[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So, I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I'm line 1 with unlimited data. I dropped my LG G2 last week and broke the screen. I got that fixed and everything is working fine but the GPS no longer works. I use the GPS all the time so I'm looking to replace it as quickly as possible. With that said, I'd like to replace my phone and keep my UDP. I am the account holder and line 1. Could I replace the dumb phone with a new smartphone and move it to my line and keep my UDP? Also, would I have to add the data plan to my dumb phone line or would I be able to drop it after the purchase. A little confused. Or..do I have to bite the bullet and pay full retail for a new phone to keep my UDP. My plan details are below:

Line 1: UDP LG G2 ( No Upgrade - Upgrade available 9/29/15)
Line 2: UDP LG G2 ( No Upgrade - Upgrade available 9/29/15)
Line 3: TDP LG G3 ( No Upgrade)
Line 4: TDP LG G3 ( No Upgrade)
Line 5: Dumb phone, no data (Upgrade Available)

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also, any recommendations for where to purchase a full price phone should I need to do that?

Thanks for your help :)

I'm pretty sure Dusoccer10's response to me above answers your question-
1) Log onto Verizon or Best Buy and transfer your UDP line's upgrade your husband's TDP line;
2) Order the new smartphone you want on the TDP line selecting the TDP line's same data plan if required to select a data plan;
3) When the new smartphone arrives, activate it on the TDP line according to the directions that came with the phone using the SIM card that ships with the phone;
4) Wait at least an hour and make a few calls/text from the new smartphone to make sure it activated OK;
5) If the new smartphone and the TDP line's old phone have the same size SIM card, swap SIMs to put the TDP line's old phone back on the TDP line; if not, log onto Verizon to put the TDP line's old smartphone back on the TDP line; and
6) Depending on SIM card size, log onto Verizon and put the new smartphone on the UDP line or swap SIMs with the UDP line's old phone to put the new smartphone on the UDP line.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. My understanding of it is there are 2 ways for you to do it and not lose your UDP. The above by transferring the basic line's upgrade to one of the TDP lines. Or, upgrade the basic line through Best Buy, ship to home, do not activate turn on charge or insert sim in the phone when it arrives, throw away the sim card that comes with the phone and insert the sim from your G2 if it's the same size. You should be good to go.

Just use the upgrade on the basic line to get a new phone for Line 1. All you need to do is the following:

1.) Order the phone you want using the basic line's upgrade from either Best Buy or Verizon. Have the phone shipped to home.
2.) When the new phone arrives do not turn it on or plug it in.

At this point, the steps will vary depending on the new phone you order. This is because of the SIMs in each phone

Same Size SIM
3.) Take the SIM out of the G2 and put it in the new phone
4.) Turn on the new phone and give it a couple of minutes to activate

Different Size SIMs (you can either cut your existing SIM to the right size or do the following)
3.) Log into Verizon's website
4.) Select "activate or switch device"
5.) Select Line 1
6.) Select "phone that has never been on the account before"
7.) Select "use pre-existing SIM"
8.) Type in the IMEI and SIM numbers that came with the new phone. Usually, there is a sticker on the box that contains them.
9.) Follow the rest of the directions to activate the phone

Of course, you can always purchase a phone at full price if you want. Verizon's Iconic Portal (https://preorder.verizonwireless.com/iconic/) is usually your best bet.

If you do the method above, it will not result in a $30 monthly charge to basic line. This happens because you never actually activate the phone on the line.

Unfortunately, Verizon does not allow the transfers of basic upgrades to a smartphone line. This was closed last November.

One other quick question. Does this also mean there is no new contract for two years on the basic dumb phone line or will there now be a two year contract on that line? (Since I activate with Line 1 Sim Card

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have an upgrade available on my line #1 UDP galaxy s5
no upgrade on my line #2 TDP galaxy s5
Can I switch the upgrade from line 1 to line 2 to get the galaxy s6 and when the phone comes in just activate and keep it on line 2?

also If i want to just switch back to the s5 and keep the s6 as a backup can I do that? or because the sims are different will I run into problems reactivating the s5 on line 2?

Thank you

You lose the upgrade and put the basic phone back in a 2 year contract. However, you do not end up with a data plan on the line.

You can definitely do this. When using an upgrade on a tiered line, once you activate the new smartphone, you can do whatever you want. If you want to put the old S5 on the line, that's fine. Just keep your old SIMs or take the old S5 to Verizon for activation.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey dusoccer10, when I try to follow your instructions and select Line 1 under Activate/Switch Device, it takes me to a screen that tries to "verify your new device", being the GS6 I just ordered on Line 2.

If I tell it I don't want to activate the phone I ordered, and to just take me to the "Activate/Switch Device" page, then I can enter in the IMEI number. But it says "The device you're activating is not compatible with your current plan. Please select a Data Plan below." Did they figure out this loophole and close it?

Or can I just put my old sim card into the new phone, and turn it on? They are the same size (my old phone was a Droid Maxx). I'm confused about when you can just swap the sim cards, and when you actually have to go through the "Activate/Switch Device" page.

Edit: I should also mention that the GS6 somehow now appears under "devices I've used previously", even though I never turned it on. It appears to be there because I still have my open order on the account. And I bought the phone through Verizon, not Best Buy.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey guys,

Would like some clarification on the 4ever method.

Here's my situation:
L1: TDP, Galaxy S5, no upgrade
L2: UDP, RAZR MAXX HD, upgrade available

I'm going to transfer the L2 upgrade to L1 and order a Galaxy S6. The S6 uses a nano SIM card, whereas the S5 and RAZR use micro SIM cards.
According to the instructions, I should be activating the S6 with the SIM that comes with it, which will activate the phone on L1. Once I do that, I need to switch the phone to L2. Can I use the nano SIM card that comes with the phone for this? If I swap lines via Verizon's online portal, will the nano SIM get reprogrammed to be on L2 instead of L1? Or do I need to go to a Verizon store and get myself a new nano SIM for L2? I would prefer not to cut my existing micro SIM.

Also, what happens if I never activate the phone on L1? What if I get a SIM for L2 and activate on L2? Will this cause me to lose UDP?

Thanks!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Has anyone successfully activated a new VZW Nano SIM on a UDP 4G line using the BestBuy method using Verizon online?

I had the same situation as you. All I did was switch the sim card and it worked fine although in my case I had to cut down a sim card. For you it's much easier, simply insert and you're good to go.

With a Droid Maxx, just put the SIM from it in the S6. You don't need to use the online system.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Has anyone successfully activated a new VZW Nano SIM on a UDP 4G line using the BestBuy method using Verizon online?

There are many factors that could be at play. What phone do you currently have and what phone did you order? Did you upgrade the unlimited line, transfer the upgrade to a different line, or use a different line's upgrade? We need more information in order to guide you.

Ignore your last thought and stick with the first part as that was right on the money. All you need to do is the following:

1.) Through Best Buy or Verizon online, move your upgrade from Line 2 to Line 1
2.) Order the S6 have it shipped to home
3.) When the S6 arrives, activate it on the tiered line following the directions that come with phone
4.) Wait at least an hour and test the phone. Make sure calls, text, and data all work.
5.) Power off the S6 and Droid Maxx
6.) Log onto Verizon online and reactivate the S5 on Line 1 using its old SIM
7.) Take the SIM out of the Droid Maxx and put it on the S6 since both are nano-sized

Enjoy the S6 with unlimited data!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

dusoccer10, my phone on the UDP line is a Droid RAZR MAXX, not the Droid MAXX. The former has a Micro SIM card. The Droid MAXX you mentioned is a newer phone that uses a nano. So my current phone on the UDP has a micro SIM card, hence my confusion. What's the best way to go about getting the new S6 to work on my UDP line? Thanks

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Interesting! So if I switch the sim card, will the GS6 now show up on the VZW site for my devices?

I'm concerned because they're clearly aware I ordered the GS6, and being that it's already listed as one of my "previous devices", I'm worried the connection will be made and UDP will be lost.

Then again, if I never actually am asked to pick a new TDP, they can't just pull me off UDP.

Got it. Then do the following:

5.) Power off the S6 and Droid Maxx
6.) Log onto Verizon online and reactivate the S5 on Line 1 using its old SIM
7.) Activate the S6 on Line 2 using the SIM that shipped with the phone

You end up reprogramming the SIM to the unlimited data in step 7.
