[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ughhhh! I think I was flagged. :-( I did the whole process following the steps exactly, and then at the end it says that "my wireless provider has requested additional verification. Please call us at...etc" i definitely do not want to call, correct?! Cuz then they'll make me change my plan??? :-(

I'm scared to do it again, but 2 years ago I upgraded on Verizon online from my iPhone 4 to the 5. It told me the same thing back then that id have to change my plan (single line with UDP). So I went through the steps assuming my UDP was gone for good. Got the upgrade, put the sim in before turning on or plugging in and didn't even need to activate it. To my surprise there was no changes to my plan! I've been told countless times by many reps that this was a fluke in their system and that it won't happen again. But I was told that last time too....I'm just a little scared to risk it! :-(

Any other options or loopholes for a gal who used 50+gb a month without having to pay full retail price? (eBay is a joke, people go nuts on the price of those things. It'd be cheaper to buy it retail at Verizon than there)

You were not flagged. Best Buy has stepped up their efforts to prevent people with single line plans from using their loophole. Don't call and just cancel your order. You'll need to keep trying to see if it eventually goes through. What you did last time will still work if you can get the phone shipped to you at home.

Unfortunately, there are not a lot of great options for you if you can't get the Best Buy method to work. At that point, you will be probably stuck in the used or full price market.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Pringles089 I had the same issue with best buy. I ended up ordering off costco (they use membership wireless) and having it shipped to my house. Did the sim swap trick and still have my unlimited. The only difference between the best buy and costco methods is that the costco paperwork says my plan is 2GB but as long as you don't use the new sim the new plan doesn't become active.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Oh ok. So it's just the paperwork that says 2gb? Not your Verizon account?

Could she follow the same process through Verizon instead?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Best Buy is randomly checking orders that select "keep your existing plan" and have unlimited data.

The good news is that you can use Verizon for this by transferring your upgrade to the basic line and then upgrading. When the new phone arrives just use your current SIM. Your basic line will have a pending activation for about a month. Don't plan on making any changes to it anytime soon. If you want a new basic phone, I recommend upgrading it before working on your smartphone.

Okay, I have ordered my iphone6plus from vzw.
transferred my upgrade (from UDP line) to a basic phone with no upgrade on vzw's site (as BB wouldn't allow me to transfer the upgrade, and it also gave me the warning that it couldn't continue my order, had to confirm with vzw)...so, iphone is here ordered on basic line. I have a nano sim in an adapter in my current Galaxy S4. Do i do the whole activate the new phone on my line with the new sim, or do i simply take the phone out of the box remove the included sim card, and just stick my sim in from my Galaxy s4 and I'm off (with no online activating?) Thank you for your help...just want to make sure i don't screw it up - and I'll post how it works when i'm done!

The choice is yours since you have an activated nano SIM; though, I would recommend online activation only because Apple and Android devices use different types of SIM cards even if they are the same size (it relates to NFC). If you plan on using Apple Pay, you'll want to use the online activation method because your Android SIM will not work with it.

To my knowledge Verizon does not work for single line users. With 3rd party retailers, the plan change is actually tied to the SIM card. That's why if a phone is never activated with the SIM that is shipped with it, the plan does not change. When using Verizon, a single line user's plan is automatically changed in the system. With a multiple lines, Verizon's system acts a little bit differently.

Now with that said, hypothetically, it could work. I don't know of anyone who has used the Best Buy Method on Verizon with a single line plan. Pringles would be testing it out for all of us.

Be careful when using Costco. There are various people who have lost unlimited because Costco has started to randomly move people off unlimited.

What phone do you have and what do you want to upgrade to?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks! The other line that I intend to use for the Best Buy method is indeed a basic line. Could you elaborate on what those "other methods" are? :) I would prefer not to cut my own SIM card, if possible. :)

Just do the following:

1) Through Verizon or Best Buy online, order the new smartphone the UDP Line wants using a basic line's upgrade on the basic line, picking the 2GB data plan for the basic line and have it shipped to home not shipped to store (if you want to transfer the upgrade, you must use Verizon);
2) When the new smartphone arrives, do not turn it on, rather log onto Verizon online and click activate or switch a device; and
3) Select the UDP Line and that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI of the new smartphone and the SIM card number of the SIM card that shipped with the new smartphone and follow the directions to activate the new smartphone on the UDP line.

Enjoy the new S6!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have the iPhone 5 and want to upgrade to the 6. BB still won't let me do it without calling so I probably have to wait a while before I try it again. I just asked my friend who's a manager at a vzw about doing it through vzwonline again so we'll see what he says about it.

Like I said, I did it with my 4 to my 5 two years ago, but they said at that time I got lucky and it wouldn't likely happen again. So, I might just have to bite the bullet and pay retail for it to keep my UDP.

OK, activated on my line (had to text me an activation code to another phone in my family plan (said there was a current change happening to mine, so it wouldn't text me to that phone - had to text my sister to get her to give it to me. once i did that, it didn't give me the option to enter the new sim # - it just says to transfer sim cards. Does this sound right to you? apple pay isn't a big deal for me (yet anyway) so should i just put my sim in the phone?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

when do i turn off my galaxy s4 in this process? any info - greatly appreciated!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks! But isn't it safer to just order a new Nano SIM card from Verizon? I just did that an hour ago. Called VZW and told the rep that I just bought a new phone from my friend. Since the new phone uses Nano SIM card, I need a new card. The agent processed the request and said I should get it in 3 days. No charge. :) I also ordered Nano-to-Micro adapter from Amazon.

There is no one method that is safer than the others. Your plan and mine both reach the same end goal of upgrading the phone with subsidized pricing. What you are planning to do will work fine. My plan works for those not interested in buying an adapter.

At the end of the day, I hope you enjoy the S6 when it comes out!

Turn off your Galaxy S4 and move the nano SIM into the 6+. It sounds like Verizon is forcing you to use your current active nano-SIM, so go ahead and do it. Your current SIM is coded unlimited and will keep it when you put it in the 6+.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just wanted to update: I bit the bullet and took the risk of trying the Vzwonline upgrade route like I did two years ago. My tracking info says it got sent with a new sim. Crossing my fingers that it works again! If not, I'm just gunna do the 14 day return and pay full retail to keep my UDP. I'll let ya'll know when it gets here!

Okay, so I inserted my sim and turned the thing on. went through set up made a call received a call, turned on wifi and turned off wifi and used data...logged in to my VZW and my UDP line still shows as UDP and no data package is on my basic line...I'm going to keep checking it...i don't even see where there is a pending activation on the basic line, so if someone could show me where that might be, that would be great. I appreciate all the help here! Thank you!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It only worked once for me two years ago, and I've since been told by countless reps that it definitely would not happen again. But I am risking it to see for myself. 😕

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

If I get a new SIM card to replace my current SIM card(line with UDP) for any reason(damage, loss, etc), is there any chance that my UDP may be affected?

You should be fine. Generally, I suggest waiting at least a month before requesting a new SIM just for all pending activations to fall off the account.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

dusoccer10

I got the g3 for line 3 TDP from BB.
activated it on line 3
waited 24 hours
transferred upgrade from line 1 UDP to line 3 TDP on VZ website
switched G3 to line 1
went to BB website to order next G3 on line 3. It is telling me
"Even though this line isn't eligible for an upgrade yet, you can use a different line's eligibility to upgrade today."
Should i transfer upgrade on BB website?
