[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Interesting! So if I switch the sim card, will the GS6 now show up on the VZW site for my devices?

I'm concerned because they're clearly aware I ordered the GS6, and being that it's already listed as one of my "previous devices", I'm worried the connection will be made and UDP will be lost.

Then again, if I never actually am asked to pick a new TDP, they can't just pull me off UDP.

The SIM in your Droid Maxx is currently programmed to unlimited data. It stays this way until you either reprogram it for another line or activate a new SIM on the unlimited line. That's why you can just plug it straight into the S6.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

There are many factors that could be at play. What phone do you currently have and what phone did you order? Did you upgrade the unlimited line, transfer the upgrade to a different line, or use a different line's upgrade? We need more information in order to guide you.

Well I have a UDP GS4 now and transferred upgrade to basic line and ordered the GS6.

I'll assume I will be removing the SIM from the GS6 and destroying it and activating with new SIM on L1.

Thanks

You do not need a new nano-SIM to get the S6 on the unlimited line. Just do the following:

1) Through Best Buy online, order the S6 and have it shipped to home not shipped to store after transferring the upgrade to the basic line
2) When the new smartphone arrives, do not turn it on, rather log onto Verizon online and click activate or switch a device; and
3) Select the UDP Line and that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI of the new smartphone and the SIM card number of the SIM card that shipped with the new smartphone and follow the directions to activate the new smartphone on the UDP line.

In step 3, you end up reprogramming the nano-SIM that ships with the S6. If you get a brand new nano-SIM before ordering the S6, you still do step 3 just with the other nano-SIM rather than the one that ships with the phone. The choice is yours.

I'll assume this is confirmed safe with multiple people who have done this. Also, would the basic line show as pending on my account ?

I think I understand now. I don't need to go through the VZW website because I'm not changing my SIM. The only people who have to "activate/switch device" are the people who don't already have a Nano-SIM card, correct? Such as equake here.

There is risk in any loophole you use. It's all a matter of how much you want to risk it. The only confirmed, 100% safe way of keeping unlimited is to purchase full price or used from Swappa, Ebay, or Craigslist. With that said, the method above works. There have been a few people here and many more on the Slickdeals thread that have successfully done this method.

And yes, you will have a pending activation on the basic line for a month or two.

Basically, yes. All methods can be broken down into a couple of categories:

1.) Use old SIM -- either you swap because the SIMs are the same size, cut your existing one to fit, or get an adapter because you need a larger one (you do not activate or switch device in this scenario)
2.) Use the SIM that comes with phone - this is for upgrades that were used on a different line than the attended one and the SIMs are different sizes (use online activate or switch device)
3.) Order the correct sized SIM before upgrading - this is a variation of the first 2 and only necessary in specific methods (use activate or switch device)

By the way, you're awesome. Thank you so much! I'll post my results tonight.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Is option 2 possible to do by myself without VAR if i already have the right size sim? what is VAR. Verizon store?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You need to use your mom's upgrade because of the type of phone you have. The iPhone 4 will not work with the Best Buy method since it does not have a removable SIM card. This means you have two options:

1.) Use the method I outlined. By doing this you end up reprogramming the SIM that comes with the phone to your unlimited data plan. You can order the new iPhone from either Best Buy or Verizon.

2.) If you want to use your upgrade, the only way possible is (1) order the iPhone from Best Buy, (2) remove the SIM card that comes with the phone when it arrives, and (3) take the phone to VAR for activation. This way works though it is easier to cause some problems if you run into a tricky VAR rep. However, there are plenty of people who have had success going this route.

sorry i meant to use quotes anyway.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

One other question--does anyone know if you can still get the $50 rebate for the GS6 by doing this method? Or does that only work if you actually activate the data plan?

Which line are you trying to use? Your screenshot seems to indicate that you are trying to upgrade a phone on contract. Is this right?

I've seen some people get it and others not get it. There doesn't seem to be any reason to explain this.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

but its not we've been out of contract because of grandfathered plan forever

Do you have any lines that are in contract? The picture you posted clearly states that your two year upgrade will become available 02/17/2016. This message only shows for phone lines that are in-contract.

Worst case scenario is that you can order from Verizon if you want as the method works there as well.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Here's my scenario. I'm on a Nationwide Talk & Text Share 2000 plan.

Line 1: UDP Moto X (upgrade available)
Line 2: UDP iPhone 4S without SIM (upgrade available)
Line 3: TDP iphone 5C (no upgrade)
Line 4: Basic phone, no data (upgrade available 5/23/2015)

I'd like to transfer an upgrade to line 3 and order the Droid Turbo. Does it matter if I use an upgrade from line 4 (basic phone) or from line 2 (UDP)?

Ultimately I want the Droid Turbo on line 2 and don't want to lose line 2's UDP.

It sounds like when the Droid Turbo arrives I can put it on line 2 using Verizon's web site. But I'm not sure how to put the Droid Turbo on line 2, because I don't have a SIM in the iPhone 4S that can be put in the Turbo. From what I'm reading in current posts it seems like I should:

1) When the new Droid Turbo arrives, don't turn it on or plug it in
2) Log into Verizon's website
3) Select "activate or switch device"
4) Select Line 2
5) Select "phone that has never been on the account before"
6) Select "use pre-existing SIM"
7) Type in the IMEI and SIM numbers that came with the new Droid Turbo.
8) Follow the rest of the directions to activate the phone

Will that work? And, at what point do I finally turn on the Droid Turbo? After I do step 8?
