his upgrade. Can someone explain how to do this transfer? [Edited to add: We do not have a family plan. His is his own plan. Is that an issue for transferring the upgrade?]
2. Best Buy method. Forget about my son's line and just buy the phone through Best Buy online and have them deliver it to my house. Once it comes, just swap the SIM card before powering it up.

If that's right, option 2 will be simpler for me because I won't have to drag my son into the scheme. But please le me know if I've missed something. Again, my apologies for being dim on this, but perhaps my ignorance and your knowledge is helping others as well. Thank you very much indeed!

You got it right.

You can transfer online, it's an option when you check for upgrades I believe.

This is correct.

Regarding which method to choose: if you want a Note 4 and want to use the BB method, you'll be stuck waiting until BB stocks the Note 4 for shipping. There's no way to know when that is; it will probably be some time after the actual release. If you're fine with that, it's a perfectly valid option.

That is a good summary of your options. Option 2 keeps everything the same as it is now except for replacing old phones with new phones. If a line has tiered data it keeps tiered data. If a line has unlimited data it keeps unlimited data.

Option 2 extends the Verizon contract for 2yrs on only the line it is used on.

Good luck Carl with your decision. Feel free to ask for help if needed.
