[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You are more than welcome to use a tiered line's upgrade in store. Feel free to upgrade Line 1 to a Nexus 6. As for moving it to Line 4, that can be done as soon as you get home if you want. Basically, you are looking at:

1.) Go to Verizon and upgrade the tiered line to a Nexus 6. Keep your Note 3 and its SIM
2.) When you get home, power off the Nexus 6
3.) Log into Verizon and select "active or switch device"
4.) Select Line 1
5.) Select a phone that has been on the account before
6.) Select the Note 3 with its old SIM (i.e. use an existing SIM)
7.) Follow the directions to activate the Note 3

Once you activate the Note 3 on Line 1. Make sure to power it on and that it is working. Once it has been about an hour and the old Note 3 is working again, just repeat the process above with Line 4. Power off Line 4's Note 3 and just do the steps over again.

I can confirm that I did this today and was successful.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Family plan
Line 1: note 2 udp upgrade avaliable
line 2: s4 udp upgrade avaliable
line 3: basic phone, no data, upgrade avaliable

Just to verify..I want to upgrade line 1 to LG g3 from best buy. I can order with line 2, ship to home, take Sim from line 1 and activate phone? Or do I go on Verizon and activate line 2 with new Sim card, wait 1 hour.. then swap Sim card? Use new Sim that came with LG go and put it in s4?

Thanks for your input guys/gals. I just wanna be sure I don't lose my udp.

Do NOT activate the phone on Line 2 if you are using its upgrade. That would cause you to lose the unlimited data on Line 2. The only time someone should activate on the line that the upgraded was used if it is a tiered data plan!

To upgrade to a G3, it is very simple since the Note 2 has the same sized SIM. Just do the following:

1.) Choose an upgrade (it doesn't matter which line) and order the phone from Best Buy. If you want to buy from Verizon, then you must use the upgrade on either Line 2 or 3. Either way, have the phone shipped to home.
2.) When the G3 arrives, remove the SIM and Battery before proceeding. Due not turn the phone on or try to charge it!
3.) Power off the Note 2
4.) Remove the SIM from the Note 2 and put it in the G3. This works since both phones use a Micro-SIM.
5.) Power on the G3 and wait a few minutes for it to activate

You'll have a pending activation on your account for a few weeks (up to a month or so). Just make sure that you do not need to change your plan for the next two months and it will eventually fall off the account.

Finally, enjoy your G3!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

How do exchanges work with the Best Buy method using a transfer upgrade? Lets say I take my phone back within the 14 day exchange window at Best Buy. Do I just get a new phone and insert the SIM into that phone from the old phone?

It depends on the method, line the upgrade was on, and overall plan to determine whether an exchange is safe. Basically, it comes down to this: if you upgraded on a tiered data plan, than an exchange should be safe. If you used an upgrade with a basic or unlimited line, then exchanges are not safe. In this case, you would be better returning the phone and getting your upgrade restored.

The reason exchanges can be difficult is that more stores (including Best Buy) will treat an exchange as a return/repurchase.

I'm planning to use a transfer upgrade to a basic (L2) line from a UDP (L1) then activating a new nano SIM on L1 with new phone.

I'm planning to use a transfer upgrade to a basic (L2) line from a UDP (L1) then activating a new nano SIM on L1 with new phone.

With this method, you cannot do an exchange. You'll need to do a return, get your upgrade restored, and then do it again.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Apologies if this has been covered. Don't post much because I'm patient enough to read until I find the answers I need or comfortable enough to try something. I've read, for the last month or so, until I confuse myself, wait, come back and read again. Finally decided I was ready to attempt an upgrade. Attempted the Best Buy method a couple of days ago and ran into something that I can't remember reading about. Plus, thought about more questions I should maybe ask too. LOL

I have the old Nationwide family share plan 1400 minutes, unlimited text/pic with 4 lines on month to month.
Line 1: Galaxy S3 UDP- Upgrade (mine)
Line 2: Basic- Upgrade (hubby's)
Line 3: Galaxy S4- UDP Upgrade (son's)
Line 4: USB727 UDP- Upgrade (Mobile broadband line only, has been and currently suspended the last several years)

I have been holding on to the broadband account since moving because I figured I would need it again and it's UD. Needed it again for home/travel, so bought an used jetpack outright only to discover that I couldn't activate it to the 3g UD broadband account (per Verizon VAR, CSR and online). I'm in a 4g/LTE area. While researching to see if that was correct, I also discovered that I had been buying my phones outright to get new ones when it hadn't been necessary. Well, bite me, been paying for both all this time for nothing! In the meantime, hubby decides he wants to come out of the dark ages and get a smartphone (don't know if he'll ever learn to use it, he doesn't even have the patience to learn to use computer or tablet :D). I also need to add my elderly parents onto my plan. We are close to retirement and need to cut back on costs but I also want to help my parents. They don't have reliable internet service at home for his PC or her ipad. She's got AT&T and since discovering facebook she goes over her data limit in less than 2 weeks ;).

So, here's my questions.
1) Can I add more lines to the share plan without losing it or my UD?
2) Should I add the extra line(s) before attempting to use the upgrades to keep from showing a PA order on my account? Assuming that adding a line will activate an order.
3) When I attempted the Best Buy method before to use L2's (basic) upgrade for L1, I got all the way through to the confirm purchase button (did a screenshot each page) but didn't get the option to keep unlimited data. I stopped right there and went to research. Found some screenshots of what each step should look like and I did notice that my plan info didn't show up after connecting to check upgrade status. Went back to look at my order again and had timed out with a message to the effect of "the item was not available at this time". That was okay since I was going to cancel until I could find out what I should do anyway. Haven't tried again yet.
4) Should I use the upgrade available on L4 for L1? That would extend the contract on the L4 broadband account right?
5) Or, use L2's upgrade for L1 then transfer the upgrade available for L4 over to L2? Then L4 wouldn't be under contract?
6) I'm not seeing the option to transfer upgrades on the VZW site anymore. It can still be done right?

Sorry so long and so many questions, but I just want to be sure of the best approach to all of this before starting again. I've got some ideas on it already but just want to confirm I'm right. And I want to take advantage of all of my upgrades that I've been holding on to while I can.

You have a lot of great questions. I can definitely help you with the upgrades; though, I have zero clue about the mobile broadband line. Regarding the upgrades, the very first thing you need to do is...get your other lines added to the account! At the very least upgrade your husband to a smartphone. You can do this safely and it will not affect your unlimited line. He will go on his own tiered data plan. The good news is that this makes it very easy to then upgrade the unlimited lines. Feel free to order him a smartphone from anyone.

Once he has been upgraded, now you can focus on your own smartphone needs. At this point, all you need to do is the following:

1) Log onto Verizon or Best Buy and transfer your UDP line's upgrade your husband's TDP line;
2) Order the new smartphone you want on the TDP line selecting the TDP line's same data plan if required to select a data plan;
3) When the new smartphone arrives, activate it on the TDP line according to the directions that came with the phone using the SIM card that ships with the phone;
4) Wait at least an hour and make a few calls/text from the new smartphone to make sure it activated OK;
5) If the new smartphone and the TDP line's old phone have the same size SIM card, swap SIMs to put the TDP line's old phone back on the TDP line; if not, log onto Verizon to put the TDP line's old smartphone back on the TDP line; and
6) Depending on SIM card size, log onto Verizon and put the new smartphone on the UDP line or swap SIMs with the UDP line's old phone to put the new smartphone on the UDP line.

When you want to upgrade your son, feel free to follow the 6 steps listed above. Basically, once you create a tiered data plan on your account, all upgrades should go through it.

As for your parents, you can add them to your account as well and it will not affect your unlimited lines. Verizon has a limit on how many lines can be in an account, but they allow sub-accounts within a larger one. So, basically, there is nothing stopping you from adding them.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Hopefully, someone will chime in with your mobile broadband issue.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello! I'm new here, and not familiar with smart phones older than my iphone4. I would very much like to thank everyone who reads these inquiries and thoughtfully responds to them. I appreciate it. I've done some reading on this forum and would like some advice on my particular situation.

Here is what our plan looks like:

Line 1: UDP Iphone 4 ( upgrade available)
Line 2: TDP Iphone5 (no upgrade now, avail. end of June)
Line 3: TDP Iphone5 ( no upgrade)
Line 4: dumb phone, no data (no upgrade now, avail end of sept.)
Line 5: dumb phone, no data (no upgrade)

Relevant Info:

I am the account holder and Line 1 of this family share plan, although we all live in different places. Ideally, I'd like to use my upgrade, but DO NOT want to lose my UDP. Since my phone (Iphone4) does not have a SIM card, I'm not sure what to do. I think that eventually lines 4 & 5 will want to upgrade to a smart phone, and line 5 might need the line 2 upgrade to do so.

I do have access to a 4G Motorola Droid (XT907) that has a sim card slot and I've read about taking that to a store to get a SIM card attached to my UDP line, but it seems risky, and if I can avoid stores and reps, that would be great.

Questions:

Also, just out of curiosity, if I were to purchase a new phone full price ( not my first choice), how would I be able to safely (i.e. keep UDP) activate it without a 4G sim card already tied to my UDP account?

If I use or transfer the upgrade on line 1, will this trigger a new contract and force me to lose UDP? I've read that transferring a UDP upgrade to another line renews the contract of that UDP line for two years and that the renewal will cause UDP to disappear. Does anyone have recent experiences with this? Also, how does transferring an upgrade from one line to another affect the upgrade date of the line it was transferred to?

Objective:

What I want to do is upgrade line 1 from iPhone 4 to new smart phone ( either iPhone 6 or Galaxy--not sure which phone yet ( would this info be relevant to any advice you would give?) and keep UDP. What is the best way to do this?

Thanks so much in advance!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm not sure if it matters, but the phones on Lines 2 & 3 that I just mentioned are Iphone 5s not Iphone5.

Thanks!

The good news is that you have lots of different ways to upgrading. All that matters is what you want to do.

Option 1
Buy a phone at full price (or a used one from Swappa/Ebay/Craigslist/etc...). This will keep your unlimited data no matter what. All you need to do is call Verizon and they can activate the phone for you. If you get a phone without a SIM (i.e. bought used), it is safe to take the phone to a store for activation

Option 2
Assuming your address is both on the account and billing, you can do the upgrade transfer method since the new phone will be shipped to your home. Feel free to transfer your upgrade to Line 2 or 3. You'll just have time the step so that the activation doesn't interfere with the other person.

Option 3
Activate the 4G Droid on your account so you get an active SIM card. You can do this at Verizon easily without affecting your unlimited data. Once this is done, you can use your upgrade through Best Buy. When the new phone arrives at home, you can will use the SIM in the Droid most likely cutting it.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi DUSoccer10,

Thanks for your response! I have just a couple of questions about what you wrote.

1) If I transfer my upgrade to Line 2 or 3, how does it affect their current upgrade date? And, does this extend my contract, or theirs?
2) In option 3 you say,

"Activate the 4G Droid on your account so you get an active SIM card. You can do this at Verizon easily without affecting your unlimited data. Once this is done, you can use your upgrade through Best Buy. When the new phone arrives at home, you can will use the SIM in the Droid most likely cutting it. "

To activate the Droid, do I have to go to the Verizon store? Also, when you say use my upgrade through BB, do you mean transfer that to another line through BB or just upgrade my own line? I thought that upgrading anything on my own line, and then using that upgraded phone would trigger a plan change.

3) I just saw an HTC One M8 on sale at best buy. I am just starting the process of looking at new phones, but this received good reviews and is priced comparably to a subsidized phone. If I purchase something like this and have it shipped to my house, is this option 1? Is it best to activate it online, on phone, or in store and would you anticipate any complications since I don't already have a SIM?

Finally, is there a "best" option of the ones that you mention?

Thank you very much.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

When using the upgrade transfer method, what are a list of websites that I can order a phone from (and have it shipped to my house, so i can do the process myself)?

verizon and best buy, i know
costco?? (super cheap phones)
has anyone tried any other sites?

Thanks so much Dusoccer10! You confirmed just about everything that I was already thinking. I wasn't sure if I should keep the basic line just in case hubby decides he doesn't need a smart phone though. If that happens, can the data be dropped, reactivate the dumb phone to his TDP and use the smart phone on another line? I know he's going to want to keep his number and I do have access to a Droid Razr that he was going to try out first so the upgrade wouldn't have to be used yet thus no new contract.

If you want to order online, the only two that can do them are Verizon and Best Buy. If you go in-store, Costco, Staples, and a few others can also process them. However, at that point you are dealing with reps and could possibly run into trouble.

I would definitely recommend him testing using a smartphone with the Droid Razr you have access to. The minute you use the basic upgrade to get him a new smartphone, plan on paying for two years of data. Even if you put the basic phone back on the line, you'll be on the hook for the data charges. Now, you can always move the new smartphone to another line (that's the gist of the method I provided), but the data charges will still be on his line even without a smartphone. This is part of the changes that Verizon instituted last August.

As long as he has an upgrade available and is "month-to-month", he can go back and forth between a smart and basic phone.

Ok, cool. I may be fooled but I'd just about bet that he's not gonna have the patience to learn to use a smart phone ;). Thanks again and I'll holler if I think of any more questions!

Thank you very much.

1.) The contract that gets extended is where the upgrade originated from. So, when you move the upgrade from the unlimited line to a tiered line, the unlimited line gets its contract extended. The tiered data lines will still get their upgrades as normal when they become available.

2.) Activate the Droid would involve either going to a corporate or authorized retailer of Verizon.

3.) Ordering a new smartphone through Best Buy does not cause you to lose your unlimited data. It's only when activating the phone will the plan change. However, you can bypass this by using your old SIM (which is programmed to unlimited data) rather than the one that comes with the phone.

4.) If you buy the HTC M8 from Best Buy, this would be considered a full price purchase. It would be safe to activate this phone because you will keep your unlimited, and is considered option 1 in the list that I provided. It's safe to activate this phone anyway that you want (instore, online, or by phone).

As for Best option, the only sure way of guaranteeing unlimited is to buy a phone outright. Option 1 does this. However, if you want a 2015 model phone, options 2 and 3 provide loopholes that allow you to get 2-year contract pricing rather than paying full purchase.

At the end of the day, it's all a matter of comfort.

If he decides not to have a smartphone, you can always bring your parents into your account and use their tiered lines for upgrades. ;-)

I think Verizon only allows 5 lines per account, so you could move the mobile broadband to a subaccount and then have the 5 phone lines on the other one.
